Book Treading a Delicate Tightrope

Download or read book Treading a Delicate Tightrope written by Mike Burton and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mike Burton became the principal of All Saints College in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, little did he know about the journey on which he was embarking. Very soon after taking up the position, Mike realised that the vision of the founding organisation was becoming irrelevant as education and politics converged, reaching a crisis point in the second half of the 1980s. Mike found himself walking the tightrope between the expectations of the funders on the one hand and those of the students and community on the other. Matters reached a tipping point and Mike had to make a decision. As 'Comrade Mike' he elected that the interests of the students and the community take precedence. Mike chose education AND liberation. Mike Burton's Tightrope is a gripping, personal account that transports the reader back to the liberation struggle of the 1980s and the educational issues that informed policy in the nascent democracy. The book will be of particular interest to those involved in education at the time as well anybody who observed or was engaged during that turbulent period of change.

Book Birth Death and a Tractor

Download or read book Birth Death and a Tractor written by Kelly Payson-Roopchand and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there were no stone walls. For the fiercely idealistic Yankee homesteader, a small family farm was worth fighting for, and the rocky soil yielded far more than walls. Cleared and plowed, it fed a family and provided a living. Oxen gave way to horses, horses to tractors, and still the farm persisted and the family persevered, each generation overcoming the challenges of their day. Two hundred years later, the farm, ever generous in its rewards, has not changed; but society has shifted, forgetting its connection to the land that nourishes us. It is time we remembered. Birth, Death and a Tractor is the story of a small family farm in Somerville, Maine, from its settling in the early 1800s to its perilous transfer to a new farm family in 2008. Chronicling the history of seven generations, it is a reminder of the role small farms have played in our national and family histories, and a challenge to find innovative ways to re-connect our communities to this rich but threatened resource.

Book excerpt: It has been increasingly impossible to think about our changing world without coming across the term 'geopolitics'. In the wake of the invasion and occupation of Iraq by the United States, United Kingdom, and others, geopolitics has been offered as an explanation for the occupation's failure to reinvent the Iraqi state and as a blueprint for future action. But what is 'geopolitics'? Drawing both on academic and political material, this book introduces readers to the concept of geopolitics, from the first usage of the term to its more recent reconceptualisations. The concept of geopolitics is introduced through four thematic sections - Imperial Geopolitics, Cold War Geopolitics, Geopolitics after the Cold War and Reconceptualising Geopolitics. Each section includes key writings from a range of diverse and leading authors such as Said, Agnew, Dalby, O Tuathail, Gregory, Barnett and Kaplan, and is accompanied by a critical introduction by the editors to guide the reader through the material. This Reader establishes the foundations of geopolitics while also introducing readers to the continuing significance of the concept in the 21st century. This Reader provides an essential resource that exposes students to original writing. The Editors provide a pathway through the material with Section Introductions to assist the readers understanding of the context of the material and impacts of the writings. The readings included draw from a range of authors, writing from a range of locations. The Reader concludes with the latest changes in geopolitical thought, incorporating feminist and other perspectives.

After decades of peace in England, young men become mercenaries to fight for principle, wealth or adventure. Richard Farrell enlists in the Low Countries, looking for a purpose to his life, and finds love, a career and a series of moral dilemmas. Sir William Brereton, prominent Puritan, and rising star in England’s Parliament, struggles to find God’s task for him in the growing political conflict with the King. Both men have their worlds turned upside down by encounters with the fey and mysterious Marleigh Hume, a woman pursuing a singular goal, to understand the very nature of life itself. At its heart, the At the Edge of Promises series is about purpose and passion – how religion, love, and politics drive the stories of people through the dramatic upheavals of the Civil War. In Sow the Wind, decisions and actions set wheels of fate in motion - wheels of tragedy, vengeance and redemption - with the interwoven stories coming to surprising and dramatic conclusions in the second book in the series, Reap the Whirlwind.

Book Women Art and Literature in the Iranian Diaspora

Download or read book Women Art and Literature in the Iranian Diaspora written by Mehraneh Ebrahimi and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the study of aesthetics have tangible effects in the real world? Does examining the work of diaspora writers and artists change our view of “the Other”? In this thoughtful book, Ebrahimi argues that an education in the humanities is as essential as one in politics and ethics, critically training the imagination toward greater empathy. Despite the surge in Iranian memoirs, their contributions to debunking an abstract idea of terror and their role in encouraging democratic thinking remain understudied. In examining creative work by women of Iranian descent, Ebrahimi argues that Shirin Neshat, Marjane Satrapi, and Parsua Bashi make the Other familiar and break a cycle of reactionary xenophobia. These authors, instead of relying on indignation, build imaginative bridges in their work that make it impossible to blame one evil, external enemy. Ebrahimi explores both classic and hybrid art forms, including graphic novels and photo-poetry, to advocate for the importance of aesthetics to inform and influence a global community. Drawing on the theories of Rancière, Butler, Arendt, and Levinas, Ebrahimi identifies the ways in which these works give a human face to the Other, creating the space and language to imagine a new political and ethical landscape.

In 2007, seemingly overwhelmed, he resigned after only a year as prime minister. Yet, following five years of reinvention, he masterfully regained the premiership in 2012, and now dominates Japanese democracy as no leader has done before. Abe has inspired fierce loyalty among his followers, cowing Japan's left with his ambitious economic program and support for the security and armed forces. He has staked a leadership role for Japan in a region being rapidly transformed by the rise of China and India, while carefully preserving an ironclad relationship with Trump's America. The Iconoclast tells the story of Abe's meteoric rise and stunning fall, his remarkable comeback, and his unlikely emergence as a global statesman laying the groundwork for Japan's survival in a turbulent century.

Book excerpt: A witty, often satirical, A-Z medical encyclopedia, written by doctor and broadcaster, Michael O’Donnell whose barefaced approach to medicine is often serious but never solemn, and always entertaining. From an early age – his father was a GP in a Yorkshire mining village – Michael O’Donnell was aware of the oddities, uncertainties, life-affirming surprises and black comedy that make the practice of medicine so rewarding. His observations were enhanced when he worked as a GP in the ‘gilded south’ before becoming editor of World Medicine, rebel in residence on the General Medical Council, international medical journalist, and writer and presenter of over 100 television and radio medical documentaries.Inspired by a lifelong exposure to medical culture, and with tongue firmly in cheek, Michael defines, dissects and discusses a vast range of topics in his latest book. Including:• Arcanian: The approved language for discourse between politicians, NHS managers, and interdisciplinary in-depth strategic thinkers seeking to roll out a raft of innovative frameworks• Data: Information published in medical journals in lieu of thought.• Doubt: Apart from death, the only certainty in medicine.• Herbaceous fever: Obsessional state induced by overexposure to television gardening programmes.• Modernising the NHS: Striving earnestly to fix that which does not need fixing while not fixing that which does. • Patients: Quirky individuals put on this earth to thwart the plans of clear-thinking, well-meaning nurses, doctors, and health administrators. • Socialised medicine: Phrase US citizens use to denounce any healthcare system more equitable than their own.• Superstition: The irrational beliefs of other people. Our own irrational beliefs we call Faith
