Book excerpt: Tyneside in 1986 was punch-drunk in the aftermath of the Miners' Strike, its job market a hazardous place for a youngster embarking on a career. An ad for a 'Ship's Naturalist' in the West of Scotland attracted over 200 applicants, including a gangly 22-year-old landlubber from North Shields.Trawling for Eagles is a memoir from an enchanting time and place. It follows its writer on a boy-to-man adventure through an amazing experience, starting with a bizarre floating interview aboard the converted trawler, Glendale. It goes on to capture the essence of a two-year assault on the senses: sights from mountainous seas to epic sunsets; tastes from daily porridge to warming malt whiskies; smells from rotting dead barnacles to fine smoked salmon; freezing soakings from sea spray to blazing beach barbecues. The young Ship's Naturalist's main supporting cast was provided by the Scottish wildlife: huge, gaping Basking Sharks and tiny sea slugs, leaping dolphins and scratching seals, gaudy Puffins and majestic Golden Eagles. As colourful and varied as the wildlife were the local characters and the guests who came on board each week. Some were confirmed Glendale addicts who returned each year, while others were far from convinced about the wisdom of putting their safety into the hands of the young crew.

Book Eyes of an Eagle

Download or read book Eyes of an Eagle written by Christopher Everette Cenac Sr. and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-08-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Book for the Louisiana Bicentennial Celebration, 2012 In the year 1860, Jean-Pierre Cenac sailed from the sophisticated French city of Bordeaux to begin his new life in the city with the second busiest port of debarkation in the U.S. Two years before, he had descended the Pyrenees to Bordeaux from his home village of Barbazan-Debat, a terrain in direct contrast to the flatlands of Louisiana. He arrived in 1860, just when the U.S. Civil War began with the secession of the Southern states, and in New Orleans, just where there would be placed a prime military target as the war developed. Neither Creole nor Acadian, Pierre took his chances in the rural parish of Terrebonne on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Pierre's resolute nature, unflagging work ethic, steadfast determination, and farsighted vision earned him a place of respect he could never have imagined when he left his native country. How he forged his place in this new landscape echoes the life journeys of countless immigrants--yet remains uniquely his own. His story and his family's story exemplify the experiences of many nineteenth century immigrants to Louisiana and the experiences of their twentieth century descendants.

Book excerpt: Oysterponds, located on Long Island at the eastern end of the North Fork, was inhabited by colonists soon after the settlement of the town of Southold in 1640. The people of the area have a proud heritage divided between the land and the sea. During the first quarter of the 19th century, the hamlet divided into two communities: East Marion and Orient. Little has changed since the Civil War, as the two communities are still composed of graceful homes and shady streets. Popular with tourists during the late 19th century, the area continues to draw artists and photographers, as well as sailing enthusiasts and fishermen, with its rural charm and miles of shoreline. Although many of the commercial enterprises that once made up the business area are long gone, the buildings remain, transformed into elegant houses that give no hint of their commercial pasts. Vintage photographs from the collection of the Oysterponds Historical Society open a window into the past and allow a brief glimpse into the history of the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the current literature and knowledge on the evolution and ecology of all the birds named as eagles, with particular emphasis on the larger species. It also examines the past and current relations between eagles and people, including habitat change and conservation issues. Eagle ecologies and conservation are currently seriously impacted by human activities such as industrialization, urbanization, pollution, deforestation and hunting. Some eagle species have consequently experienced extreme population changes. There are, however, some positive developments. Eagles have a strong, historic bond with human civilization, due to their status as the world’s most charismatic birds. Conservation policies have also been successful in repopulating some ecosystems with breeding eagles. Therefore, despite the complexity of this relationship, there may yet be hope for this unique species group, frequently rated as the kings of birds, and symbolic of human power, ambition, royalty, nationality, and even concepts of God. It is hoped that this book will contribute to the further understanding of these unique and fantastic birds.

But Abdul Habib still had money, and hate, enough hate to spare to construct an elaborate plan which would destroy Gibraltar and the British Aircraft carrier which had committed the fatal strike. All he needed was luck to thread a nuclear warhead through the complicated network of the Middle East terrorist rings, get it on a Libyan freighter and head west across the Med-And enough luck to avoid the one man whose hate is even greater than his, Captain Peter Brodrick of the Royal Marines. A man Habib foolishly left alive, though he killed all his friends. A man whose fate is inextricably entwined with his.
