Book excerpt: Exotic trees in England and a rainforest in Zurich, a seed bank on the arctic island of Spitsbergen and urban agriculture in Tanzania, trade in old trees in China and biodiversity in Senegal. Tree Nursery. Cultivating the Urban Jungle uses the example of plant production throughout the world to demonstrate the manifold relationships that exist between human beings and nature. Numerous essays and detailed accounts examine current phenomena like desertification in the Sahel, greening projects in Shanghai and the genesis of rooftop gardens in London. Travelogues from Europe, Africa and Asia consider the role played by a range of economic and historical factors in the significant influence that tree nurseries have come to exercise on urban planning and landscape architecture.

Download or read book Diseases of Woody Ornamentals and Trees in Nurseries written by Ronald Klair Jones and published by American Phytopathological Society. This book was released on 2001 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extension agents from around the country offer practical, informative articles addressing the diseases of crops grown in nurseries. Some introductory pieces address abiotic and biotic causes of disease and eleven general diseases such as Botrytis blight and Verticillium wilt. The diseases to which 64 shade trees, shrubs, ground covers, and subtropical ornamentals are susceptible are then discussed in detail, along with methods for the diseases' control. The remaining 17 articles address aspects of disease management, from an introduction to the management of infectious plant diseases in the nursery to tissue culture of woody plants and regulatory control issues. c. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings is a compilation of 24 papers that were presented at the regional meetings of the forest and conservation nursery associations in the United States in 2006. The Western Forest and Conservation Nursery Association meeting was held at the Hilton Resort Hotel and Conference Center in Eugene, Oregon on June 19 to 22. The meeting was hosted by the USDA Forest Service Dorena Genetic Resource Center and Plum Creek Container Nursery. Morning technical sessions were followed by field trips to USDA Forest Service Dorena Genetic Resource Center and Plum Creek Container Nursery in Cottage Grove, and USDA Agricultural Research Service National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Corvallis. Subject matter for the technical sessions included bareroot and container nursery culturing and monitoring, disease management, and native species restoration. The Southern Forest Nursery Association meeting was held July 10 to 13 at the Holiday Inn Select in Tyler, Texas. The meeting was hosted by the Texas Forest Service Indian Mound Nursery. Technical sessions were followed by tours of the International Paper SuperTree Nursery, Agtoprof, and Kiepersol Estate, outside Tyler; International Paper Forest Seed Center in Douglass; and Texas Forest Service Indian Mound Nursery in Alto. Subject matter for the technical sessions included labor relations and regulations, bareroot and container nursery culturing, hardwood management, pesticide use, and outplanting strategies.

Download or read book Trees on the Farm written by Steven Charles Franzel and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002-03-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most published books on agroforestry have focused on biophysical aspects. There has been a lack of scientifically rigorous information about the socioeconomic features of agroforestry, and the adoption of agroforestry practices by farmers. This book fills that gap by assessing the adoption of selected agroforestry practices developed with African farmers, describing methods, and drawing out the implications for research, development, and policy. The volume includes five case studies of research conducted in Kenya and Zambia to evaluate the adoption potential of agroforestry. The cases illustrate methods of farm and village technology design, testing, and analysis that are applicable to a wide range of natural resource management practices.Along with the case studies, the contents also include chapters on: methods for assessing agroforestry adoption potential, promoting new agroforestry technologies: policy lessons from on-farm research, and assessing adoption potential: lessons learned and future directions.
