Book A Treatise on Photographic Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Photographic Optics Classic Reprint written by Reginald Sorrè Cole and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Photographic Optics The object of this treatise is to provide an account of the principles of Optics, so far as they apply to Photography, in a form which is of scientific value, while not of too abstruse a nature to place it beyond the reach of all but the professional mathematician or physicist. I have attempted to steer a middle course between giving too much mathematics and giving none at all; the former course would restrict the book to a few, while the latter would deprive it of all real value. To make the mathematics as intelligible as possible, most of the results have been illustrated by worked numerical examples, and symbolical results have been expressed in words. The chapter on aberration necessarily contains a certain amount of algebraical formulae, too many perhaps for many readers, but care has been taken to explain clearly, by means of diagrams, the principles which underlie the formulae. I have to thank Captain Abney for giving me permission to use many of his diagrams, Major Darwin for allowing me to quote from his paper on lens testing at Kew Observatory, and the publishers of Photography Annual for allowing me to copy the tables contained in 127, 151, and 156;also I owe it to the kindness of the Sandell Plate Company that I am able to give an example of a test film for the speed of plates. My thanks are also due to the Rev. W. F. H. Curtis, who first suggested to me to write, and has given me many valuable suggestions and much help. Download or read book A Treatise on Physical Optics Classic Reprint written by A. B. Basset and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Physical Optics Those who are acquainted with the Mathematical Theories of Hydrodynamics, Sound and Elasticity on the one hand, and of Electricity and Light on the other, cannot fail to have been struck with the difference, which exists between the two classes of subjects. In the former class, certain equations are obtained, which approximately, though not quite accurately, specify in a mathematical form, the physical state of fluids and solids as they exist in Nature; and the subsequent investigation of these branches of Science, is thereby in great measure reduced to a question of mathematics. As soon as the fundamental equations are established, the subject is brought within the dominion of mathematical analysis, and mathematicians are enabled to exercise their ingenuity and analytical skill, in elaborating and developing the results which flow from them. Book A Short Elementary Treatise on Experimental and Mathematical Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Elementary Treatise on Experimental and Mathematical Optics Classic Reprint written by Rev Baden Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Elementary Treatise on Experimental and Mathematical Optics In the present instance, the author's object is to facili tate the tudy of Elementary Optics, with immediate refer ence to the wants of the student, circumstanced as he at present is in the University of Oxford. To this particular case none of the existing treatises appear completely adapted; and though such is the discouragement under which physical studies labour in this place, that the mere character of the treatises produced on these branches, can, perhaps, very little affect their actual progress; yet that no obstacle may remain which is capable of being removed, he considers it worth while to try to remedy the complaints against existing works, whether as too large and too difficult on the one hand, or as incomplete and obscure on the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Optics: Containing All the Requisite Propositions Carried to First Approximations; With the Construction of Optical Instruments, for the Use of Junior University Students In the present First Part of Geometrical Optics, the theory of optical instruments will be discussed, by taking the propositions to first approximations only; and in the Second Part the proposi tions will be discussed to second approximations, and the more corrected forms of some of the instruments treated of. This method involves the advantages of a more elementary treatise in the First Part, and a higher one in combining the two Parts. Download or read book The Theory of Light Vol 1 of 3 written by Richard C. Maclaurin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise on Physical Optics A special feature of the work is the careful comparison between theory and experiment at every stage. From our standpoint as to the aim of science, such a comparison appears all-important. The one difficulty in this matter has been to get access to the most accurate and recent experimental results; a difficulty arising entirely from the present isolation of the writer. At the ends of the earth there are no great libraries to which to refer, and the procuring of material from 'home' is tedious and uncertain. In dealing with experimental results I have deliberately refrained from entering upon descriptions of the methods of experiment as, in my judgment, quite out of place in such a work as this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Light This book is intended for students who have been through a first year's physics course and who are proceeding further with the study of light. It differs from other books on light by a more systematic treatment, also by dealing with the full s00pe of the subject and including the results of recent investigations. A good knowledge of elementary mathematics is assumed. The calculus is used, but I hope that the results Obtained by its aid will be intelligible to those who cannot follow the inter mediate steps, and in any case the greater part of the book is free from it. Of the 328 figures more than '270 have been specially drawn for the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Optics Vol 2 written by Richard Potter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Optics, Vol. 2: Containing the Higher Propositions, With Their Applications to the More Perfect Forms of Instruments The modern history of Optical Science may be considered to commence with the discovery of the law of the refraction of light, by Snellius. TO Huygens we are indebted for the discussion of the aberration of pencils refracted by spherical surfaces of media, and he applied his investigations to the construction of his double eye-piece, which remains in high estimation to the present day. By good fortune he secured in it the condition required for achromatism, in addition to the advantages of reduced spherical aberration, to which his views were directed, although the conditions for achromatism in eye-pieces were not discovered until long afterwards. Sir Isaac Newton having discovered the unequal refrangibility of the differently coloured rays of the spectrum, shewed the great effect of the chromatic dispersion in producing indistinctness of the optical images produced by lenses.
