Download or read book Complex Algebraic Curves written by Frances Clare Kirwan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This development of the theory of complex algebraic curves was one of the peaks of nineteenth century mathematics. They have many fascinating properties and arise in various areas of mathematics, from number theory to theoretical physics, and are the subject of much research. By using only the basic techniques acquired in most undergraduate courses in mathematics, Dr. Kirwan introduces the theory, observes the algebraic and topological properties of complex algebraic curves, and shows how they are related to complex analysis.

Book Classical Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Classical Algebraic Geometry written by Igor V. Dolgachev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic geometry has benefited enormously from the powerful general machinery developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. The cost has been that much of the research of previous generations is in a language unintelligible to modern workers, in particular, the rich legacy of classical algebraic geometry, such as plane algebraic curves of low degree, special algebraic surfaces, theta functions, Cremona transformations, the theory of apolarity and the geometry of lines in projective spaces. The author's contemporary approach makes this legacy accessible to modern algebraic geometers and to others who are interested in applying classical results. The vast bibliography of over 600 references is complemented by an array of exercises that extend or exemplify results given in the book.

Book Algebraic Curves

Download or read book Algebraic Curves written by William Fulton and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of these notes is to develop the theory of algebraic curves from the viewpoint of modern algebraic geometry, but without excessive prerequisites. We have assumed that the reader is familiar with some basic properties of rings, ideals and polynomials, such as is often covered in a one-semester course in modern algebra; additional commutative algebra is developed in later sections.

Book Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic Curves

Download or read book Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic Curves written by Qing Liu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a general introduction to the theory of schemes, followed by applications to arithmetic surfaces and to the theory of reduction of algebraic curves. The first part introduces basic objects such as schemes, morphisms, base change, local properties (normality, regularity, Zariski's Main Theorem). This is followed by the more global aspect: coherent sheaves and a finiteness theorem for their cohomology groups. Then follows a chapter on sheaves of differentials, dualizing sheaves, and Grothendieck's duality theory. The first part ends with the theorem of Riemann-Roch and its application to the study of smooth projective curves over a field. Singular curves are treated through a detailed study of the Picard group. The second part starts with blowing-ups and desingularisation (embedded or not) of fibered surfaces over a Dedekind ring that leads on to intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. Castelnuovo's criterion is proved and also the existence of the minimal regular model. This leads to the study of reduction of algebraic curves. The case of elliptic curves is studied in detail. The book concludes with the funadmental theorem of stable reduction of Deligne-Mumford. The book is essentially self-contained, including the necessary material on commutative algebra. The prerequisites are therefore few, and the book should suit a graduate student. It contains many examples and nearly 600 exercises.

Book Plane Algebraic Curves

Download or read book Plane Algebraic Curves written by Gerd Fischer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an excellent introduction to algebraic geometry, which assumes only standard undergraduate mathematical topics: complex analysis, rings and fields, and topology. Reading this book will help establish the geometric intuition that lies behind the more advanced ideas and techniques used in the study of higher-dimensional varieties.

Book The Geometry of Schemes

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Eisenbud
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-04-06
  • ISBN : 0387226397
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Geometry of Schemes written by David Eisenbud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.

Download or read book Intersection Theory written by W. Fulton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the ancient origins of algebraic geometry in the solution of polynomial equations, through the triumphs of algebraic geometry during the last two cen turies, intersection theory has played a central role. Since its role in founda tional crises has been no less prominent, the lack of a complete modern treatise on intersection theory has been something of an embarrassment. The aim of this book is to develop the foundations of intersection theory, and to indicate the range of classical and modern applications. Although a comprehensive his tory of this vast subject is not attempted, we have tried to point out some of the striking early appearances of the ideas of intersection theory. Recent improvements in our understanding not only yield a stronger and more useful theory than previously available, but also make it possible to devel op the subject from the beginning with fewer prerequisites from algebra and algebraic geometry. It is hoped that the basic text can be read by one equipped with a first course in algebraic geometry, with occasional use of the two appen dices. Some of the examples, and a few of the later sections, require more spe cialized knowledge. The text is designed so that one who understands the con structions and grants the main theorems of the first six chapters can read other chapters separately. Frequent parenthetical references to previous sections are included for such readers. The summaries which begin each chapter should fa cilitate use as a reference.
