Book Trends In Continuum Physics Trecop 98 Proceedings Of The International Sym

Download or read book Trends In Continuum Physics Trecop 98 Proceedings Of The International Sym written by Maruszewski Bogdan T and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-03-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system is loosely defined as complex if it is composed of a large number of elements, interacting with each other, and the emergent global dynamics is qualitatively different from the dynamics of each one of the parts. The global dynamics may be either ordered or chaotic and among the most interesting emergent global properties are those of learning and adaptation.Complex systems, in the above sense, appear in many fields ranging from physics and technology to life and social sciences. Research in complex systems involves therefore a wide range of topics, studied in seemingly disparate fields. This calls for some effort to develop general principles and a common language so that tools developed in one field may be put to use in other fields.By collecting a few surveys of complex systems studies in physics and in technology and emphasizing their common mechanisms and interrelationships, this book attempts to contribute to the development of a common language in the sciences of complexity.Topics covered include: Integrated design in aeronautics; time and space decomposition of complex structures; complexity in electrical power networks; earthquake behaviour of structures; signal processing; fiability; use of unstable orbits in astrodynamics; dynamics of coupled oscillators; fuzziness; dark and bright solitons; neural networks; chaos and parametric perturbations; chaotic fluid dynamics; early vision and image restoration; stochastic processes in automated production lines.

Book Continuum Mechanics and Theory of Materials

Download or read book Continuum Mechanics and Theory of Materials written by Peter Haupt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition includes additional analytical methods in the classical theory of viscoelasticity. This leads to a new theory of finite linear viscoelasticity of incompressible isotropic materials. Anisotropic viscoplasticity is completely reformulated and extended to a general constitutive theory that covers crystal plasticity as a special case.

Book Chaotic Climate Dynamics

Download or read book Chaotic Climate Dynamics written by A. Selvam and published by Luniver Press. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmosphere is a chaotic system. As such it is inherently unpredictable. The book applies chaos theory to understand and predict climate systems. Author presents a cell dynamical system model for turbulent fluid flows. The model envisages the irregular space-time fluctuations of the atmospheric flow pattern generated as a consequence of the superimposition of a continuum of eddies. The natural space-time variability is quantified in terms of the universal inverse power-law form of the statistical normal distribution. A range of possible applications of the cell dynamical system model for weather and climate system is discussed. The book provides a comprehensive reference material for scientists and academicians working in the field of atmospheric sciences and related topics.

Book Surface Waves in Anisotropic and Laminated Bodies and Defects Detection

Download or read book Surface Waves in Anisotropic and Laminated Bodies and Defects Detection written by Robert V. Goldstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the variety of wave motions one can single out surface wave pr- agation since these surface waves often adjust the features of the energy transfer in the continuum (system), its deformation and fracture. Predicted by Rayleigh in 1885, surface waves represent waves localized in the vicinity ofextendedboundaries(surfaces)of?uidsorelasticmedia. Intheidealcase of an isotropic elastic half-space while the Rayleigh waves propagate along the surface, the wave amplitude (displacement) in the transverse direction exponentially decays with increasing distance away from the surface. As a resulttheenergyofsurfaceperturbationsislocalizedbytheRayleighwaves within a relatively narrow layer beneath the surface. It is this property of the surface waves that leads to the resonance phenomena that accompany the motion of the perturbation sources (like surface loads) with velocities close to the Rayleigh one; (see e. g. , R. V. Goldstein. Rayleigh waves and resonance phenomena in elastic bodies. Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (PMM), 1965, v. 29, N 3, pp. 608-619). It is essential to note that resonance phenomena are also inherent to the elastic medium in the case where initially there are no free (unloaded) surfaces. However, they occur as a result of an external action accompanied by the violation of the continuity of certain physical quantities, e. g. , by crack nucleation and dynamic propagation. Note that the aforementioned resonance phenomena are related to the nature of the surface waves as homogeneous solutions (eigenfunctions) of the dynamic elasticity equations for a half-space (i. e. nonzero solutions at vanishing boundary conditions).
