FFT provides multilevel interventions targeting family relations and communications to promote individual and systemic change. As such, the family variables, particularly contexts resulting in conflicts between family members, are noteworthy elements of family functioning in the treatment of FFT. Due to the limited research on factors of family conflict during the midtreatment process of FFT, the present study examined FFT therapists’ experiences of family conflict as midtreatment impediments to progress. A qualitative method of inquiry was employed to analyze archival data from a federally funded parent study. The Grounded Theory methodology was implemented to explore, examine, and analyze a subset of FFT cases in which family conflict was identified as a midtreatment problem. Five themes emerged during the process of coding and analysis, which are family relationship issues, negative family dynamics, family communication problems, therapist-family alliance and treatment engagement, and therapist affective and cognitive experiences. The study found that the construct of family conflict encompasses a multitude of past relational issues as well as recurring maladaptive interaction patterns within families. Furthermore, the therapist’s cognitive and affective experiences, role in alliance-formation and rupture repair, phase-specific intervention implementations, and model adherence all have important implications on the midtreatment process, family progress, and outcome of treatment" --Provided by publisher.
