Book Diagnosing and Treating Adult Cancers and Associated Impairments

Download or read book Diagnosing and Treating Adult Cancers and Associated Impairments written by National Academies Of Sciences Engineeri and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2021-11-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is the second leading cause of death among adults in the United States after heart disease. However, improvements in cancer treatment and earlier detection are leading to growing numbers of cancer survivors. As the number of cancer survivors grows, there is increased interest in how cancer and its treatments may affect a person's ability to work, whether the person has maintained employment throughout the treatment or is returning to work at a previous, current, or new place of employment. Cancer-related impairments and resulting functional limitations may or may not lead to disability as defined by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA), however, adults surviving cancer who are unable to work because of cancer-related impairments and functional limitations may apply for disability benefits from SSA. At the request of SSA, Diagnosing and Treating Adult Cancers and Associated Impairments provides background information on breast cancer, lung cancer, and selected other cancers to assist SSA in its review of the listing of impairments for disability assessments. This report addresses several specific topics, including determining the latest standards of care as well as new technologies for understanding disease processes, treatment modalities, and the effect of cancer on a person's health and functioning, in order to inform SSA's evaluation of disability claims for adults with cancer.

Book Immunological Approaches to the Diagnosis and Therapy of Breast Cancer

Download or read book Immunological Approaches to the Diagnosis and Therapy of Breast Cancer written by G.P. Talwar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once again we have gathered to discover and evaluate advances made in our ability to understand. diagnose and possibly treat breast cancer with the new reagents provided by monoclonal antibody techniques. In the last two years since our first International Workshop on Monoclonal Antibodies and Breast Cancer there has been an enormous surge in the number and quality of applications for these new reagents. Solid achievements have been made in identification and quantitation of estrogen and progesterone receptors. in histopathological diagnostic procedures. in serum diagnosis. and we are witnessing now the first attempts to treat breast cancer with immunoconjugates. Cytosolic estrogen receptors can now be quantitated with monoclonal antibodies. and also their cellular distribution can be directly assessed histologically. In addition. monoclonal antibodies to progesterone receptors have been generated that show promise in having similar uses as those to the estrogen receptor. In the field of diagnosis. the use of monoclonal antibodies has permitted the development of serological approaches for early diagnosis by identifying and measuring breast epithelial antigens in serum. and of histological approaches for establishing criteria for breast cancer dissemination and prognosis. With great expectations we are all following developments in the area of breast cancer treatment using conjugates of anti-breast epithelial monoclonal antibodies which are now confirming earlier reports in affecting breast tumor control. The recent creation of newer monoclonal antibodies and conjugates await experimentation and clinical trials to determine their value.

Download or read book Saving Women s Lives written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outlook for women with breast cancer has improved in recent years. Due to the combination of improved treatments and the benefits of mammography screening, breast cancer mortality has decreased steadily since 1989. Yet breast cancer remains a major problem, second only to lung cancer as a leading cause of death from cancer for women. To date, no means to prevent breast cancer has been discovered and experience has shown that treatments are most effective when a cancer is detected early, before it has spread to other tissues. These two facts suggest that the most effective way to continue reducing the death toll from breast cancer is improved early detection and diagnosis. Building on the 2001 report Mammography and Beyond, this new book not only examines ways to improve implementation and use of new and current breast cancer detection technologies but also evaluates the need to develop tools that identify women who would benefit most from early detection screening. Saving Women's Lives: Strategies for Improving Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis encourages more research that integrates the development, validation, and analysis of the types of technologies in clinical practice that promote improved risk identification techniques. In this way, methods and technologies that improve detection and diagnosis can be more effectively developed and implemented.

Book Endocrine Treatment of Breast Cancer

Download or read book Endocrine Treatment of Breast Cancer written by B. Henningsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in basic research has made it necessary to redetermine the possibility of classic endocrine therapy for the treatment of patients with breast cancer. Exemplary, close cooperation between biochemis try and animal and clinical research led to a truly interdisciplinary and international exchange of ideas and experience at a symposium held in autumn 1978 in Heidelberg. We owe our thanks to ICI-Pharma for the kind support of this sym posIUm. The participation of Charles Huggins in the meeting as honorary chairman signified to all participants the meaning of this joint endeavour. It was the same Charles Huggins who through experimental work laid the foundation stone for endocrine ther apy of prostate and breast cancer, and who applied his findings clinically. Thousands of patients owe to him relief from their suffering. He contributed greatly to the attempt to find and stabilize the endocrine therapy for breast cancer, for which we thank him sincerely. We hope that the following contributions will similarly serve the well-being of our patients.

Book New Approaches to Classification and Diagnostic Prediction of Breast Cancers

Download or read book New Approaches to Classification and Diagnostic Prediction of Breast Cancers written by Aleix Prat and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite many years of translational research in breast cancer, very few new biomarkers have been implemented for clinical use beyond estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2. The main reason is that many promising biomarkers are clinically validated but lack analytical and clinical utility. One explanation is that proper validation of the predictive ability of the biomarker in independent datasets, and with a pre-planned statistical analysis, is not always performed. Thus, there is a need to identify new biomarkers or new ways to subclassify breast cancer patients that are reproducible and easy to implement in the clinical setting but, more importantly, that improve patient’s outcomes.

Book Precision Medicine in Oncology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Angela Re
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release : 2019-01-21
  • ISBN : 2889457052
  • Pages : 163 pages

Download or read book Precision Medicine in Oncology written by Angela Re and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging precision medicine approach aims to tailor disease prevention and treatment to each patient on the basis of individual variability, environmental factors and lifestyle. Fundamental achievements in the last few decades have converged to offer nowadays the compelling opportunity to move towards this innovative approach: i) unprecedented improvements in disease modeling in silico, in vitro and in vivo; ii) acquisition of a wide range of biomedical information combined with the development of computational toolsets for flexible and integrative analyses of multi-assay datasets. Our deeper understanding of oncogenic mechanisms has finally begun to have a crucial impact on clinical decisions at several steps, from cancer prevention and diagnosis to therapeutic intervention. However, precision oncology still encounters several unresolved hurdles including tumour heterogeneity and recurrence as well as unexplained drug resistance and lack of effective ways to monitor response to therapeutic treatments. Notably, limitations in biomedical research regulation and governance represent additional debatable issues that need careful consideration.
