Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joan Burstyn's fourth book of poems, Treasures Stored for Winter, draws the reader into the author's life from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. At times, personal and political events combine-as happens on the evening of June 30, 1982, when the last state legislature rejected the Equal Rights Amendment. At that moment, Burstyn stood with other women around a pond in South Orange, New Jersey, as they raised their voices in protest as remembered in "Waiting to Rise Again." I felt braided into others' lives, mingled beyond extrication. We stood together in darkness, each with candle flooding the pond with light, hope filling our eyes even as the Equal Rights Amendment was snuffed out, swiftly as a candle's flame ... In this collection, Burstyn makes clear that life demands both awe and optimism from us. "My first dip into Treasures Stored for Winter brings up a small package, "After Snow"; it bursts open with imagery so vibrant and glowing that I can't help myself. I dip again, bring out "While the House Sleeps"; with its commanding imagery metaphorically I become "... a matador/swirling my red cloak/before the bull, prodding it with my words." -Joanna Chrzanowski, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor; chair, English Department, Jefferson College

Download or read book A Priceless Treasure written by Marie Crowley and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1872 three Sisters of St Joseph and one lay woman arrived at The Vale, a village near Bathurst, New South Wales. They had come from Adelaide in response to an invitation from the Catholic bishop of Bathurst to establish a foundation of the newly founded Congregation in his diocese--the first Josephite foundation in New South Wales. Sister Teresa McDonald was the leader or Superior of the founding community. Born in Scotland in 1838, she had come to Australia with her parents finally settling in Adelaide. A friend of both Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop, she joined the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867. This book explores her early life and her time as a Sister of St Joseph in Adelaide where she served as the first Provincial of the Congregation in South Australia. It also gives particular attention to Teresa's short years at The Vale, her struggle with ill health and her death in January 1876.
