Book Making Charcoal and Biochar

Download or read book Making Charcoal and Biochar written by Rebecca Oaks and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Charcoal and Biochar is written with the interested amateur in mind, with the certainty that anyone who has a go at making charcoal will soon get the bug. Before you know it, you will be upgrading to a shiny new retort and there will be no looking back! This book gives a wide range of possibilities for making charcoal on a small scale and for commercial production. There are chapters on the heritage skills of earth burns, the enduring popularity of metal kilns and the future represented by the charcoal retort. Biochar - or small particle charcoal - has been heralded as an ancient but rediscovered 'super substance' that can increase soil fertility and productivity whilst locking up carbon into the ground. This book looks at the ongoing discussion and weighs up the evidence. It concludes with a celebration of the myriad ways in which charcoal can be put to use. Covering the essentials for starting a business such as legislation and marketing, there are also chapters on why charcoal is in the ascendency from the ubiquitious barbecue to the most recent research into biochar and carbon sequestration. Fully illustrated with 195 colour photographs.

Their once evergreen environment has turned into a lifeless desert. The Cobbler, on the lowest rung of the social ladder and in fact a slave for all intents and purposes, rises to the occasion. Leading a "Save the Environment" movement, he begins with the call to protect the lowly herb and then makes a frontal attack on the logging industry, gaining powerful enemies. Among them is Kurtin, part of the most prominent family in the community and a logging merchant intent on keeping the old order in place.Odds are that tradition will win, defeating the forces of change. But then Mother Nature takes a stand. As a result of a cruel drought that almost decimates their herds, the Kikatu can either stay put and starve, or move in search of water and fodder, but perhaps still die for trying.

Book excerpt: The last of the nomads, the Kikatu settle in Sablana in the great East African plains and proceed to wreck havoc on the environment. They are wary about adopting new ways, and when someone invents a shoe, they dub him and all of his descendents "cobblers" and make him a slave. In later times, the Kikatus happily use his invention while his descendants remain slaves. When J, one of the inventor's descendents, gets in a fight with Kurtin, a nobleman, history repeats itself, and he's put on trial. But he claims self-defense and miraculously wins his case. With one victory in hand, J must face off with Kurtin again, this time over logging activities which threaten to lay the land waste. Tradition and self-interest combine to frustrate his efforts, but he refuses to give up. As J struggles to convince a disbelieving people to change their environmentally unsound ways before it's too late there is one person on his side, Hodon, the chief's daughter, who secretly loves him. Find out if J can defy his slave status to save his people and the environment in Cobbler King.

  • Author : C.J. Heusser

Download or read book Ice Age Southern Andes written by C.J. Heusser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-11-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Andes, stretching from the subtropics to the subantarctic, are ideally located for palaeoenvironmental research. Over the broad and continuous latitudinal extent of the cordillera (-24˚), vegetation is adjusted to climatic gradients and atmospheric circulation patterns. Opposed to the prevailing Southern Westerlies, the Southern Andes are positioned to receive the brunt of the winds, while biota are set to record the shifting of incoming storm systems over time. Sequential, latitudinally-placed, sedimentary deposits containing microfossils and macroremains, as archives of past vegetation and climate, make possible the detection of equatorward and poleward displacement of plant communities and, as a consequence, changes in climatic controls. No terrestrial setting in the Southern Hemisphere is so unique for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction during and since the last ice age. Twenty radiocarbon-dated fossil pollen and spore records chosen to place emphasis on the last ice age include high-resolution, submillennial data sets that also cover the Holocene, thus providing contrast between present interglacial and past glacial ages. From a refined data base, the records constitute the foundation for interpreting factors responsible for vegetation change over >50,000 14C years, glacial-interglacial migration and refugial patterns for a diversity of taxa, and the extent of intrahemispheric and polar hemispheric synchroneity versus asynchroneity.
