Download or read book Treatment of corruption in Festus Iyayi s The Contract written by Abdullahi Haruna and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2008 in the subject Literature - Africa, , language: English, abstract: Corruption has been considered endemic to Nigeria. How do Nigerian literary artists depict this social illness in their literary works? This article examines the treatment of corruption in Iyayi’s "The Contract". The discourse focuses on the social levels at which corruption is manifested and the effects of corruption on individuals and the society as depicted in the novel. The results will indicate that the novel exposes some identified social ills which become endemic when political and institutional leaders put aside their responsibilities of nation building and succumb to the lure of lucre. Specifically, the leaders depicted in this novel use the awards of contracts ostensibly for nation building as blinds for corrupt self-enrichment and embezzlements of public funds.

Book The Themes of Corruption and Incompetence in the Novels of Three Nigerian Writers

Download or read book The Themes of Corruption and Incompetence in the Novels of Three Nigerian Writers written by Abdullahi Haruna and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, language: English, abstract: This paper analyses the depiction of corruption and incompetence in Festus Iyayi’s "Violence", Chinua Achebe’s "Anthills of the Savannah" and Kris Obodumu’s "Die a little". Literature from any part of the world is a response to definite historical and socio-political variables of its time. African literature, to a large extent, could be considered as protest literature. The protest culture rooted in the protest against slavery and colonialism now bears on post-independence social ills like corruption and incompetence which are so widespread in African political and governmental circles. Nigerian writers, especially novelists, have played a significant role in the growth and development of African literature through a vast array of highly successful novels. Studies show that Nigerian novelists like Festus Iyayi, Chinua Achebe and Kris Obodumu direct their critical searchlights on problems associated with corruption and incompetence in governmental circles which seem endemic to Nigeria. Festus Iyayi in "Violence" is very much disturbed by the rate at which his society is decaying through the effect of corruption and incompetence after independence. The novel is basically set to reflect the moral decadence in Nigerian society between 1960 to the early 80s. Eight years after the publication of "Violence" corruption and incompetence had not only remained the order of the day in the Nigerian Society, but had also taken a sophisticated dimension. "Anthills of the Savannah" could be said to be the means through which Achebe shows his disgust for corruption, mediocrity and incompetence in the Nigerian political circle during the years of military dictatorship. Obodumu’s "Die a Little" is concerned with the examination of the inevitable consequences of bad national economic policy hastily put in place by a corrupt and incompetent regime without considering its impact on the people.

Book Lagos

  • Author : Kaye Whiteman
  • Publisher : Andrews UK Limited
  • Release : 2013-10-21
  • ISBN : 1908493895
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Lagos written by Kaye Whiteman and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, expected in some projections to have a population of 25 million by 2025. This will make it the biggest metropolis in sub-Saharan Africa and possibly the world's third largest city. This phenomenal and continuing growth gives it a heady turbulence, especially as it only took on the form of a coherent urban entity in the eighteenth century. After Nigeria's independence Lagos remained both trading hub and, for thirty years, a federal capital and political vortex. Now its driving sense of 'can-do', its outreach and vitality, make it a fulcrum and a channel for commercial and cultural talent. Kaye Whiteman explores a city that has constantly re-invented itself, from the first settlement on an uninhabited island to the creation of the port in the early years of the twentieth century. Lagos is still defined by its curious network of islands and lagoons, where erosion and reclamation lead to a permanently shifting topography, but history has thrust it into the role of a burgeoning mega-city, overcoming all nature's obstacles. The city's melting-pot has fertilised a unique literary and artistic flowering that is only now beginning to be appreciated by a world that has only seen slums and chaos. COLONIAL CITY: Portuguese influences; the 1861 Treaty of Cession and the British colonialists; architectural traces: schools and government buildings; the move towards independence. CITY OF ENTREPRENEURS: trading through the centuries: Sierra Leoneans and Brazilians; traditional markets and modern malls; the Central Business District. THE CITY OF WORDS AND MUSIC: a counterpoint to the alleged philistinism of its businessmen; the views of writers Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe; artist and sculptor Ben Enwonwu; the musical genius Fela Kuti.

Book excerpt: Okey Ndibe's critically-acclaimed debut novel, Arrows of Rain is a vital exploration into the importance of speaking truth to power even when no one is listening. In the country of Madia, the General has declared himself Life-President of the Republic. According to him, ninety-nine percent of Madians voted for it. On the day of his ascendency, however, a young sex worker is found dead on a beach. The last man who spoke to her, the 'madman' Bukuru, is adamant he saw her being attacked by Madian soldiers. His claim quickly lands him in prison, forced to defend himself against the charge of the woman's murder. Armed only with the truth, he must set upon the perilous scheme of releasing his story to the world. A brave and powerful work of fiction, Arrows of Rain continues to resonate as a cautionary tale against corruption and oppression. 'Highly evocative.' Wole Soyinka 'The greatest villain in Okey Ndibe's Arrows of Rain is silence.' Vanity Fair 'A Kafkaesque, imaginative novel of great necessity and power.' Kirkus Reviews
