During the reign of Augustus it became one of the most important naval stations of the Roman empire in the Tyrrhenian Sea, as Ravenna was in the Adriatic; and the summit of the Hill on which stand the Ruins of the Villa of Lucullus, commands a fine view ofthe former Port, the Stygian Lake (for such, according to Virgil, is the Mare Morto, or third Basin ofthis Harbour), and the Elysian Fields, (_3) situated on the banks of the Mare Morto. When returning from the summit of the Hill, it is cusmary to visit the Cento Camerette, supposed to have been a Prison; and consisting of several small Subterranean Apartments vaulted, and lined with plaster.
