Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Light This book is intended for students who have been through a first year's physics course and who are proceeding further with the study of light. It differs from other books on light by a more systematic treatment, also by dealing with the full s00pe of the subject and including the results of recent investigations. A good knowledge of elementary mathematics is assumed. The calculus is used, but I hope that the results Obtained by its aid will be intelligible to those who cannot follow the inter mediate steps, and in any case the greater part of the book is free from it. Book Electric Lighting

Download or read book Electric Lighting written by Hippolyte Fontaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Lighting: A Practical Treatise The electric light may be utilised in two ways, either by powerful foci illuminating or visible at great distances, or by less intense foci giving a light suitable to all kinds of night work. In the first case, nothing can equal the services rendered by electricity; in the second case, there is no longer com parison, the advantage being sometimes in favour of gas, oil, petroleum, &c., sometimes in favour of electricity. Thus for lighthouse service, fortifications, maritime service, shores, armies in campaign, the electric light is superior to all others; for show-rooms and manufactories, for open-air yards and large workshops, it is equally suitable; for domestic house hold illumination, and for certain trades carried on under low roofs, where there are numerous local subdivisions, gas, oil, or petroleum is preferable. In many establishments lighted by gas it has been advantageous to substitute electricity. In any case the number of applications would be very limited if we should continue to deprive ourselves of light, as it is the custom to do in the majority of manufactures, where during the night superintend ence is impossible, where the work produced during the night is much less than in the day. But, we hasten to add, this statu qua is not to be feared; some intelligent manufacturers - and their number is great - will replace their present system Of lighting by a system of lighting four or five times more intense, and they will not hesitate to admit that their products are better, in larger quantities, and consequently more economical; this example will not be lost, and to sustain competition their fellow-manufacturers will imitate them. The various obstructions which are occasionally offered to this privilege of light are fully treated of, and this considera tion naturally involves the right to the ease ment itself. The mode of using windows (a. Point which raises the question of alterations), is also distinctly treated of. Book The Theory of Light Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book The Theory of Light Vol 1 of 3 written by Richard C. Maclaurin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise on Physical Optics A special feature of the work is the careful comparison between theory and experiment at every stage. From our standpoint as to the aim of science, such a comparison appears all-important. The one difficulty in this matter has been to get access to the most accurate and recent experimental results; a difficulty arising entirely from the present isolation of the writer. At the ends of the earth there are no great libraries to which to refer, and the procuring of material from 'home' is tedious and uncertain. In dealing with experimental results I have deliberately refrained from entering upon descriptions of the methods of experiment as, in my judgment, quite out of place in such a work as this. Book Lighting by Acetylene

Download or read book Lighting by Acetylene written by Frederick Dye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lighting by Acetylene: A Treatise for the Practical Lighting Engineer, Containing Elementary Information and Details for Those About to Take Up the Work There is not the least doubt now about Acetylene Gas being commercially applicable to the many purposes for which artificial light is needed, particularly in places where coal gas and electricity are unavailable and only oil illumination otherwise possible. It can now be said quite positively that this gas is the light of the future for country houses and works, unless, of course, some thing better' and cheaper should be devised, which is very unlikely. Acetylene can now be made (given a proper gene rator) bya lad or any unskilled person, without super 'vision and with no risk; and it can be had at a cost that compares equally With coal gas at about 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet for a given candle-power or brilliancy of illumination. This is after allowing for wear and tear and interest on outlay. Should the present price of carbide go down, or should its gas-yielding qualities be increased, then acetylene will compare, of course, more favourably still. 'acetylene. The present cost of the gas, however, is no obstacle to its free adoption, for it is' in very few country places that coal gas costs less than 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet, and in many districts it exceeds this greatly. Probably most people would rather pay a little more for coal gas supplied by a gas company, as the trouble of making the acetylene, small as it is or should be, is still a trouble, and the outlay for the apparatus has to be considered. Therefore acetylene is unlikely to displace coal gas where the latter exists but it is already a possible and strong rival to coal gas if it should be a question of which gas plant shall be laid down to light a village. For single-residence plants acetylene has nothing to fear from coal' gas, neither need it fear much from gasoline, which is dirty, ill - smelling and expensive in compari son with the later illuminant. Gasoline is also more dangerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Physics, Designed for Use as a Textbook of General Physics When a man exerts his muscles in moving a body or in pushing or pulling a body which he cannot move, he is con scious of the exertion of force. In many cases, as when he bends a spring or sustains a weight, he interprets his sensa tion by saying, that the body against which he acts exerts a force in the opposite direction to the one which he is exerting and of equal magnitude. He further believes that the body, when in the same position or condition, is still exerting a force, even though he does not directly perceive the counter acting force. He thus feels willing to use bodies in certain conditions or positions as the means by which forces may be exerted. When a body is sustained in the air by the hand, the force exerted by the hand, as is shown by universal experience, is directed vertically upwards. The force which the body is assumed to exert in the opposite direction or vertically down wards, is called its weight. Universal experience has shown that the weight of a body depends on its size and on the material of which it is composed. If different bodies com posed of the same material and of equal volume are tested by A the hand, or.in any other way, it is found that their weights are equal. Two of these bodies will have the same weight as a body of the same material and of a volume double that of either one of them. By suitable. Combinations of equal weights, any one of which is selected as a unit, a scale of forces can be constructed.
