Book excerpt: Openness about gamete (i.e. sperm or egg) donation and the regulation of donor-anonymity or non-anonymity are new phenomena. How do affected families, clinics, and regulators deal with information about the donors and the donation in Germany and Britain? And how does this ‘knowledge-management’ contribute to the making and doing of kinship? Addressing these questions through an ethnographic exploration, this book makes a comparative contribution to the empirical and theoretical analysis of kin-formation and social change in plural late-modern societies in Europe. The research demonstrates a contemporary re-negotiation of the values of privacy, information-sharing, and connectedness – with transparency as moral imperative, not genetics. Instead of an unambiguously discernible ‘geneticisation’ the findings on donor-non-anonymity and parental openness display a pattern of ‘transparentization’. In ensemble a shift of authority becomes evident, more minute in Germany than in Britain, towards concerned groups, parents-by-donation, and policy-makers, away from a sometimes high handed reproductive medical profession.

Competitions held in two towns are intense annual events. This lively secular masquerade is a carnival form that has been practiced for well over a century primarily by coastal Fante people, and many additional ethnicities participate today. Kakaamotobe: Fancy Dress Carnival in Ghana explores the fascinating history, aesthetics, performance, and underlying messages of this masquerade with ties to other carnivalesque practices in the Black Atlantic. While Fancy Dress may engage with global cultures through some of its aesthetics, the practice is profoundly African. The utilization of elaborate costumes, masks, and brass bands expresses not a desire to imitate outside cultures, but rather the impulse of youth to adapt traditional culture to the contemporary environment. Courtnay Micots argues that the outward impression of folly belies the more serious refashioning of power, identity, and modernity in the community.

Book excerpt: Convinced that sexual immorality and unstable gender norms were endangering national recovery after World War One, German lawmakers drafted a constitution in 1919 legalizing the censorship of movies and pulp fiction, and prioritizing social rights over individual rights. These provisions enabled legislations to adopt two national censorship laws intended to regulate the movie industry and retail trade in pulp fiction. Both laws had their ideological origins in grass-roots anti-'trash' campaigns inspired by early encounters with commercial mass culture and Germany's federalist structure. Before the war, activists characterized censorship as a form of youth protection. Afterwards, they described it as a form of social welfare. Local activists and authorities enforcing the decisions of federal censors made censorship familiar and respectable even as these laws became a lightning rod for criticism of the young republic. Nazi leaders subsequently refashioned anti-'trash' rhetoric to justify the stringent censorship regime they imposed on Germany.
