The present occasion, so far from forming an exception to the rule, exemplifies it in a very remarkable degree. The subjects upon which additional information has been acquired during the progress of the printing of these volumes are many; but there are some in particular which deserve special notice, to which it may therefore be well to call attention here. Download or read book Travels in India written by Jean-Baptiste Tavernier and published by . This book was released on 1889 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605-89) was one of the most renowned travelers of 17th century Europe. The son of a French Protestant who had fled Antwerp to escape religious persecution, Tavernier was a jewel merchant who between 1632 and 1668 made six voyages to the East. The countries he visited (most more than once) included present-day Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. In 1676 he published his two-volume Les six voyages de Jean Baptiste Tavernier (The six voyages of Jean Baptiste Tavernier). An abridged and very imperfect English translation of the book appeared in 1677. The first modern scholarly edition in English, presented here, was published in 1889, with translation, notes, and a biographical sketch of Tavernier by Dr. Valentine Ball (1843-95), a British civil servant with the Indian Geological Service. Among the most memorable chapters in the book are those that recount Tavernier's visits to the diamond mines of India and his inspection of the jewels of the Great Mogul. Tavernier was not a scholar or an educated linguist, and after his initial popularity in the 17th century his authority waned, as historians and others questioned the accuracy of his observations. In the 20th century, however, Tavernier's reputation rose, as such important historians as Lucien Febvre and Fernand Braudel used the detailed information he recorded about the prices and qualities of goods and about business and commercial practices in their pioneering studies of economic and social history. The book contains several appendices by Ball about famous diamonds (including the historic Koh-i-Noor Diamond now belonging to the British royal family), diamond mines in India and Borneo, ruby mines in Burma, and sapphire washings in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). A fold-out map shows Tavernier's voyages in India and the mines he visited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overland to India, Vol. 2 of 2 Just as we were setting out on February 19 a small caravan arrived from Khur on its way to Cha-meji. Its leader warned us most emphatically not to cross the great Kevir bay, which would certainly be under water in some parts, and wherein any case we Should quite ruin our camels. Ah, well, we thought, we shall see when we come nearer, and we marched on in good but cold weather (388 at seven o'clock) and under a sky streaked and mottled by small white clouds in quite the same regular arrangement as the small ridges and lines in the sand of a Shallow lake. Small dwindling rain-furrows ran towards the east-north-east, and on the right we left a small longish pool formed by rain water. Beyond the eastern point of the range of hills on our right now appeared another higher range with snow on its crest, called Kuh-i-pusht-i-badam, while to the south east the country was quite flat and open, and to the east south-east was seen a hill called Kuh-i-rabat-i-khan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in India, Vol. 1 of 2 IT was not MY intention, when I went to India, to write an account of my travels: my visit was purely one of friendly sympathy. Circumstances recorded in the following narrative, led me to modify my original intention, and greatly extended my sphere of observa tion. The light afl'orded me by my past experience, as well as the sympathy in my work of the Supreme Go vernment and that of each Presidency, and the friendly confidence of the native inhabitants, enabled me, in my brief visit, to see and learn much which does not usually come under the notice of travellers. Every thing, invested with the charm of novelty, produced a very vivid impression on my mind; and though I had no time while in the country to record in writing many of these impressions, yet I had peculiar opportunities of comparing them with those of official gentlemen, and of experienced residents in the country, and thus of correcting or strengthening them.
