Book The Landscape Improvement of Rural School Grounds Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Landscape Improvement of Rural School Grounds Classic Reprint written by J. W. Gregg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Landscape Improvement of Rural School Grounds The following bulletin, written at our request by Professor J. W. Gregg of the University of California, with the addition of lists of trees, shrubs and flowers, suitable for school grounds, furnished by Assistant Professor Ralph T. Stevens, and Miss K. D. Jones, while designed to meet some of the immediate and pressing needs of our schools, has elements of permanent value. It, therefore, should not only receive careful consideration now, but be kept for future reference and study whenever the planning or planting of school grounds is to be undertaken. The detailed plans for grounds are sufficiently numerous and varied to be distinctly helpful to any district where the school grounds are ample enough to admit of landscape treatment. Grounds of such amplitude are of course desirable for every school. It is not always feasible to provide them in large cities, but there is no suburban or rural district in California that can not have them if only there be a' resolute and an intelligently directed effort to do so. In districts where the present population is too small to provide or to maintain such grounds, the desired ends can be obtained by judicious consolida tion of neighboring schools. Such consolidation would result in a triple benefit, for not only could the school grounds be enlarged and beauti fied, but the school buildings could be made more spacious, and more convenient, while the courses of instruction, made more numerous and more varied, could be carried on under better conditions. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Tree Planting in the Plains The experimental plantings herein described in detail are given not only as a record Of the beginnings Of an important work, but as indi cating what are believed to be useful mixtures Of trees for planting in the West. Sufficient time has not elapsed, even in the Oldest plantings described, for final conclusions to be drawn; but the notes on kinds will be found of interest in connection with the experiments, and the whole is believed to afford a basis for selection Of trees for the various States included in the treeless area. While this bulletin has to do primarily with Western planting, it may be found a safe guide in many directions for forest planting within the timbered regions Of the country, especially as to general principles involved. Experiments in planting in cut-over lands in the pineries Of Minnesota and Pennsylvania have been begun by the Department, but are not yet sufficiently advanced to warrant even a progress report. Book Tree Growing in the Public Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tree Growing in the Public Schools Classic Reprint written by Ernest B. Babcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree Growing in the Public Schools T ree-study and tree-growing comprise a special phase of nature study and gardening. Gardening is one kind of manual work that is possible in some degree for every school. Moreover it is found to offer the most in interest, opportunity and educational value of all manual work when properly conducted, while it can be correlated with most of the other studies to great advantage. Children have studied about trees in school for years. As a part of nature - study the work with trees has been largely confined to practice in identification and to observation of life histories, together with stories about trees in lower grades, and, rarely, elementary forestry from books and bulletins in upper grades. This is good as far as'it goes, but it lacks the one thing essential to vital teaching. Boys and girls should learn to grow trees. Then they will have a sound basis for intelligent appreciation of the economic importance of trees. We have made pupils learn dry facts about lumbering long enough. Now let us have them first understand what it means to grow trees for lumber and we shall see the next generation more intelligent on the great subject of conservation. Book Tree Planting on Streets and Highways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tree Planting on Streets and Highways Classic Reprint written by William F. Fox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree Planting on Streets and Highways Trees should be set out along every road for shade. In addition, the farm lanes can be lined advantageously with fruit or nut-bearing trees that will bring money to their owner and add to the attractive appearance of his surroundings. Objections may be made in some localities to placing trees along a public road, because their shade would tend to make it wet and muddy. If such conditions exist, the fault is in the road, and not in the trees; there are some very muddy highways along which nothing has been planted. Although a row of trees may retard somewhat the evaporation of moisture at the surface of the roadbed, at the same time they drain its foundation by the rapid absorption of water through their roots. When a roadbed is properly constructed, drained and ditched, the trees will do no harm; on the contrary, they will furnish a grateful shade to the traveler, and prevent dust without creating mud.
