Download or read book Travels in North America Vol 1 of 2 written by Basil Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in North America, Vol. 1 of 2: In the Years 1827 and 1828 The chief object I had in view in visiting America was to see things with my own eyes, in order to ascertain, by personal inspection, how far the sentiments prevalent in England with respect to that country were correct or otherwise. To avoid all undue influence, I considered it best to defer reading the works of preceding travellers, until I should have formed my own opinions on the subject; but I found so much plea sure during the journey, from the freshness of original and unbiassed observation, that on my return I resolved to persevere in this self-denial somewhat longer, that my narrative also might be derived, as far as possible, from those local sources of information which had fallen within the reach of my own inquiries. The habits of an active professional life having put it out of my power to study in the closet many of the subjects discussed in these volumes, I have endeavoured, in touching them, to supply the want of reading, by availing myself of a pretty extensive acquaintance with the actual workings of numerous other political and moral experiments, which chance has thrown in my way in different quarters of the globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Some Parts of North America, in the Years 1804, 1805,& 1806 The narrative and observations now presented to the public, were the fruits of a voyage undertaken solely with commercial views* They were written without any expectation of their being copied, and without the remotest thought of publication. But falling accidentally under the notice of the Editor, he was pleased with perusing them, and believed that, if printed, they would also be agreeable to many others. He accordingly communicated this idea to the writer, who, after considering the subject, with a proper degree of modesty, consented to the proposal. If the reader should derive amusement or instruction from this work, he will naturally wish to know something respecting the author. He is the second son of the late Doctor Abraham Sutcliff, who practised, with much skill and reputation, as a physician, in Sheffield, and who died there about twelve years since. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From a Journal of Travels in North America: Consisting of an Account of Boston and Its Vicinity This city is irregularly built. The build ings are mostly of brick, and three or fou'r stories high. The streets are generally in regular, and many of them narrow and dirty. I observed some however sufficiently wide and cleanly, and lined with spacious walks for foot people. This city seems to consist of nothing but shops, at whose windows innumerable sorts of wares are exhibited with a good deal of e 'ect. On the west side of the town is an extensive opening or square, enclosed on three sides by buildings and on the fourth by water. This must be very beautiful when 'the season is mild and the trees and ground covered with 'verdure. I shall take occasion to mention this again.
