Book excerpt: The solution is finally revealed to the most notorious crime story of all. The person identified in this book as the killer of five women in London's East End in 1888 has never before been named a suspect in more than 100 years of intense speculation—and yet clear evidence connects him to three of the five victims, and circumstantial evidence connects him to the other two. Tony Williams did not set out to find Jack the Ripper, but when researching his family history he uncovered incontrovertible evidence that his illustrious ancestor John Williams—still venerated today, and an eminent man in his field—is indeed Jack the Ripper. Together, the authors prove not only that their suspect had links with the victims, but that he was in Whitechapel at the same time as the crimes were committed, and he had the knowledge and the skills which the nature of the murders required. At last, the legend and myths surrounding the identity of Jack the Ripper have been brought to an end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I arrived as a 'Ten Pound Pom' when the urge for exploration of that vast land, Oz, coincided with a former acquaintance’s invitation to join her and do likewise. This was Julie whom I had met on the voyage out, her proposal being to combine resources, purchase a second hand car, then fulfil our mutual aspirations. During the early 1960s, Mo Rudling and her friend Julie travelled thousands of miles around wild Australia with their faithful companion Morris, a sky-blue second hand Morris Minor. They spent many nights in the bush, sleeping in a two-man tent and cooking over just a camp fire and tackling unmarked roads (self-taught Mo having passed her driving test only a few weeks prior to the trip). The pair went down below to the opal mines at Coober Pedy, climbed above (without falling off!) Ayers Rock and, in time, sailed out in a glass-bottomed boat to view the oh-so colourful Great Barrier Reef. Both trained nurses, Julie and Mo were able to undertake short-term nursing contracts south of Perth, in Broome and later in Darwin as they made their way across the country. Mo even discovered a long-lost relative in Victoria – her uncle, a First World War hero who, having survived Gallipoli, went on to fight on the Western Front and returned to Australia to become a Soldier Settler. Travels with Morris is Mo Rudling’s account of her adventure in Australia. Inspired by the diaries she kept during her travels, this book will appeal to any fans of travel writing, particularly those who are attracted to the land of Oz as well as those who, like Mo, decided to emigrate there after the Second World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel is a subject of universal interest. It is in the neighborhood of impossible to find anyone who doesn’t want to travel and in most cases more than they have had the opportunity, or more importantly, the cash to do so. I too felt a constant obsession throughout a good part of my life to experience new places, new sights, new sounds, new smells, new tastes, new almost anything. I think I can say that I come by the travel bug honestly. My zodiac sign is Sagittarius and by the Chinese calendar I am a horse. Both have wanderlust bred in the bone. My first journey happened at the age of eleven when I accompanied my grandparents to England, land of their birth and my mother’s too. My little tale includes more contemporary experiences living and working in Nairobi, Paris, Edinburgh, London and China as well as trips throughout Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East. My intent is to be descriptive and not confessional as I wander back through my memory. I mean to offer a fun and lighthearted recounting of events and not a baring of the soul. I hope, dear Reader you find your time well spent.

Book excerpt: Today, he’s a high school dropout with no future. Tomorrow, he’s a soldier in World War II. Kale Jackson has spent years trying to control his time-traveling ability but hasn't had much luck. One day he lives in 1945, fighting in the war as a sharpshooter and helplessly watching soldiers—friends—die. Then the next day, he’s back in the present, where WWII has bled into his modern life in the form of PTSD, straining his relationship with his father and the few friends he has left. Every day it becomes harder to hide his battle wounds, both physical and mental, from the past. When the ex-girl-next-door, Harper, moves back to town, thoughts of what could be if only he had a normal life begin to haunt him. Harper reminds him of the person he was before the PTSD, which helps anchor him to the present. With practice, maybe Kale could remain in the present permanently and never step foot on a battlefield again. Maybe he can have the normal life he craves. But then Harper finds Kale’s name in a historical article—and he’s listed as a casualty of the war. Is Kale’s death inevitable? Does this mean that, one of these days, when Kale travels to the past, he may not come back? Kale knows now that he must learn to control his time-traveling ability to save himself and his chance at a life with Harper. Otherwise, he’ll be killed in a time where he doesn’t belong by a bullet that was never meant for him.

Book What We Inherit

Book excerpt: "A beautiful amalgam of memoir, travelogue, and investigative report that moves with the propulsive forward energy of a thriller. A haunting chronicle of loss and redemption." --Ron Chernow, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Alexander Hamilton In the wake of her mother's death, Jessica Pearce Rotondi uncovers boxes of letters, declassified CIA reports, and newspaper clippings that bring to light a family ghost: her uncle Jack, who disappeared during the CIA-led "Secret War" in Laos in 1972. The letters lead her across Southeast Asia in search of the truth that has eluded her family for decades. What she discovers takes her closer to the mother she lost and the mysteries of a secret war that changed the rules of engagement forever. In 1943, 19-year-old Edwin Pearce jumps from a burning B-17 bomber over Germany. Missing in action for months, his parents finally learn he is a prisoner of war in Stalag 17. Ed survives nearly three years in prison camp and a march across the Alps before returning home. Ed's eldest son and namesake, Edwin "Jack," follows his father into the Air Force. But on the night of March 29, 1972, Jack's plane vanishes over the mountains bordering Vietnam and Ed's past comes roaring into the present. In 2009, Ed's granddaughter, Jessica Pearce Rotondi, is grieving her mother's death when she stumbles across declassified CIA documents, letters, and maps that reveal her family's decades-long search for Jack. What We Inherit is Rotondi's story of her own hunt for answers as she retraces her grandfather's 1973 path across Southeast Asia in search of his son. An excavation of inherited trauma on a personal and national scale, What We Inherit reveals the power of a father's refusal to be silenced and a daughter's quest to rediscover her voice in the wake of loss. As Rotondi nears the last known place Jack was seen alive, she grows closer to understanding the mystery that has haunted her family for generations--and the destructive impact of a family secret so big it encompassed an entire war.

Book A Year of American Travel

Download or read book A Year of American Travel written by Jessie Benton Frémont and published by . This book was released on 1878 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jessie Benton Frémont (1824-1902), the daughter of a Missouri Senator and wife of explorer John Charles Frémont, first came to California in 1849, when she and her young daughter spent six months at her husband's newly-acquired ranch at Mariposas, 140 miles east of San Francisco. The Frémonts also spent the years 1851-1852 and 1857-1861 at the Mariposas ranch before moving to St. Louis during the Civil War. They returned to California in 1887 and made Los Angeles their home for the rest of their lives. A year of American travel (1878) was written by Mrs. Frémont to earn badly-needed money for her family after her husband went bankrupt in 1873. Here she describes her first trip to California in 1849: the voyage and crossing at Chagres, life on the Mariposas ranch, visits to San José and Monterey, the life of women in California, the plight of the Mission Indians, the slavery controversy in the territory, and the Monterey Constitutional Convention of 1849. The book closes with the Frémonts' return to the East when Frémont assumed his seat in the U.S. Senate.
