Sometimes the border of these caps extends to some length besore sore and behind, and ends in a point; and a cap thus lhaped they call in their own language nindne kapperak, which means a cap with a nofe. The missionary says, he saw once a cap which belonged to a poor Laplander, and was made of a salmon's skin; it was white, and had square divisions, which were visible where the scales had dropped from the skin. They wear a fort of riding-hood, called by them rtvok, which they use in hunting, or in attending the tame rein-deer whilst seeding. This hood has only a small opening to look through, is clofe sewed up before, and when it is put on the head covers the breast and moulders: in front there appears a flap, which is called zhialbme-rqft. The men in Lapland very rarely wear any covering about their necks, or whenever they make use of something like it, it consists of a harrow piece of cloth, which only goes once round; so that their throats are always expofed naked, or nearly so, to the severity of the weather. The tunick, or clofe garment, worn by the Laplander, is called a fork, and is made of sheep's skin with the wool on, the woolly side being inwards: it has a high collar, made stiff with kersey, or other cloth, neatly worked with different coloured threads, and extending a little way down the bofom. As this tunick at the fame time serves for a shirt, it has no opening but where it covers the breast; and it is more or less ornamented, according to the condition and fancy of the wearer, with cloth in like manner as the collar, and bordered with otter's Ikin. Book Historical Dictionary of the Music and Musicians of Finland

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Music and Musicians of Finland written by Barbara B. Hong and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-12-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting information heretofore difficult or impossible to find in English, this work opens a window on the colorful panorama of Finnish music. The 500-plus entries present historical and modern composers, the accomplishments of hundreds of internationally acclaimed performing artists, as well as more general articles on folk music, early manuscripts and publications, cantors and hymnals, early Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Lutheran music, leading orchestras and choral groups, festivals, and much more. No other such extensive and comprehensive work on Finnish music exists in any language other than Finnish and Swedish. This English-language dictionary makes the subject available to readers throughout the world. In addition to the entries, chronologies of Finnish history and Finnish music, as well as a map of Finland, correlate history and locations with the entries. A general bibliography and entry-specific bibliographies offer further resources. The Dictionary interprets a sometimes limited amount of available information, describing forms and styles of compositions, operatic roles performed, the content of scholarly work, and significant and unusual events in the lives of the musicians.

Book excerpt: This volume of Geographers Biobibliographical Studies brings together essays on four Frenchmen, a Czech, and three Englishmen. The lives of our subjects extend from the late Enlightenment and the era of 'polite science' in Regency Britain to the first decade of the 21st century. These geographers and their studies are linked not only in their regional expertise - from Brazil, French Indo-China to Scandinavia and South Africa - but also by their commitment to the development of geography as a science and as a discipline. Here, in different settings and at different times, we can see how the lived experience of geographers' lives shaped the contours of the subject.

Book The Kalevala

  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book The Kalevala written by and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1985-03-15 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national folk epic of Finland is here presented in an English translation that is both scholarly and eminently readable. To avoid the imprecision and metrical monotony of earlier verse translations, Francis Magoun has used prose, printed line for line as in the original so that repetitions, parallelisms, and variations are readily apparent. The lyrical passages and poetic images, the wry humor, the tall-tale extravagance, and the homely realism of the Kalevala come through with extraordinary effectiveness.
