Book Treatises on Noah and David

Download or read book Treatises on Noah and David written by Saint Ambrose (Bishop of Milan) and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are three treatises in this book: one on Noah and two on King David. St. Ambrose offers an interpretation of the story of Noah (Genesis 6:5 through 9:29) and two essays on the story of King David's adultery with Bathsheba and his order for her husband to be killed (2 Samuel 11:2 through 12:25). His exegesis of the narrative of Noah and the Flood is allegorical. With regard to David and Bathsheba, Ambrose includes his own commentary on Psalm 51 (50 in the Septuagint), which he interprets as David's heartfelt repentance. Ambrose's overall purpose in the two treatises on David is to defend him as a righteous man"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These sermons by Ambrose of Milan (340–397 AD) provide a window into the preaching and scriptural exegesis of the legendary bishop, whose exposition of the Old Testament was instrumental in the conversion of Augustine of Hippo and in the development of Latin theology. In his treatise On Noah and his two Defenses for David, Ambrose borrows from influential Greek theologians, including Philo of Alexandria, Origen, and Didymus the Blind, while developing his own commentary on the exemplary patriarchs. Ambrose’s exegesis typifies both his attention to the letter of Scripture as well as his spiritual and allegorical reading of the holy figures or “saints” who lived before Christ. The first treatise presents Noah as a model just man, as Ambrose pairs the literal and the higher or spiritual meaning of the Genesis flood narrative to address topics ranging from the Genesis narrative to Stoic ethics to the Incarnation. In his defense of David to the emperor Theodosius, Ambrose ties David’s sin and repentance to his own close reading of Psalm 51(50), David’s plea for himself in his famous “Miserere.” While the authenticity of the third treatise included in the volume, the Second Apology of David, has long been challenged, recent scholarship suggests that it transmits Ambrose’s own preaching, which applies the lessons of David’s life to the situation of gentile unbelievers, Jews, and the church; even if it is the work of a later imitator, the Second Apology is a compelling and systematic treatment of the David’s sin and repentance as relevant to Christian morality and doctrine. The three treatises, previously unavailable in English translation, broaden our understanding of exegesis in the Latin West and our interpretation of Ambrose as preacher and exegete.

Book When the Great Abyss Opened

Download or read book When the Great Abyss Opened written by J. David Pleins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Noah's flood is one of the best-loved and most often retold biblical tales, the inspiration for numerous children's books and toys, novels, and even films. Whether as allusion, archetype, or literal presence--the American landscape is peppered with "recreations" of the ark--the story of Noah's animals and the ark resonates throughout American culture and the world. While most think of Noah's ark as a dramatic myth, others are consumed by the quest for geological and archeological proof that the flood really occurred. Persistent rumors of a large vessel on the mountain of Ararat in Turkey, for instance, have led many pilgrims and explorers over the centuries to visit that fabled peak. Recent finds suggest that there may have been a catastrophic flood on the shores of the Black Sea some 7,600 years ago. Is this then the reality behind the ancient tale of Noah? More to the point, why does it matter? What does the story of the Flood mean to us and why does it so stir the collective imagination? When the Great Abyss Opened examines the history of our attempts to understand the Flood, from medieval Jewish and Christian speculation about the physical details of the ark to contemporary efforts to link it to scientific findings. Unraveling the mythical dimensions of the parallel Mesopotamian flood stories and their deeper social and psychological significance, J. David Pleins also considers the story's positive uses in theology and moral instruction. Noah's tale, however, has also been invoked as a means of justifying exclusion, racism, and anti-homosexual views. Pro-slavery advocates, for example, used the story of Noah's Curse on Ham's son Canaan to rationalize the enslavement of Africans. Throughout this expansive and lively book, Pleins sheds new light on our continuing attempts to understand this ancient primal myth. Noah's Flood, he contends, offers a unique case study that illuminates the timeless and timely question of how fact and faith relate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish philosopher William Desmond is one of the most compelling and adventurous Christian thinkers of our time. The essays gathered here undertake a journey through the Bible with Desmond that ranges across biblical theology, philosophy of religion, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, political theory, and literary studies. Some of the essays examine the place of the Bible in Desmond's thought, considering his readings of the creation, the Abraham cycle, and the Beatitudes. Other essays bring Desmond's ideas to bear on broad questions that emerge from the Bible about philosophy and revelation, exegesis, theopoetics, eschatology, and tyranny. Still others bring Desmond into conversation with influential philosophers who engage (or conspicuously do not engage) the Bible, such as Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Tillich. Together, these essays show the rich possibilities of approaching the Bible with Desmond. All take their bearings from Desmond's "metaxological" approach, which does not seek to claim the final word, which attends to the text rather than simply imposing on it, and which allows for an ongoing dialogue. / Contributors: Ryan G. Book A Practical Discipleship Model That Fosters Spiritual Maturity

Download or read book A Practical Discipleship Model That Fosters Spiritual Maturity written by Owar Ojha Ojulu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus challenges us to live in him and continue living out the truth so that we claim our allegiance to Christ and live as disciples free from fear and from cultural customs that contradict the gospel message. This project has found that the lack of discipleship training among the Anyuwaa churches has resulted in a lack of understanding of what this ministry entails—teaching and making disciples. In addition, failure to embed elements of the Anyuwaa culture into the discipleship approach, and the persistence of certain elements of Anyuwaa life that run counter to gospel beliefs, has inflamed this crisis. Therefore, this book presents a call for the church to challenge the culture of syncretism and the fear of witchdoctors, to shift its paradigm and begin interpreting the gospel message, utilizing contextual elements but interpreting them through the lens of the gospel, calling people to embrace gospel values within their own cultural context. When we start interpreting strong cultural beliefs and traditions through the truth of the gospel, it is proof that we have come to the best discipleship approach, as we speak the truth of the gospel in the life our church and the hearts of our believers.

Book excerpt: About the Book View from the Ark is a groundbreaking book documenting the work of American researcher, David Fasold, and what is today believed to be the authentic site of Noah’s Ark. Fasold’s extensive scientific work was the basis for the Turkish government’s official and only declaration that Noah’s Ark has been found. The site lies in the mountains of Ararat, near the Turkish village of Dogubayazit. This area is now designated as a national park, and the ark site designated in the Turkish as “Nuhun Gemisi” is now a national treasure. Fasold was formerly with the United States Merchant Marines and had traveled the world. He later spent years operating a successful salvaging business in Florida exploring sunken ships and aircraft and was a close friend of the legendary Mel Fisher. Fasold brought his comprehensive nautical skills and understanding of fluid dynamics together with his knowledge of ancient cultures. He then used new technology to answer old questions. He used a molecular frequency generator, and later, ground-penetrating radar, a technology formerly used in projects by NASA. But it was his keen ability to put the pieces together into a coherent whole that brought his work to the attention of the world. Recognized by Turkey’s High Commission for Noah’s Ark, and under the direction of Dr. Salye Baraktutan of Ataturk University in Erzerum, Turkey, Fasold was the only non-Turkish person ever allowed to sit as a member of the commission.

Book Noah and His Book s

Download or read book Noah and His Book s written by Michael E. Stone and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a joint enterprise emerging from Michael Stone's senior seminar during the years 2003-2005. The seminar was devoted during those two years to a study of the traditions about a book or books of Noah and about Noah himself. The subject is enormous, as will be seen from the chronological and geographical range of the material assembled here. Two questions were defined that focused the discussion and, consequently, the material presented in this book. The first was to assess references to a Noah writing in the Second Temple period, including segments of existing works that scholars had in the past attributed to a Noah writing. As a corollary of this, the traditions of Noah in other Second Temple period works were studied, first, to gain insight into their character and, second, to see whether distinct enough traditions survived in those, often incidental, references to witness to the existence of a Noachic writing or writings"--Data View.
