These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Travels in Arabia: Look inside the book: The people here have an odd and foolish sort of tradition concerning them, viz., That when Abraham went about building the Beat-Allah (Beit-Allah, or 'House of God'), God by his wonderful providence did so order it, that every mountain in the world should contribute something to the building thereof; and accordingly every one did send its proportion, though there is a mountain near Algier which is called Corradog, i.e., Black Mountain, and the reason of its blackness, they say, is because it did not send any part of itself towards building the temple at Mecca. ..."About half a mile out of Mecca is a very steep hill, and there are stairs made to go to the top of it, p. 13where is a cupola, under which is a cloven rock; into this, they say, Mahomet when very young, viz., about four years of age, was carried by the angel Gabriel, who opened his breast and took out his heart, from which he picked some black blood specks, which was his original corruption; then put it into its place again, and afterward closed up the part; and that during this operation Mahomet felt no pain." About Bayard Taylor, the Author: The accounts which he sent from Europe to The New York Tribune, The Saturday Evening Post, and The United States Gazette were so highly appreciated that on Taylor's return to America, he was advised to compile his articles into book form. ...The results of these journeys (besides his poetical memorials) were A Journey to Central Africa; or, Life and Landscapes from Egypt to the Negro Kingdoms of the White Nile (New York, 1854); The Lands of the Saracen; or, Pictures of Palestine, Asia Minor, Sicily and Spain (1854); and A Visit to India, China and Japan in the Year 1853 (1855).

It is the first book to be written, in any language, about wide tracts of the Arabian Penisula. Out of his remote and lonely wanderings, Doughty fashioned a lyrical evocation of the desert and the peoples who inhabit this mysterious world. The great Arabist, T. E. Lawrence also enthused about Doughty's achievement: 'The book had no date and can never grow old. It is the first and indispensable work upon the Arabs of the desert'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travels in Arabia Deserta, originally published in 1888, is a two-volume set which describes English poet Charles Doughty's extensive travels through the Arabian deserts and the discoveries he made there. The work became well-regarded for its beautiful prose as well as its extensiveness, which made it a benchmark of ambitious travel writing in the early 20th century. Written in the style of the King James Bible, the text is extravagant and creative. In the 1920's, it was discovered by British Army Officer T.E. Lawrence, who spurred the book's republication, this time with an introduction from Lawrence. The book has been in and out of print since then, but the Cosimo edition is a rare 1921 reprint, and includes the Lawrence introduction. Volume I includes T.E. Lawrence's Introduction, as well as accounts of Doughty's treks to Mecca, Ammon and Moab, the Mountain of Edom, Arabia, the Passage of the Harra, Teyma, and more. He also describes nomad life in the desert and ancient stories, peoples, and myths connected with his travels. CHARLES MONTAGU DOUGHTY (1843-1926) was an English poet and writer born in Theberton Hall, Saxmundham, Suffolk. He attended King's College London and graduated from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1864. Among this author's works are an epic poem in six volumes titled The Dawn in Britain, published in 1906, and his well-known Travels in Arabia Deserta, for which he received much praise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Arabia Arabia has been inhabited by the same race since the earliest times, and has changed less, in the course of thousands of years, than any other country of the globe, not excepting China. According to Biblical genealogy, the natives are descended from Ham, through Cush but the Bedouins have always claimed that they are the posterity of Ishmael. Some portions of the country, such as Edom, or Idumaea, Teman and Sheba, (the modern Yemen, ) are mentioned in the Old Testament but neither the Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian, nor Egyptian monarchies succeeded in gaining possession of the peninsula. Alexander the Great made preparations for a journey of conquest, which was prevented by his death, and Trojan was the only Roman emperor who penetrated into the interior. Book excerpt: In its ports, we find a priceless cargo of information; here are the first foreign descriptions of tea and porcelain, a panorama of unusual social practices, cannibal islands, and Indian holy men--a marvelous, mundane world, contained in the compass of a novella. In Mission to the Volga, we move north on a diplomatic mission from Baghdad to the upper reaches of the Volga River in what is now central Russia. This colorful documentary by Ibn Fadlan relates the trials and tribulations of an embassy of diplomats and missionaries sent by caliph al-Muqtadir to deliver political and religious instruction to the recently-converted King of the Bulghars. During eleven months of grueling travel, Ibn Fadlan records the marvels he witnesses on his journey, including an aurora borealis and the white nights of the North. Crucially, he offers a description of the Viking Rus, including their customs, clothing, tattoos, and a striking account of a ship funeral.

Book excerpt: 2015 Reprint of Original 1955 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Abridged by Edward Garnett. Long famous among scholars and students of Arab history and culture, readers of travel and adventure books, and lovers of English literature, Charles M. Doughty's "Travels in Arabia Deserta" is in its original form a formidable work of over 1,400 pages, a daunting length for many readers. This excellent abridgment, less than a quarter of that length, is ideally suited to a wide audience of general readers. Written after the author had spent two years wandering among the Bedouin nomads, the remarkable book describes Doughty's attempt to reach Mecca, his endurance of extraordinary hardships, and his first-hand observations of Arab life and culture in the 1870s. The work is as revered for the exceptional power and beauty of its prose as it is for its panoramic view of a fascinating and mysterious land. Originally published as "Passages from Arabia Deserta" by Horace Liveright, Inc., New York, 1931.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arabistan, or the Land of "the Arabian Nights" Being Travels Through Egypt, Arabia, and Persia, to Bagdad My motive in visiting these countries was not merely the pursuit of pleasure, but a desire to gratify a long-cherished wish, I might almost say a passion, to see, at least once in my lifetime, the strange and curious nations of the Orient, which have always had for me a strange fascination. The excuse of ordinary travelers who write books, was not mine. I was not ordered abroad by the doctors, but started in perfect health, which I retained through all the vicissitudes of scene and climate, and I may add that I met with no serious mishap to mar the pleasure of the journey.
