Book Trends in Hodgkin s Disease Research

Download or read book Trends in Hodgkin s Disease Research written by Beverley C. Heinz and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hodgkin's disease, sometimes called Hodgkin's lymphoma, is a cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue includes the lymph nodes and related organs that are part of the body's immune and blood-forming systems. The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs found underneath the skin in the neck, underarm, and groin. They are also found in many other places in the body such as inside the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes. They are connected throughout the body by lymph vessels (narrow tubes similar to blood vessels). These lymph vessels carry a colourless, watery fluid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes. Eventually the lymphatic fluid is emptied into the blood vessels in the left upper chest. There are 5 different types of Hodgkin's lymphoma: Nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma; Mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma; Lymphocyte depletion Hodgkin's lymphoma; Lymphocyte-rich classical Hodgkin's lymphoma; Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma. This volume examines and presents leading-edge research in this field.

Book New Developments in Lymphoma and Hodgkin s Disease Research

Download or read book New Developments in Lymphoma and Hodgkin s Disease Research written by Seth D. Tulviste and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lymphatic system plays a key role in fighting out the bacteria infested in the human body. More importantly, it aids in the fight against disease. Inside the lymphatic system, lymph vessels widen to produce lymph nodes. These lymph nodes usually appear under the arm or neck of those who are sick or infected. If cells continue to swell or multiply, they can often be considered as cancerous. Lymphoma is the actual type of cancerous cell that spreads throughout the lymphatic system. One main group of cells that spread within lymphatic system is Hodgkin's Disease, which is recognised by its growth of Reed-Sternberg cells. This book presents cutting edge research from around the world.

Book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities

Download or read book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the National Cancer Institute initiated an investigation of cancer risks in populations near 52 commercial nuclear power plants and 10 Department of Energy nuclear facilities (including research and nuclear weapons production facilities and one reprocessing plant) in the United States. The results of the NCI investigation were used a primary resource for communicating with the public about the cancer risks near the nuclear facilities. However, this study is now over 20 years old. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that the National Academy of Sciences provide an updated assessment of cancer risks in populations near USNRC-licensed nuclear facilities that utilize or process uranium for the production of electricity. Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 focuses on identifying scientifically sound approaches for carrying out an assessment of cancer risks associated with living near a nuclear facility, judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical power, ability to assess potential confounding factors, possible biases, and required effort. The results from this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of cancer risk assessment, which will be carried out in Phase 2. This report is beneficial for the general public, communities near nuclear facilities, stakeholders, healthcare providers, policy makers, state and local officials, community leaders, and the media.

Book Diseases of the Lymphatic System

Download or read book Diseases of the Lymphatic System written by D. W. Molander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a practical approach for clinicians who work with patients afflicted with diseases of the lymphoid system and bone marrow. Associated biochemical, hematological, and chromosomal abnormalities, as well as infectious complications, are covered because of their importance in managing patients with lymphatic diseases. In addition, cell kinetics and the classification of lym phocytic lymphomas are included because familiarity with these subjects leads to a better understanding of the physiology of the disease. Radiological techniques that aid the clinician in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the lymphoid tissue are discussed. The explosive interest in patients with generalized acquired (auto) immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) prompted the inclusion of a chapter exclusively devoted to this topic. Finally, the chapter dealing with psychological aspects of patients with cancer allows the reader to become familiar with useful techniques. Distilled from a vast array of data and representing the most up-to-date material available, this volume is intended to be of interest to internists, oncolo gists, hematologists, radiotherapists, nurses, and anyone in an associated pa ramedical field who may be involved in the care of patients with diseases of the lymphatic system. Book Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

Download or read book Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation written by Angelo Carella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook integrates basic research and clinical aspects underlying the most recent results in those malignant diseases where progress is most effective. Recent evidence shows that higher doses are better in inducing higher cure rates in hematological neoplasias, although myeloblation related to dose intensity can be a limiting factor. The toxicity can now be controlled with autologous marrow and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation, used with or without growth factors. The combination of high dose chemoradiotherapy followed by re-infusion of autologous stem cells constitute a dramatic advance in the treatment of refactory and relapse hematological neoplasias.

Download or read book Animals and Medicine written by Jack Botting and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals and Medicine: The Contribution of Animal Experiments to the Control of Disease offers a detailed, scholarly historical review of the critical role animal experiments have played in advancing medical knowledge. Laboratory animals have been essential to this progress, and the knowledge gained has saved countless lives—both human and animal. Unfortunately, those opposed to using animals in research have often employed doctored evidence to suggest that the practice has impeded medical progress. This volume presents the articles Jack Botting wrote for the Research Defence Society News from 1991 to 1996, papers which provided scientists with the information needed to rebut such claims. Collected, they can now reach a wider readership interested in understanding the part of animal experiments in the history of medicine—from the discovery of key vaccines to the advancement of research on a range of diseases, among them hypertension, kidney failure and cancer. This book is essential reading for anyone curious about the role of animal experimentation in the history of science from the nineteenth century to the present.
