Book A Modern Legal History of Treasure

Download or read book A Modern Legal History of Treasure written by N.M. Dawson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines treasure law and practice from the rise of the new science of archaeology in the early Victorian period to the present day. Drawing on largely-unexamined state records and other archives, the book covers several legal jurisdictions: England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland pre- and post-independence, and post-partition Northern Ireland. From the Mold gold cape (1833) to the Broighter hoard (1896), from Sutton Hoo (1939) to the Galloway hoard (2014), the law of treasure trove, and the Treasure Act 1996, are considered through the prism of notable archaeological discoveries, and from the perspectives of finders, landowners, archaeologists, museum professionals, collectors, the state, and the public. Literally and metaphorically, treasure law is revealed as a ground-breaking chapter in the history of the legal protection of cultural property and cultural heritage in Britain and Ireland.

Book From Ireland Coming

  • Author : Colum Hourihane

Download or read book From Ireland Coming written by Colum Hourihane and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lying at Europe's remote western edge, Ireland long has been seen as having an artistic heritage that owes little to influences beyond its borders. This publication, the first to focus on Irish art from the eighth century AD to the end of the sixteenth century, challenges the idea that the best-known Irish monuments of that period-the high crosses, the Book of Kells, the Tara Brooch, the round towers-reflect isolated, insular traditions. Seventeen essays examine the iconography, history, and structure of these familiar works, as well as a number of previously unpublished pieces, and demonstrate that they do have a place in the main currents of European art. While this book reveals unexpected links between Ireland, Late-Antique Italy, the Byzantine Empire, and the Anglo-Saxons, its center is always the artistic culture of Ireland itself. It includes new research on the Sheela-na-gigs, often thought to be merely erotic sculptures; on the larger cultural meanings of the Tuam Market Cross and its nineteenth-century re-erection; and on late-medieval Irish stone crosses and metalwork. The emphasis on later monuments makes this one of the first volumes to deal with Irish art after the Norman invasion. The contributors are Cormac Bourke, Mildred Budny, Tessa Garton, Peter Harbison, Jane Hawkes, Colum Hourihane, Catherine E. Karkov, Heather King, Susanne McNab, Raghnall Floinn, Emmanuelle Pirotte, Roger Stalley, Kees Veelenturf, Dorothy Hoogland Verkerk, Niamh Whitfield, Maggie McEnchroe Williams, and Susan Youngs.

Book Mother of God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Miri Rubin
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2009-02-26
  • ISBN : 0141912642
  • Pages : 576 pages

Download or read book Mother of God written by Miri Rubin and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary, the mother of Jesus, is one of the most powerful, influential and complex of all religious figures. The focus for women, the inspiration of faith, the subject of innumerable paintings, sculptures, pieces of music and churches, Mary is so entangled in our world that it is impossible to conceive of the history of Western culture and religion without her. Miri Rubin's Mother of God is a major work of cultural imagination. Mary's role in the Gospels is a relatively minor one, and yet in the centuries during which Christianity established itself she emerged as a powerful, strange and ungovernable force, endlessly remade and reimagined by wave after wave of devotees, ultimately becoming 'a sort of God', in ways that have always made some Christians uneasy. Whether talking about the vast public festivals celebrating Mary that sweep up entire communities or the intense private agony of individual devotion, Rubin's book is a triumph of sympathy and intelligence. Throughout Christianity's journey from mysterious origins to global religion, the Mother of God has been a profound presence in countless lives - Mother of God is the story of that presence and a book that raises profound questions about the human experience.

Book The Unique Properties of 4D Spiral Spacetime Toryx

Download or read book The Unique Properties of 4D Spiral Spacetime Toryx written by Vladimir Ginzburg and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the title of this book, the toryx is a four-dimensional (4D) spiral spacetime. It means its properties are described by three space plus one time parameters. Part 1 of this book presents properties of toryces in abstract mathematical terms. Part 2 shows several applications of toryces for mathematical modeling of properties of entities of both micro- and macro-worlds. This book further confirms a main proposition of the author's Universal Space Theory (UST) that the toryx has all attributes required to be a prime element of nature.

Book The 4D Spiral Spacetimes Toryx Helyx Prime Elements of the Multiverse

Download or read book The 4D Spiral Spacetimes Toryx Helyx Prime Elements of the Multiverse written by Vladimir Ginzburg and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes abstract and applied mathematics of the unique properties of 4D spiral spacetimes called toryx and helyx. There is a good reason for studying the mathematics of these two spacetimes. Their unique properties provide them with a capability to be the prime elements of nature. In that capacity their potential role in nature would be comparable with a role of the DNA double helyces discovered by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953. The DNA double helyces contain genetic codes defining the properties of both organic entities and living organisms, whereas both toryx and helyx contain generic codes defining the properties of matter and radiation entities of the Universe. Also similar are the locations of these codes. The genetic codes of DNA are located inside of cells of all organic entities and living organisms, whereas the generic codes of toryces and helyces reside inside of all elementary matter and radiation particles, the building blocks of the Universe.
