Book A Systematic Review of Forest Fertilization Research in Interior British Columbia

Download or read book A Systematic Review of Forest Fertilization Research in Interior British Columbia written by Anya Reid and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the large body of published and unpublished research that sup- ports the FFT Program, uncertainty remains about the extent of the biologi- cal response of tree growth to fertilization by different tree species under different ecosystem, site, and stand conditions. [...] To determine the state of knowledge and where further research and data analysis are needed, we con- ducted a systematic review of literature on the growth responses of interior tree species to fertilization. [...] Relative growth response of interior spruce to fertilization ranged from 9 to 109% for height, from 75 to 277% for volume, and from 27 to 203% for basal area (Table 1). [...] Two other topics of concern with respect to the resilience of British Colum- bia forests to climate change are the interactions between forest fertilization 15 Basal area (%) Volume (%) Height (%) and (1) damage due to insects, disease, and weather, and (2) carbon fluxes and storage. [...] Effects of nitrogen source and season of application on the nu- trition and growth of lodgepole pine.

Book Lodgepole Pine Nutrition and Fertilization

Download or read book Lodgepole Pine Nutrition and Fertilization written by Robert Peter Brockley and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes results obtained from 33 lodgepole pine fertilization research installations established at the Kalamalka Forestry Centre in Vernon, British Columbia. Most of the research was conducted in 15- to 35-year-old thinned, fire-origin stands in the montane spruce and sub-boreal spruce biogeoclimatic zones. Results are discussed with regard to such research topics as: pre- and post-fertilization foliar nutrient status; response to nitrogen additions; effects of nitrogen application rate; effects of post-thinning stand density and site index; effects of timing of fertilization and thinning; small-mammal damage; and effects of snow accumulation.

Book Compensatory Growth an Adaptation to Environmental Stress in Plants and Animals

Download or read book Compensatory Growth an Adaptation to Environmental Stress in Plants and Animals written by Chao Li and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compensatory growth (CG) is defined as a change in growth rate (usually positive) following a period of reduced biomass or slowed growth due to some perturbation (e.g. nutrient deprivation, parasite load, tissue damage, or natural/anthropogenic disturbance). The phenomenon occurs throughout the plant and animal kingdoms, and while it is primarily observed in species with short lifespans, it has also been detected in longer-living organisms such as trees. CG occurs at the individual level as a variable life history trait but has the potential to impact the performance of whole populations and communities.

Book Regenerating British Columbia s Forests

Download or read book Regenerating British Columbia s Forests written by R. Parish and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerating British Columbia's Forests will assist those responsible for planning reforestation projects to reach informed decisions and will challenge them to consider primarily the biological factors basic to reforestation success rather than short-term costs and production technology. Although its main audience is practising foresters and forestry students of British Columbia, the text will be of considerable interest to foresters in other parts of Canada, the United States, and Europe who manage reforestation.

Book Thinning Lodgepole Pine in Southeastern British Columbia

Download or read book Thinning Lodgepole Pine in Southeastern British Columbia written by Wayne David Johnstone and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the effects, 46 years after treatment in 1952-53, of the thinning of a 53-year-old lodgepole pine stand growing in south-east British Columbia. At the study plots in the montane spruce biogeoclimatic zone, five thinning treatments plus unthinned controls were established. Results are presented with regard to effects of thinning treatments on tree diameter, tree height & volume, survival, stand basal area, and stand volume. In 1980-83, the stand was infested by mountain pine beetle, and the results also demonstrate the effect of thinning on pine response to beetle attack.

Download or read book Forest BioEnergy Production written by Seppo Kellomäki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, forest biomass or wood has been among the main energy sources of humans around the world. Since the industrial revolution, fossil fuels have replaced wood and become the dominant source of energy. The use of fossil fuels has the disadvantage of increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs), especially carbon dioxide (CO2), with the consequent warming of global climate and changes in precipitation. In this context, the substitution of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources like forest biomass is among the ways to mitigate climate change. This book summarizes recent experiences on how to manage forest land to produce woody biomass for energy use and what are the potentials to mitigate climate change by substituting fossil fuels in energy production. In this context, the book addresses how management can affect the supply of energy biomass using short-rotation forestry and the conventional forestry applying long rotations. Furthermore, the book outlines the close interaction between the ecological systems and industrial systems, which controls the carbon cycle between the atmosphere and biosphere. In this context, sustainable forest management is a key to understand and control indirect carbon emissions due to the utilization of forest biomass (e.g. from management, harvesting and logistics, and ecosystem processes), which are often omitted in assessing the carbon neutrality of energy systems based on forest biomass. The focus in this book is on forests and forestry in the boreal and temperate zones, particularly in Northern Europe, where the woody biomass is widely used in the energy industry for producing energy.
