Book Methods of Treatment of Unstable Ground

Download or read book Methods of Treatment of Unstable Ground written by F G Bell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of Treatment of Unstable Ground focuses on the methods of treatment that have been adopted by engineers in their attempts to make unstable ground usable. These methods are meant to stabilize ground, either temporarily as in ground-water lowering or freezing techniques, or permanently as in grouting. This book is comprised of 11 chapters. The first of which reviews some of the modern techniques in addressing problems caused by unstable ground, including those caused by water in excavations, instability of natural or excavated slopes, the settlement of structures on soft or loose soils, and subsidence due to extraction of minerals from the ground. These techniques range from ground-water lowering to the use of an impermeable barrier around the excavation to prevent inflow and at the same time maintain the surrounding water table at its normal level. Attention then turns to the use of electro-osmosis and electrochemical stabilization in ground engineering; control of groundwater by excluding it through grouting; and fundamental conditions governing the penetration of grouts. The remaining chapters explore grout selection based on engineering performance; ground conditions in mining areas; clay grouting and alluvial grouting; and ground freezing. Finally, the use of cement to stabilize soil and of vibroflotation to improve poor ground below foundations of structures is described. This book should prove useful to engineers engaged in ground engineering.

Book Finding Solid Ground Overcoming Obstacles in Trauma Treatment

Download or read book Finding Solid Ground Overcoming Obstacles in Trauma Treatment written by Bethany L. Brand and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of the relationships between trauma-related disorders and dissociation, describe the prevalence and presentations of dissociation among trauma survivors, and discuss the challenges that contribute to trauma-related disorders (TRD) and dissociative disorders (DDs) being "hidden in plain sight". Please note that throughout this book we use the term "trauma-related disorders" (TRD) as an overarching term that includes those who have a diagnosable trauma-related DD, which means that dissociation is typically severe, frequent, and disabling. Thus, our use of TRD in this book includes individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), acute stress disorder, the dissociative subtype of PTSD (DPTSD), and persons with trauma-related DDs. Since many authors consider borderline personality disorder a TRD due to the frequent occurrence of trauma, childhood maltreatment, and attachment problems in this population, we include those with trauma histories in our use of TRD as well"--

Book The Pneumatic Flow Mixing Method

Download or read book The Pneumatic Flow Mixing Method written by Masaki Kitazume and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pneumatic flow mixing method was developed to stabilize dredged soil and surplus soil for promoting their beneficial use in 1999. The pneumatic flow mixing method is a new type of the ex-situ cement stabilization techniques, in which dredged soil and surplus soil is mixed with a relatively small amount of chemical binder without any mixing paddles and blades in a pipeline. When a relatively large amount of compressed air is injected into the pipeline, soil can be separated into small blocks. When binder is injected into the pipeline, the soil block and binder are thoroughly mixed by means of turbulent flow generated in the soil block during transporting. As this method has many benefits − rapid and large scale execution can be conducted with low cost − it has been applied to many land reclamation projects, backfilling behind earth retaining wall projects and shallow stabilization projects using dredged soils and surplus soils. The Pneumatic Flow Mixing Method is a useful reference tool for engineers and researchers involved in admixture stabilization technology everywhere, regardless of local soil conditions and a variety in applications.

Book Emerging Technologies in Hazardous Waste Management 8

Download or read book Emerging Technologies in Hazardous Waste Management 8 written by D. William Tedder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several long-term trends in technology evolution have become apparent since these symposia began in 1989. Earlier presenters more frequently discussed treatment methods involving harsh and extensive human intervention. As the symposia have continued, the number of presentations describing extremely harsh and expensive treatment technologies have gradually been supplanted by more subtle and gentler methods. Such methods include subsurface-engineered barriers, phytoremediation, and bioremediation. Nineteen manuscripts were selected for inclusion in this volume, based upon peer review, scientific merit, the editors' perceptions of lasting value or innovative features, and the general applicability of either the technology itself or the scientific methods and scholarly details provided by the authors. General topics include: soil treatment, groundwater treatment, and radioactive waste treatment.
