This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles, Vol. 2 Few trees Of a similar character are so beautiful as the two common laburnums. When fully in flower, and laden with streaming racemes Of golden colour, as they usually are in late May and June, nothing can surpass them in effectiveness. The German popular name, Golden Rain, is peculiarly appropriate. They look their best in a group Of three to six trees, with a dark evergreen mass, like holly or holm oak, behind them. Of very easy culture and raised readily from Seed, no Special directions are needed for their treatment. They thrive in any soil that is not waterlogged. It is Often advisable to remove the seed-pods as soon as the flowers are past. In some seasons the trees develop and ripen enormous crops Of pods, and this, besides being Of no value or beauty, is apt to induce a stunted condition Of growth and reduce succeeding crops Of blossom. Laburnums are not particularly long-lived, and attention to this matter will be repaid, especially in the case of valued or fine specimens, by increased longevity. The seeds contain a poisonous alkaloid, and children have been known to die from eating them in a green state. The heart-wood of the trunk is Of a dark colour and very hard; it is sometimes used as a substitute for ebony, occasionally also for furniture making. Many trees and Shrubs of the Leguminosae can be grafted on laburnum, and the abundance of its seed and easy cultivation have made it very much used as a stock for many of its allies. Download or read book Trees and Shrubs of the British Isles Vol 1 written by Charles Samuel Cooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubs of the British Isles, Vol. 1: Native and Acclimatised This work has been prepared to enable the reader to identify not only the Trees and Shrubby Plants of the British Isles, but also the more common cultivated Trees and Shrubs, and of presenting in a concise form much valuable information on such subjects as Timber and its uses. Insect and Fungoid Pests, the more common Galls, the native habitat, the date of introduction to this country, methods of propagation, &c. &c. Over 550 species of Trees and Shrubs are described under the headings of Flowers, Inflorescence, Fruit, Foliage, Mode of Growth and Winter Buds, each plant under it natural order, and the characteristics of the Order preceding each group. Although there have been many works produced dealing with Trees, we know of none giving detailed descriptions of such a number of species, and the Shrubs, it is believed, have never been so dealt with. Many readers are well informed as to most of the herbaceous plants so often described in popular books, yet they have little or no knowledge of the great majority of the Trees and Shrubs which specially help to make this country so beautiful. It is the Authors' hope that their work will not only enable such persons to identify all the species common to these Islands, and many that have been introduced, but will make them familiar with their Habitat, Form, Structure, Beauty, Uses, &c. The work appeals to Art Masters, Botanists, Field Naturalists. Foresters, the general reader who wishes to know something of Trees and Shrubs. Horticulturists. Natural History and Scientific Societies, Owners of Estates and Gardens, Students. Teachers, and to the users of General Reference Libraries. The Authors wide experience as practical botanists and field naturalists has been brought to hear on the subject, and where this has been inadequate, most careful research has been carried out, and no effort spared to make the work absolutely reliable and up to date. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles, Vol. 1 In the case of nomenclature of species, I have with few exceptions clung to what is known as the Kew rule of giving a plant the specific name first published in conjunction with the proper genus. In the preparation of this work I have had the enormous advantage of being able to make full use, not only of the magnificent collections of living plants at Kew, but also of the herbarium of trees and shrubs which has been in course of formation there for thirty years, at first by the late Mr Geo. Nicholson, and during the last thirteen years by myself. There are very few of the descriptions that have not been made from authentic material - living or dried.
