Book Trends in Highway Information

Download or read book Trends in Highway Information written by Ziad A. Sabra and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report evaluates the quantity, quality, and availability of traffic accident and other safety-related data and their effects on the ability of Federal, State, and local governments to successfully perform highway safety missions. Practices in the collection, processing, and use of accident, traffic, and roadway inventory data in a sample of States and local jurisdictions are reviewed in terms of their impact on highway safety planning, implementation, and evaluation. The study notes the increasing use of microcomputers, the increased amount and quality of traffic volume and roadway inventory data, and the integration of traffic, roadway, and accident databases. Other findings include reduced reporting of property-damage-only accidents, increased numbers of tort liability claims, insufficient local data in State files, level of police training and interagency coordination, deficient local traffic and roadway inventories, and errors in the use of highway location reference systems. The study contains recommendations for accommodating and/or reversing some of these practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congestion continues to grow in America¿s urban areas. This report presents details on the 2004 trends, findings and what can be done to address the growing transportation problems. Trend data from 1982 to 2002 for 85 urban areas provides both a local view and a national perspective on the growth and extent of traffic congestion. The 2004 Report provides clear evidence that the time for improvements has arrived. Communicating the congestion levels and the need for improvements is a goal of this report. The decisions about which, and how much, improvement to fund will be made at the local level according to a variety of goals, but there are some broad conclusions that can be drawn from this database. Book Assessing and Managing the Ecological Impacts of Paved Roads

Download or read book Assessing and Managing the Ecological Impacts of Paved Roads written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-22 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All phases of road developmentâ€"from construction and use by vehicles to maintenanceâ€"affect physical and chemical soil conditions, water flow, and air and water quality, as well as plants and animals. Roads and traffic can alter wildlife habitat, cause vehicle-related mortality, impede animal migration, and disperse nonnative pest species of plants and animals. Integrating environmental considerations into all phases of transportation is an important, evolving process. The increasing awareness of environmental issues has made road development more complex and controversial. Over the past two decades, the Federal Highway Administration and state transportation agencies have increasingly recognized the importance of the effects of transportation on the natural environment. This report provides guidance on ways to reconcile the different goals of road development and environmental conservation. It identifies the ecological effects of roads that can be evaluated in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads and offers several recommendations to help better understand and manage ecological impacts of paved roads.
