Book Private Banking in Europe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private bankers have been defined as owner-managers of their bank, irrespective of their type of activity, which could be in any field of banking, sometimes in conjunction with another one, especially commerce in the earlier periods. Analysing the experiences of European private bankers from the early modern period to the early twenty-first century, this book starts by examining the slow emergence of specialist private bankers, largely from amongst those who provided commercial credit. This initial consideration culminates in a focus upon the roles that they played, both during the onset of the continent's industrialization, and in orchestrating the finances of the emerging world economy. Its second theme is private banking's waning importance with the rise of joint-stock competitors, which became increasingly apparent in Britain during the mid-nineteenth century, and elsewhere within Europe some decades later. Lastly, attention is paid to the decline of private bankers in the twentieth century -a protracted and uneven decline, combined with the persistence and even the enduring success of some segments of the profession. It concludes with the revival of private banking in the late twentieth century as a response to the development of a new market - the management of personal wealth.

Book excerpt: Private banking is one of the highest growth and most profitable financial businesses in Europe. A large proportion of the market remains untapped and the 1990s are likely to bring significant expansion in developing countries. Private Banking in Europe provides new insights into the private banking industry, its growth and future, and emerging opportunities for private bankers and their clients. It debates the importance of global and local service; the potential dichotomy between the wealthy and the successful, and considers the private banking industry. A comparison of key players and their chosen markets and strategies is complemented by an exploration of the growth of intermediaries and unexpected competitiors. The work also includes a study of non-European influences. The book offers a valuable insight into private banking, through the eyes of the bankers themselves. The final chapter is devoted to private bankers' own view of their industry, their competition and future directions.

Book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe

Download or read book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe written by Manfred Pohl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.

Book Early Birds Late Risers and Sleeping Beauties

Download or read book Early Birds Late Risers and Sleeping Beauties written by Ivanna Vladkova Hollar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a period of privatization and restructuring, commercial banks in Central and Eastern Europe and, more recently, in the Balkans have rapidly expanded their lending to the private sector. This paper describes the causes of this expansion, assesses future trends, and evaluates its policy implications. It concludes that bank credit to the private sector is likely to continue rising faster than GDP in the next few years throughout the region, picking up also in countries where so far it has been stalled. Although this growth should be regarded as a structural and positive development, policymakers will have to evaluate carefully its implications for macroeconomic developments and financial stability.

Book New Era in Banking

Download or read book New Era in Banking written by Angel Berges and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis that began in 2007 triggered a break with banking practices of the past. Even as the crisis occurred, a broader set of economic, geopolitical, and technological forces were already reshaping the financial industry's transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. While these changes in the financial and global climate have led to a major overhaul of banking regulations and increased scrutiny of banks, they have also revealed opportunities for the development of a banking sector fit for the future. A New Era in Banking: The Landscape After the Battle identifies the main drivers of change at the heart of this wholesale transformation of the financial services industry. It examines the complex challenge for financial institutions to de-risk business models, reconnect with customers, and approach stakeholder value creation. Untangling the severe mutations that have taken place in the banking sector, A New Era in Banking, contextualizes these changes within larger trends that extend beyond the confines of the financial crisis. Banks are more vulnerable than ever to the crosscurrents of economic, demographic, regulatory, and technological change. However, by discussing how banks can operate as flexible, technology-enabled information businesses, A New Era in Banking advocates financial practices based not only on survival, but innovation.

Book Social Banking and Social Finance

Download or read book Social Banking and Social Finance written by Roland Benedikter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 2,000 years, banks have served to facilitate the exchange of money and to provide a variety of economic and financial services. During the most recent financial collapse and subsequent recession, beginning in 2008, banks have been vilified as perpetrators of the crisis, the public distrust compounded by massive public bailouts. Nevertheless, another form of banking has also emerged, with a focus on promoting economic sustainability, investing in community, providing opportunity for the disadvantaged, and supporting social, environmental, and ethical agendas. Social Banking and Social Finance traces the emergence of the “bank with a conscience” and proposes a new approach to banking in the wake of the economic crisis. Featuring innovations and initiatives in banking from Europe, Canada, and the United States, Roland Benedikter presents an alternative to traditional banking practices that are focused exclusively on profit maximization. He argues that social banking is not about changing the system, but about improving some of its core features by putting into use the "triple bottom line" principle of profit-people-planet. Important lessons can be learned by the success of social banks that may be useful for the greater task of improving the global financial system and avoiding economic crises in the future.

Book eCommerce for Financial Institutions in Germany and the USA

Download or read book eCommerce for Financial Institutions in Germany and the USA written by Klaus Schmidt and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2001-08-21 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,3 (A), Reutlingen University (Southeatern Louisiana University), language: English, abstract: 1. Executive Summary Online banks dig for continued quantitative growth in account number, transaction, and value of transaction since these factors are essential for valuation of the company at the stock exchange. The market for online financial services, or “eFinance”, is growing in Europe and the US. The German market is the biggest but not the fastest growing market within Europe. Financial institutions have to consider trends in the market in order to survive and prosper in this very dynamic and competitive environment. Simple products like current account, saving accounts and brokerage, incl. mutual funds, as well as personal loans will be sold more on the Internet. However, customers are using the Internet as an information tool but close the contact often at physical branches. In order to avoid this miss match, online financial institutions will be forced to obtain core competence in: • Customer relationship management The ability to capture, manipulate, and utilise customer data will be one of the principal keys in the competition for market share. • Multi-channel banking Customers increasingly demand being served any time, any place, anywhere. Meanwhile, employees and suppliers alike are more likely to be connected to the financial institution’s architecture. This addi-tional complexity will require innovative solutions by financial institu-tions, and most likely, a real-time online platform. • Customer satisfaction Technology problems such as poor system performances or poor execution of orders are a source of much frustration for customers. A dissatisfied customer with a greater number of options in the Internet is less likely to remain loyal for long. • Competitive differentiation Technology supports new product and feature development, as well as customisation, which allows online financial institutions to differentiate their offer from their competitors. Branding requires a sophisticated differentiation strategy. The online financial institution faces a number of challenges: a heavy transaction load, fast moving shifts in channel usage and a requirement to sew all the channels together. There are many requirements for the success of this business environment: security, data management, degree of customisation, and range of products and features. [...]

Book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe

Download or read book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe written by Rym Ayadi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A midst stormy waters, financial systems develop and evolve. New institutional forms and instruments are invented and put into use. Some of them turn out to be successful while others disappear: a natural process of creative and dynamic competition argues for diversity. Diversity offers an optimal environment in which new ideas can come to life, existing ideas can evolve and old ideas make a comeback. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the foundations of several decades of modern and innovative financial systems have suffered serious damage. This has triggered massive state interventions and has led authorities to revamp the regulatory structures and frameworks. While many voices have called for a return to more traditional approaches to banking and finance, no one has argued the merits of diversity. This book investigates the merits of a diverse banking system with a special focus on the performance and role of cooperative banks in seven European countries where they are prominent (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). The theoretical and empirical arguments that are developed in this book tend to support the view that it is economically beneficial to have stakeholder-value banks with a dual bottom-line function, such as cooperative banks. For those who accept this premise, it would suggest that policy-makers should not take or support actions that could jeopardise this valuable element of the financial system in various countries in Europe and of the emerging integrated European financial system.
