Book Mamma Andersson Jockum Nordstrom Who is sleeping on my pillow

Download or read book Mamma Andersson Jockum Nordstrom Who is sleeping on my pillow written by and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published on the occasion of the 2010 exhibition at David Zwirner in New York, Who is sleeping on my pillow marked the first time Andersson and Nordstrom presented their work in concurrent solo shows. The book showcases their work from the late 1980s to 2010 in over two hundred full-color plates, as well as numerous reproductions of family snapshots and source material. The Swedish artist couple Mamma Andersson and Jockum Nordstrom have been at the forefront of contemporary figurative art since the late 1980s. Updating Vuillard for a post-Hitchcock age, Andersson paints beguilingly eerie interiors and landscapes. Nordstrom’s detailed collages, watercolors, and drawings occupy a more folkloric realm peopled by historical and contemporary characters enacting sexual and social roles across broad narrative panoramas. Included in Who is sleeping on my pillow are texts by Paolo Colombo and Anders Kruger, a poem by Stig Claesson, and an interview with Nordstrom by Marcel Dzama. As Colombo notes in his accompanying essay, “The miracle is that Jockum and Mamma spent more than half of their life together, and that over the years their complicity has guided them into the artists they are, each the complement and the best sounding board for the other.” The publication was reissued to coincide with Nordstrom’s 2014 exhibition, For the insects and the hounds, at David Zwirner in London, and Andersson’s 2015 presentation, Behind the Curtain, at the gallery in New York.

Download or read book Murrina Vasa written by Dario Del Bufalo and published by L'Erma Di Bretschneider. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Pliny who provided the longest and most detailed description of MURRINA VASA: Their size never exceeds that of a small table, and, in thickness, they rarely are so thick as the drinking cups mentioned above. Their brightness has no intensity, they are shiny rather than brilliant. But what is really valuable is the variety of colours, since their veins repeatedly turn purple, to snow-white and a third shade between the two, just as when the purple gets inflamed in a change of colour or the milk-white goes red. Some people appreciate above all their outlines and certain reflections in the colours, like those observed in the rainbow. Other people, on the other hand, like thicker veins - any transparency or lack of colour is considered an imperfection - as well as grains and warts that, just as in the human body, are not prominent, but are mostly flat. A certain worth can also ascribed to their smell. -(Naturalis Historia 37.21-2)

With vivid detail and anecdotes, John Zubrzycki charts the rise of the Nizams to fabulous wealth and prominence in the detritus of the Mughal empire, giving a rich and vibrant portrait of a realm soaked in blood and intrigue. Above all he describes the strange and sometimes tragic life of Mukarram Jah, His Exalted Highness, the last Nizam, the man who left behind the diamonds of Golconda and the palaces of Hyderabad to drive bulldozers in the Australian bush. Meticulously researched, The Last Nizam adds a crucial chapter to the history of India, capturing the conspiracies and machinations that kept the Nizams in the news while simultaneously deepening their legend.

Book Horse of Karbala

Download or read book Horse of Karbala written by D. Pinault and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horse of Karbala is a study of Muharram rituals and interfaith relations in three locations in India: Ladakh, Darjeeling, and Hyderabad. These rituals commemorate an event of vital importance to Shia Muslims: the seventh-century death of the Imam Husain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the battlefield of Karbala in Iraq. Pinault examines three different forms of ritual commemoration of Husain's death - poetry-recital and self-flagellation in Hyderabad; stick-fighting in Darjeeling; and the 'Horse of Karbala' procession, in which a stallion representing the mount ridden in battle by Husain is made the center of a public parade in Ladakh and other Indian localities. The book looks at how publicly staged rituals serve to mediate communal relations: in Hyderabad and Darjeeling, between Muslim and Hindu populations; in Ladakh, between Muslims and Buddhists. Attention is also given to controversies within Muslim communities over issues related to Muharram such as the belief in intercession by the Karbala Martyrs on behalf of individual believers.
