This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trends of Thought and Christian Truth Several years ago a number of lectures were delivered by me, upon request, on the relation of Christianity to modern issues. These lectures formed the starting point for this volume. Some of them were repeated before the students of Wittenberg College and the Hamma Divinity School. They are now elaborated and put into a form which shall correlate them as a text-book with the logical and philosophical studies, which are usually found in cer tain groups and courses in the Senior year of the college course. There is in them also much material which may serve for apologetic courses in theological seminaries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Inspiration Considered as a Trend Classic Reprint written by D. W. Faunce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inspiration Considered as a Trend The trend toward God in all forms of human thought is just as distinct. This volume aims to carry out and newly apply the thought of trend as there expressed. The form of argument used there for the Divine exist ence is used here for the Divine inspiration. It is insisted that trend, the strongest proof in the one case, is the strongest proof in the other. What if the method God intended us to use in proving his own being and his own revelation is one? So too, it may be that the trend in the various theories of inspiration proposed by devout students of the Bible and that shown by the Bible itself, deserve notice. No new theory is here pro posed; but the theories devoutly held and the facts declared and involved in the Scriptures and con firmed in the Christian experience, are passed in brief review - to find in them all an unmistakable trend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two closely related questions receive distinctively theological answers in this study: What is truth? and How can we tell whether what we have said is true? Bruce Marshall proposes that the Christian community's identification of God as the Trinity serves as the key to a theologically adequate treatment of these questions. Professor Marshall argues on trinitarian grounds that the Christian way of identifying God ought to have unrestricted primacy when it comes to the justification of belief, and he proposes a trinitarian way of reshaping the concept of truth. Direct engagement with the current philosophical debate about truth, meaning and belief (in Quine and others) suggests that a trinitarian account of epistemic justification and truth is also more philosophically compelling than the approaches generally favoured in modern theology, as exemplified by Schleiermacher, Ritschl, Rahner and others. Marshall offers a contemporary way of conceiving of the Christian God as 'the truth'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True Evangelism What is here written is the result of evangelistic experience and study covering a period of almost a score of years. During this time the trend of the writer's conviction has been away from emotional and superficial methods, which are too often thought to be the only possible expression of earnestness and enthusiasm in soul-winning, and toward an entire dependence upon the Spirit to do every phase of the work that has been assigned to Him in the purpose of God. In this sphere of his consciousness and personal activities, he has freedom of choice and volition. Because of this personal free dom and responsibility, it is left to him, as soon as he shall become conscious of the nature of his inward life and its divine possibilities, to adjust the external man and its conditions to a full co-ordination with the inward life in its unfolding effort to give complete organic expression of itself in external manifestation. Hence the time involved in the unfolding of his being and the bringing forth of his latent spiritual power to complete external expression, depends entirely upon the man himself. First, upon his recognition of this inward spiritual life and its possibilities, and then his intelligent co - operation therewith. This cc-operation consists in the perfect adjustment of the outward man to the requirements of the inward life. Download or read book Classic Christianity written by Thomas C. Oden and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, Thomas Oden's Systematic Theology classic series (individually titled The Living God, The Word of Life, and Life in the Spirit) is available in one complete volume. A renowned theologian, Oden provides a consensus view of the Christian faith, delving deeply into ancient Christian tradition and bringing to the contemporary church the best wisdom from its past. In this magisterial work, Oden tackles the central questions of Christian belief and the nature of the trinity. Written for clergy, Christian educators, religious scholars, and lay readers alike, Classic Christianity provides the best synthesis of the whole history of Christian thought. Part one explores the most intriguing questions of the study of God—Does God exist? Does Jesus reveal God? Is God personal, compassionate, free?—and presents answers that reflect the broad consensus culled from the breadth of the church's teachers. It is rooted deeply and deliberately in scripture but confronts the contemporary mind with the vitality of the Christian tradition. Part two addresses the perplexing Christological issues of whether God became flesh, whether God became Christ, and whether Christ is the source of salvation. Oden details the core beliefs concerning Jesus Christ that have been handed down for the last two hundred decades, namely, who he was, what he did, and what that means for us today. Part three examines how the work of God in creation and redemption is being brought to consummation by the Holy Spirit in persons, through communities, and in the fullness of human destiny. Oden's magisterial study not only treats the traditional elements of systematical theology but also highlights the foundational exegetes throughout history. Covering the ecumenical councils and early synods; the great teachers of the Eastern church tradition, including Athanasius and John Chrysostom; and the prominent Western figures such as Augustine, Ambrose, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, and John Calvin, this book offers the reader the fullest understanding of the Christian faith available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grace and Truth: Under Twelve Different Aspects Neither does man know truth. He does not know the [rut/z about God. He could quite believe that God made the world, and that he is good to a certain extent; but that God looks upon one sin as making a man guilty as really as ten thousand, he cannot understand. Though written as clear as writing can make it In the Book of God, he cannot perceive it. Christ brought out the truth about God, that He could by'no means clear the guilty, but that he could impute guilt and impute righteousness. An infidel said, Is it justice for an innocent man to die for a guilty is it consistent with reason, either in justice to the innocent or the guilty?' Well, suppose it is not, and we may grant it. But what if God became man, and put away sin by the sac rifice of Himself where is your reasoning now? Our gospel is not an innocent man dying for the guilty merely, but the God-man made sin, and putting it away.' Nor does man know the truth about himself, that he is lost. He thinks that he may be lost, not that he is lost. He hopes, in some vague way, that it will yet be all right with him. Christ brought out the truth about man, that man was hope lessly gone in sin, that he would kill God ifhe gould. Book excerpt: Forgotten Truths is a Christian classic by Sir Robert Anderson, where he discusses a number of Bible lessons he believed forgotten or misrepresented in the modern day. Lamenting what he viewed as a lapse in Christian consciousness towards some of the Bible's most important principles, the author embarks on an investigation which takes him across the Biblical New Testament. Much of the work concentrates upon the person of Jesus Christ, and the words and lessons dispensed by Christ during his lifetime. Other topics include the nature of God's plan for humanity, and the impending second coming of Jesus to the Earth. The perceived delay in Jesus' arrival is also addressed, with the Gospels consistently cited in support of Anderson's arguments. In all, the author sets out a vision of Christianity as he feels it should be, supported by the words of the Holy Bible. Sir Robert Anderson was one of England's most senior police commissioners who worked in London's Scotland Yard. The meticulousness of his profession is evident in his writing; readers can expect thoughtful and close readings of the Bible, as well as sophisticated and sometimes profound conclusions upon their truest meaning. This edition includes all five appendices, which explain the meaning behind specific phenomena in the Bible, together with passages Anderson found particularly important to the subject. Today, Sir Robert Anderson's numerous writings are underappreciated classics of Christian thought, sure to encourage contemplation in all who read them.

Download or read book Movements and Men of Christian History Classic Reprint written by Charles T. Billings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Movements and Men of Christian History These lessons are designed to give the boy and girl, of about fifteen, some idea of the important movements within the Chris tian Church, and the men in whom they found expression. Ow ing to limitations of space the one problem has been what to leave out. I cannot expect all will agree in what should be omit ted or put in, but sincerely hope that anyone who studies these lessons carefully will understand the trend of Church history, and the deeper meaning of much that truth and tradition have made sacred. The questions at the end of the lessons are not merely to test the pupil's knowledge of the text, but to stimulate thought and provoke discussion. A careful teacher can guide the class toward the precept printed at the end of the questions, which should be the last impression left on the minds of the pupils. Please keep in view that though these lessons have a historical atmosphere, they also have a spiritual aim.
