"Tremors" consists of Îcamera-less pictures: ' working in the darkroom, Breuer employs an assortment of household tools--a hot plate or an electric pan, for example--and moves them with varying degrees of pressure across photographic paper, registering their movement as an irregular, seismographic trace. The paper responds to the heat from the tool by recording a latent image, which, once developed, turns the emulsion a range of colors from deep umber to burnt sienna and charcoal black. In "Ephemera," Breuer goes one step further in relinquishing his commitment to a particular medium and literally attacks standard drawing paper, using the format of generically designed handmade books. The pages document direct activities taking place deep within the book cavity--an ignited fuse creeps through the book gutter, leaving a snake-like trail, fanning out in a smudge of brown smoke; an electric shock mars the heart of a centerfold in an explosive display of colorful splashes.

There is no telling what Tammy might have further achieved in the hardboiled, demimonde world of hers and how many more lurid tabloid scandals provoked, but the truth was that by the ripe old age of twenty-four and after having already amassed riches beyond her wildest fantasies, not only did a vague languor start settling in, which was distressing enough, but to her rising chagrin and just as potentially calamitous to her walk of life, most of the nuggets of gold she unwittingly, paradoxically mined of late were from a hitherto unsuspected or blithely repressed tender quarry within her own heart. Yep, it was too woefully true, especially for the motley horde of paparazzi, troubadours, harlequins, hangers-on, and others scrambling in her wake, whose livelihoods depended on her and the buzz she created: the ruthless edge and cutthroat zeal, the ineffable force of nature that vaulted her foremost in the scintillating pageant were dissipating, imperceptibly but inexorably. Tammy was canny enough to know that once she started feeling anything but pitilessness toward her intended prey and purpose, she herself was doomed. And so she quietly retreats from her perilous world of intrigue and seduction. But while sojourning in a certain place on her increasingly restive quest to escape ennui, serendipitously, in the elegant bar of a palatial hotel Tammy's curiosity is piqued by a drunken loner babbling aloud, an apparent habitué of the establishment by the manner with which he is obsequiously coddled by the staff. After discreetly inquiring, she learns that this woebegone oaf is the disgraced, outcast scion of one of the country's grandest fortunes, an empire built, literally, on peddling rags. This debauched pariah, whose name is Eberley, resides in a penthouse suite many stories above the bar all arranged by his curmudgeonly father to keep him, it is openly whispered, as far away as possible. Although in his lethargic, laconic, oafishly oblivious and absurd kind of way the outcast proves to be obdurately resistant to easy seduction, which Tammy discovers much to her vexation, after much ado she succeeds in gaining entrée to the reclusive magnifico his father and emperor of empire who is, as she gradually corroborated from many sources during her arduous interlude spent in prodding the oaf his son, a treasury unto himself, as impervious to the vicissitudes of fortune as an oil-rich, rags-to-riches nation-state. Light, Paper, Process features the work of seven artists—Alison Rossiter, Marco Breuer, James Welling, Lisa Oppenheim, Chris McCaw, John Chiara, and Matthew Brandt—who investigate the possibilities of analog photography by finding innovative, surprising, and sometimes controversial ways to push light-sensitive photographic papers and chemical processing beyond their limits. A panoply of practices emerges in the work of these artists. Some customize cameras with special lenses or produce images on paper without a camera or film. Others load paper, rather than film, in the camera or create contact-printing with sources of light other than the enlarger, while still others use expired photographic papers and extraneous materials, such as dust and sweat, selected to match the particular subject of the photograph. All of the artists share a willingness to embrace accident and chance. Trial and error contribute to an understanding of the materials and their potential, as do the attitudes of underlying curiosity and inventive interrogation. The act of making each image is like a performance, with only the photographer present. The results are stunning. This lavish publication accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from April 14 to September 6, 2015.

In Without the Least Tremor, M. Ross Romero considers the death of Socrates as a sacrificial act rather than an execution, and analyzes the implications of such an understanding for the meaning of the Phaedo. Platos recounting of Socratess death fits many of the conventions of ancient Greek sacrificial ritual. Among these are the bath, the procession, Socratess appearance as a bull, the libation, the offering of a rooster to Asclepius, the treatment of Socratess body and corpse, and Phaedos memorialization of Socrates. Yet in a powerful moment, Socratess death deviates from a sacrifice as he drinks the pharmakon without the least tremor. Developing the themes of suffering and wisdom as they connect to this scene, Romero demonstrates how the embodied Socrates is setting forth an eikôn of the death of the philosopher. Drawing on comparisons with tragedy and comedy, he argues that Socratess death is more fittingly described as self-sacrifice than merely an execution or suicide. After considering the implications of these themes for the souls immortality and its relationship to the body, the book concludes with an exploration of the place of sacrifice within ethical life.
