Book Arms Transfers and Dependence

Download or read book Arms Transfers and Dependence written by Christian Catrina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-23 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Arms Transfers and Dependence was written to provide a view of arms transfers in the context of the global distribution of power. The book analyses different types of dependence and is focused on comparing the enhancement of military capabilities as a result of arms transfers with the dependence that may be caused by those transfers. In doing so, it provides an overview of how particular structures of imports and exports of arms lead to dependence.

Download or read book China s Second Revolution written by Harry Harding and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has, since 1976, been enmeshed in an extraordinary program of renewal and reform. The obvious changes—the T-shirts, blue jeans, makeup and jewelry worn by Chinese youth; the disco music blaring from radios and loudspeakers on Chinese streets; the television antennas mushrooming from both urban apartment complexes and suburban peasant housing; the bustling free markets selling meat, vegetables and clothing in China's major cities—reflect a fundamental shift in the government's policy toward the economy and political life. Although doubts about the long-term commitment to reform arose after the student protests in December 1986 and the dismissal of Party General Secretary Hu Yaobang in January 1987, the scope of reform has been so broad and the pace of change so rapid, that the post-Mao era fully warrants Den Xiaoping's description of it as the "second revolution" undertaken by the Chinese Communist Party.

Book Congressional Policymaking in Sino U S Relations during the Post Cold War Era

Download or read book Congressional Policymaking in Sino U S Relations during the Post Cold War Era written by Joseph A Gagliano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that the President enjoys the preponderance of foreign policy power, however Congress has influenced China policymaking more than is generally recognized. The legislature has demonstrated consistent interests in the realm of China policy, and it has invariably pursued those interests through law-making. During the post-Cold War period in particular, the Sino-U.S. relationship has evolved in a radically changing international environment, marked by a power transition inherent in China's rise. The development of official relations between Washington and Beijing during the Cold War occurred in the shadow of an assertive Soviet power, when the United States and China were able to find common geopolitical ground in opposing Soviet expansion while overlooking longstanding political disagreements. The dissolution of the Soviet empire, however, put the United States and China on a new geostrategic footing. Political disagreements were no longer exempted in light of a counter-Soviet strategy, and the reduction in concern for the Soviet threat allowed policymakers in Washington to more aggressively pursue trade interests that conflicted with those of China. Given this international context, this book aims to discern how Congress reconciled competing Sino-U.S. interests in a post-Cold War era, when external threats no longer dictated an apparent hierarchy that favored China over the Soviet Union. This work will be of interest to students and scholars of US foreign policy, China Studies and international relations in general.

Book Management of Third World Crises in Adverse Partnership

Download or read book Management of Third World Crises in Adverse Partnership written by Imtiaz H. Bokhari and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imtiaz Bokhari details the world response to three regional conflicts--the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, the 1971 Indo-Pak crisis, and the Iran-Iraq war--and analyzes the dynamics of the comcomitant international crisis management. There exists a greater need for crisis management, the author argues, in a international system in which the disintegration of the old superpower competition and restraints has changed the rules of the game to the apparent advantage of the stronger regional powers.
