Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trench Warfare: A Manual for Officers and Men It is a safe bet that when the German army started for Paris they had plans for use in the event of disaster. The disaster occurred, and a new type of warfare requiring the highest courage, skill and endurance was born .I say born because although trench warfare was known before, it died in birth compared to this war, for the amount of science, energy and variety of weapons used. More earth has been removed by a combination of man, pick and shovel in making these trenches than was excavated to make the Panama Canal possible, and in less time. It is my object in this book to give a faint idea and knowledge of the trenches, and to approximately explain the way warfare is carried on, and I offer the information contained herein as a basic foundation on which to use the further knowledge you will gain as an officer, and which, for obvious reasons, I will not and cannot give here. He saw service along the Belgian front, and in August 1916 was given a commission in the British Army. At the time this manual on trench warfare was published in 1917 he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the infantry service with the British Expeditionary Force on the French front. The information set forth in his manual was garnered from different instruction courses and his own observations and practise whilst on active duty, and covers all aspects of trench building, maintenance, communication, use of weapons, etc., together with notes on the duties of platoon commanders and officers. Illustrated with diagrams. Shuter was also the author of Over There and Back in Three Uniforms: Being the Experiences of an American Boy in the Canadian, British and American Armies at the Front and Through No Man's Land.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knowledge for War: Every Officer's Handbook for the Front The Syllabus is necessarily long and, Owing to the number of Official books and to the0 length at which they deal with the selected subjects, most young officers find it difficult to cover the full course in the short time available. There is also a good deal in the Syllabus which cannot be found in the manuals. In' Knowledge for War references are given to the Official manuals for everything in them touching the prescribed course. Since the manuals were written many new ideas and methods have been adopted, especially from the experience gained during the present war. These have been dealt with in pamphlets issued from time to time by the -war Office. As few young officers have access to them, an attempt is made in the present volume to condense all that is necessary within convenient limits. It must be clearly understood that Knowledge for War is in no way intended to replace the official text books, but should be used in conjunction with them. A copy of the Syllabus, which has been closely adhered to, is printed in the beginning as a guide to the contents of the book. For obvious reasons more than half the book is devoted to Trench Warfare. I feel that no apology is needed for devoting so much space to this important subject in all its aspects, even though it has meant the exclusion of chapters on Open warfare.
