Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in New-England and New-York, Vol. 2 of 4 As we arrived at Groton in the evening, and left it early in the morning, and as our road passed by the body of the town at some distance on the right, we had no opportunity of observing it particularly. As we saw it, it appeared to be a very pretty village, pleasantly situated on an easy slope, and containing a considerable number of good houses, a church, and an academy. The country around it was apparently fertile. In 1790, the number of inhabitants was in 1800, and, in 1810, The number of houses, in 1800, was 230. I was detained by rain until three o'clock in the afternoon, and then rode to Watertown: twenty-six miles. The next day 1 proceeded to Sheffield: forty-one miles. At Litchfield, and afterwards at Canaan, I had expected to find my destined companions in this excursion; but missed of them in both places. At the latter, after a solitary ride of between fifty and sixty miles, I found some gentlemen going to Sheffield, whose company made the remainder of the way very agreeable. The day was remarkably cold for the season, and was followed by a severe frost; the ice at Sheffield being, the next morning, about the thickness of a dollar, and the tender vegetables generally destroyed. During the preceding nine years there has not, in those parts of the country where I have journeyed, been a frost, sufficiently intense to destroy vegetables of this class, until about the middle of October.

These six states are filled with odd curiosities and bizarre legends, such as the elusive Vermont hum, the hibernating hill folk, hillside whale tales, and the Holy Land (yes, you read that right). Tongue-in-cheek and filled with dry wit, this is a journey you'll not soon forget."--P. [4] of cover.
