Download or read book Hippocrates Woman written by Helen King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hippocrates' Woman demonstrates the role of Hippocratic ideas about the female body in the subsequent history of western gynaecology. It examines these ideas not only in the social and cultural context in which they were first produced, but also the ways in which writers up to the Victorian period have appealed to the material in support of their own theories. Among the conflicting tange of images of women given in the Hippocratic corpus existed one tradition of the female body which says it is radically unlike the male body, behaving in different ways and requiring a different set of therapies. This book sets this model within the context of Greek mythology, especially the myth of Pandora and her difference from men, to explore the image of the body as something to be read. Hippocrates' Woman presents an arresting study of the origins of gynaecology, an exploration of how the interior workings of the female body were understood and the influence of Hippocrates' theories on the gynaecology of subsequent ages.
Download or read book Treatise on the Diseases of Women written by Lydia Estes Pinkham and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following book is an advertorial written for Lydia Pinkham's Remedies—a herbal-alcoholic "women's tonic" for menstrual and menopausal problems. Interestingly enough, though medical experts dismissed it as a quack remedy, the products are still on sale today in a modified form. This advertorial is one part of the aggressive marketing technique that her brand is known for. Long, promotional copy would dramatize "women's weakness", "hysteria" and other themes commonly referenced at the time. Pinkham urged women to write to her personally, and she would maintain the correspondence in order to expose the customer to more persuasive claims for the remedy.

This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few specialties have a longer or richer eponymous background than obstetrics and gynaecology. Eponyms add a human side to an increasingly technical profession and represent the historic tradition and language of the speciality. This collection aims to perpetuate the names and contributions of pioneers and offer introductory profiles to the founders in whose steps we follow. This third edition includes 26 new entries, as well as expanded detail, illustration and quotation for existing entries. Biographical data and historical and medical context are discussed for each of the 391 names, with reference to 34 countries, reflecting the field's far reaching origins. More than 1700 original references feature, alongside an extensive bibliography of more than 2500 linked references to assist readers searching for more detailed information. This is a volume for physicians, midwives, medical historians, medical ethicists and all those interested in the history and evolution of obstetrical and gynaecological treatment.
