Book In the Sanctuary of Women

Download or read book In the Sanctuary of Women written by Jan L. Richardson and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come spend some time in the sanctuary of women, an often-ignored space in Jewish and Christian history. This devotional book for women highlights six women from around the world and across the centuries, inviting us to discover what their lives tell us about God. Jan Richardson, a gifted poet, artist, and author, believes it is essential for women to listen to one another's wisdom and bring the fullness of their lives, with all the wonders and messiness, into their prayer life. In the Sanctuary of Women gathers together these women from scripture and history: Eve Brigid of Kildare The desert mothers Hildegard of Bingen Harriet Powers The Woman of the Song of Songs Each chapter becomes its own sanctuary, with one of the women serving as a companion as you contemplate the theme that her life offers. Throughout the readings Richardson weaves her own stories, poetry, prayers, and blessings. Midway through each chapter, a section called "The Secret Room" gives you a chance to pause and reflect on unexpected insights. Reading the book daily will carry you through six months, or you can dip into the readings as you wish. An invitation into reflection and prayer alone or in the company of others, In the Sanctuary of Women is a book to treasure and to share with the women and the men in your life.

Book The Inner Sanctuary an Exposition of John 13 17

Download or read book The Inner Sanctuary an Exposition of John 13 17 written by Charles Ross and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 1967 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of his betrayal, Jesus Christ revealed the deepest concerns of his heart to his disciples. The hours he spent that evening, with his disciples in the upper room, left an indelible impression on the apostle John. Thereafter he never ceased to be amazed by the fact that 'our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ'. Nowhere in Scripture is this privilege more fully expounded that in Chapters 13 to 17 of John's Gospel. John's record of Jesus' words and actions takes us into the inner sanctuary of the Christian's relationship to God. We hear of the mystery of the Trinity, the reality of union with Christ, and the glory which belongs to the Son. Here, in the time of crisis, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ shines forth in all its glory. In these pages, Charles Ross (who belonged to the same school of Scottish evangelicals as Robert Murray M'Cheyne and the Bonars) shows how all of God's wisdom and knowledge are revealed in Jesus Christ.

Book Mecca and Eden

  • Author : Brannon Wheeler
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2006-07
  • ISBN : 0226888045
  • Pages : 347 pages

Download or read book Mecca and Eden written by Brannon Wheeler and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century philologist and Biblical critic William Robertson Smith famously concluded that the sacred status of holy places derives not from their intrinsic nature but from their social character. Building upon this insight, Mecca and Eden uses Islamic exegetical and legal texts to analyze the rituals and objects associated with the sanctuary at Mecca. Integrating Islamic examples into the comparative study of religion, Brannon Wheeler shows how the treatment of rituals, relics, and territory is related to the more general mythological depiction of the origins of Islamic civilization. Along the way, Wheeler considers the contrast between Mecca and Eden in Muslim rituals, the dispersal and collection of relics of the prophet Muhammad, their relationship to the sanctuary at Mecca, and long tombs associated with the gigantic size of certain prophets mentioned in the Quran. Mecca and Eden succeeds, as few books have done, in making Islamic sources available to the broader study of religion.

Book excerpt: In 1797 the bloodiest mutiny ever suffered by the Royal Navy took place on the British frigate HMS Hermione off the coast of Puerto Rico. Jonathan Robbins, a reputed American sailor who had been impressed into service, made his way to American shores. President John Adams bowed to Britain’s request for his extradition. Convicted of murder and piracy by a court-martial in Jamaica, Robbins was hanged. Adams’s catastrophic miscalculation ignited a political firestorm, only to be fanned by Robbins’s failure to receive his constitutional rights of due process and trial by jury by an American court. American Sanctuary brilliantly lays out in riveting detail the story of how the Robbins affair, amid the turbulent presidential campaign of 1800, inflamed the new nation and set in motion a constitutional crisis, resulting in Adams’s defeat and Thomas Jefferson’s election as the third president of the United States. Robbins’s martyrdom led directly to the country’s historic decision to grant political asylum to foreign refugees—a major achievement in fulfilling the promise of American independence.

Sanctuary was nominated by Christianity Today as best spirituality book of 2005. "I have never read a more direct and moving set of meditations. Becca Stevens has the most extraordinary gift for finding the ineffable in our ordinary old real world, and for making us feel it, too." -Lee Smith, author of The Last Girls "Becca Stevens' meditations imagine an entire world and our part in it, as a place where God dwells. Instead of the tired effort of searching for God, she reminds us, like Francis Thompson's 'Hound of Heaven,' that God can find us wherever we are." -Charles Strobel, Founding Director, Campus for Human Development "Becca Stevens is my kind of preacher woman. Her ministry extends far beyond the walls of St. Augustine's Chapel. Her words bring to life the miracles that abound in the mundane." -Marshall Chapman, author of Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller "Sanctuary can be found in Becca Stevens's elegant, exquisite, earnest pages." -Alice Randall, author of The Wind Done Gone Becca Stevens is an Episcopal priest at St. Augustine's Chapel on the Vanderbilt University campus. She is the founder of Magdalene, a residential community for women with a criminal history of prostitution and drug abuse, and the author of Hither & Yon: A Travel Guide for the Spiritual Journey, coming in September 2007. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treasure in a Box: A Guide to the Icons of St. Andrew is a narrative companion to the largest body of Pokrovsky icons in North America, located at St. Andrew Antiochian Orthodox Church in Lexington, Kentucky. The late Ksenia Mihailovna Pokrovskaya was a world-renowned master iconographer who immigrated to the United States from Moscow in 1991, six months before the collapse of the Soviet Union. During the 1960s, she gave up a promising career as a biophysicist at Moscow University to become a leader of a clandestine movement that revived the tradition of icon painting in her homeland, where it was forbidden by law. Over the past two decades the curious as well as the faithful have come to survey the interior of an unremarkable shoebox structure that is St. Andrew Orthodox Church. The universal response has been one of awe when standing before this visual gospel that portrays the history of salvation from the conception of the Virgin Mary to the evangelistic preaching of the apostles. Treasure in a Box: A Guide to the Icons of St. Andrew provides an up close look at these symbols of faith.
