Book The European Atomic Energy Community in the European Union Context

Download or read book The European Atomic Energy Community in the European Union Context written by Ilina Cenevska and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ilina Cenevska’s new book, The European Atomic Energy Community in the European Union Context: The 'Outsider' Within explores the unique nature of the Euratom Community as an entity that establishes a supranational regulation in the civil nuclear industry, which, while formally belonging to the European Union construct, is coincidentally somewhat kept ‘outside’ the mainstream developments in the Union. The book surveys Euratom’s status as an ‘outsider within’ the European Union through the correlation between the principles and mechanisms particular to the functioning of the Euratom legal framework and those devised under the Union framework stricto sensu, focusing on two specific areas - nuclear safeguards and health and safety in the nuclear domain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the former allies of World War II divided Germany into two provisional states, no one would have predicted that this would last for nearly half a century. Nor could anyone have predicted that sixty years later, Germany would have shaken off its Nazi past so thoroughly as to emerge as a key player in Western politics.Gert-Joachim Glaessner explains this historic transformation and provides an in-depth introduction to the German political system, its foundations and developments since 1949. Themes covered include the development of the FDR and GDR during the Cold War, the politics of Westernization, the controversies of West Germany's role in NATO and European integration. The author also examines parliamentary institutions, the role of the German Chancellor, party structure and organized interest groups. The book includes reference material from key documents, such as the German Constitution.Demonstrating how Germany went from political pariah to a model of modern liberal democracy, Glaessner offers a concise overview of the German political system in the post-war period.

Book European Security in the 1990s

Download or read book European Security in the 1990s written by W. Laqueur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely if ever have the political, economic, and military foundations of the Western Alliance been in such a state of flux. Walter Laqueur and Leon Sloss, therefore, deserve credit not just for the quality of the analysis in this superb book but also for the timeliness of its appearance. As Laqueur says in his chapter "Touring the Western European Defense Hori zon," if the likely development of European defense policies is not particularly reassuring, at least it gives no grounds for despair. The list of problems we face is a daunting one. First there is the spiralling cost of defense expenditures, particularly in the absence of significant NATO or inter-European cooperation. This is particu larly serious in light of the reluctance to increase, or even maintain, current expen ditures in the midst of Mikhail Gorbachev's "peace offensive" and the extraordinary changes in Eastern Europe, both of which have had a dramatic impact on Western public opinion. There is also a problem in the perceived relative economic decline of the United States vis-a-vis Western Europe and Japan, which only exacerbates calls to reduce the number of American troops in Europe. Other dangers to the political cohesion and military credibility of the alliance include demographic trends that threaten current manpower levels, transatlantic acrimony over the burden-sharing issue, and political pressures (particularly in West Germany) toward denucleariza tion and even neutralism.

Book The Contemporary Relevance of Carl Schmitt

Download or read book The Contemporary Relevance of Carl Schmitt written by Matilda Arvidsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Carl Schmitt have to offer to ongoing debates about sovereignty, globalization, spatiality, the nature of the political, and political theology? Can Schmitt’s positions and concepts offer insights that might help us understand our concrete present-day situation? Works on Schmitt usually limit themselves to historically isolating Schmitt into his Weimar or post-Weimar context, to reading him together with classics of political and legal philosophy, or to focusing exclusively on a particular aspect of Schmitt’s writings. Bringing together an international, and interdisciplinary, range of contributors, this book explores the question of Schmitt’s relevance for an understanding of the contemporary world. Engaging the background and intellectual context in which Schmitt wrote his major works – often with reference to both primary and secondary literature unavailable in English – this book will be of enormous interest to legal and political theorists.

Book The Western European Union

Download or read book The Western European Union written by Sally Rohan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This full-term study of the Western European Union (WEU) brings to life the history of Europe’s search for a co-operative security and defence order, from its post World War II origins to the present day. Establishing the WEU as a support organization, designed to promote the two security "ideas" of collective defence and integration through the primary organizations of Alliance and Community, this book offers a window onto the challenges faced in the development and management of NATO and the evolving EC/EU over time. As the WEU’s historical journey unfolds, the frequently competing visions of the future organization of the European security space are exposed in the fluctuating nature of its own functional evolution and devolution. A hybrid organization driven by its dual support role, the constructively ambiguous and conveniently autonomous WEU was to provide a mechanism through which divergent interests could converge and inherent tensions be relieved, preventing NATO and EC/EU stagnation. This book offers fresh insight into the means by which the gradual transformation of the institutional framework of European security was enabled, and stakes the WEU’s claim as a fundamental and life-long contributor to the stability of the European security system.
