Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Europe and the East: During the Years 1858-59 and 1863-64 Few young American women have enjoyed as extensive opportunities of travel as did the author of the following pages; and her vivid imagination, and keen appreciation of. All that is most beautiful in Nature and in Art, attest themselves in all that she has written. Her first visit to Europe was made in company with her parents, her eldest sister and her cousin, in the fall of 1858. She returned home in the autumn of the following year: and it is from her journal kept during this period that the first part of the present volume was afterwards written out by her. In August, 1863, she visited China, going by way of California, crossing the Pacific in a sailing ship-the line of steamers not being yet established - and returned home in August of the following year by what is known as the Peninsular and Oriental Overland route, via Singapore, Ceylon, Suez. And Europe - a journey of great interest, encircling the earth. Descriptive letters written at different pomts on this tour form the second part of these records of travel. In November, 1867, in company with her husband and two sisters she re-visited Europe, passing most of the winter in Rome and Naples, and returned in the following June. Her last long journey was undertaken as a great invalid. With the hope of deriving benefit from a sea voyage. In September, 1875. With her husband and their two children - Henry Trowbridge, born April i5th, 1870, and William Bradford, born June 2sth 1872 - she sailed from New York for Rio de Janeiro via St. Thomas, Para, Pernambuco, and Bahia. Remaining only a week in Rio the party returned to St Thomas, and crossed to Santa Cruz. Where three months were passed; and in the latter part of February they returned to New York via St. Thomas and St. John. P. R. On these last two journeys no journal was kept. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding the Worth-While in Europe For this reason I have little to say of the great cities which I have found very much like each other and like our own, but I do aim to show the way to some of those places in every land to see which will surely make of the trip a pleasant memory. Many of these are included in every well planned European tour, but some are not, and take my word for it and be not afraid to turn aside sometimes from the beaten track, for in the odd corners of the earth are often found its greatest beauties. Book By Ways of Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book By Ways of Europe Classic Reprint written by Bayard Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Ways of Europe This is probably the last volume of travels which I shall ever publish. It closes a series of personal and literary experiences which cannot be renewed, and which I have no belief will be extended. Now, therefore, all that I have done as a traveller detaches itself from my other labors, lies clear behind me as a life by itself, and may be considered with a degree of self-criticism which was scarcely possible while it lay nearer. The brief review which I desire to make, must necessarily be autobiograph ical in its character, and I am aware that this is question able ground. But as I have been specially styled, for so many years and little to my own satisfaction, a traveller or a tourist, and in either character have received praise and blame, equally founded on a misconception of the facts and hopes of my life, I claim the privilege, this once, to set the truth before those who may care to hear it. Book Travels and Politics in the Near East Classic Reprint

Download or read book Travels and Politics in the Near East Classic Reprint written by William Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels and Politics in the Near East This book is the result of four visits to the Balkan Peninsula in the years 1894, 1896, 1897, and 1898, and of a long study of the Eastern question. While I can honestly say that I have acquainted myself with all the principal works which have appeared on the Near East during the last ten years, I have in all cases relied upon my own personal observations and inquiries, conducted upon the spot, for the statements made in the following pages. Most persons who have written upon South-Eastern Europe have treated the subject in a partisan spirit, some championing the claims of one nationality, others espousing the cause of another. Not being an enthusiastic admirer of any one Balkan race to the exclusion of all others, I have endeavoured to discover what is most for the material progress and welfare of them all. The critics of "The Balkans" were kind enough to say that I had been impartial in narrating the history of the Peninsula; I trust that I may be found to have been equally so in describing its present condition.
