Book excerpt: The story of Seven Continents, 22 Diaries chronicles the round-the-world travels of Bernd Kiekebusch and his wife Lucy Steinitz from 2010 to 2011. Readers won't find any blood-curdling tales of life-threatening emergencies in these pages. Rather, this is armchair travel of a quieter kind, comprised of insights, interactions and activities that many travelers might have in small doses but few are fortunate enough to string them together over a twelve month period as a single experience. In two countries - Belize and Cambodia - they spent three months each as volunteers. In the other countries (18 in all) they were more typical tourists, except that Lucy and Bernd, an American and German by origin, aren't your typical kind of anything. The authors' story actually began 13 years earlier in 1997, when they decided to solve their midlife crisis by moving from Maryland (in the USA) to Namibia (in Africa), with their two children and their dog Meshugenah. It is in Namibia where they started writing diaries to friends and relatives (soon to be published separately as Baobabs and Camelthorns: Thirteen Years in Namibia with coauthor Mary Konopka, 2018 projected). After their children left home and other obligations subsided, they began to get the itch for another adventure. In early 2010 Bernd had just retired from the Polytechnic of Namibia, where he taught math and computer science. Lucy's office - where she did development work around HIV & AIDS -- was shrinking in size. They had no clear idea what to do next. So they took a vacation to Zanzibar where Lucy popped the question: Why not sell our house and travel around the world for one year, including Antarctica? Bernd couldn't resist the temptation. Their philosophy had always been, Make the most of every day. Understanding that there is no better time than the present to jump the fence and live your dreams, they did just that. This book consists of periodic e-mail diaries that were originally sent to about 300 of the authors' friends and relatives from June 24, 2010 to June 24, 2011. It spans 116 pages and contains over 400 photographs, and it just may tempt you to jump your own fence and live out your own dreams, whatever these may be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ◆ Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents follows Marty and Deb Essen on a three-and-a-half-year-long adventure to some of the wildest places on all seven continents. The American couple began crisscrossing the globe with the simple intention of searching for rare and interesting wildlife. When their travels coincided with the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the added element made them unwitting ambassadors for peace. Their experiences—from amusing to life threatening—changed their lives forever. This is not your average travelogue. Marty Essen has written a book that entertains, informs, and poignantly reminds us that we all share a small planet. Locations visited include: Belize, Peru (the Amazon Rainforest), Argentina, Australia (Queensland), Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Northwest Territories), Antarctica, Europe (Spain, France, Switzerland, and Andorra), Malaysia (Borneo), and Africa (Zimbabwe). “This is a wonderful book—a labor of love—that describes in soul-stirring language what it is like to live with the people, the animals, the birds, the snakes, the insects, the jungles, the treacherous rivers, the gorgeous scenery of seven continents. It is the best travel and exploratory work I have yet encountered. Marty Essen and his wife, Deb, are two highly intelligent, imaginative, and brave people.”—Senator George McGovern, 1972 Democratic nominee for president “An exciting and adventurous read. Cool Creatures, Hot Planet by Marty Essen is a roller coaster ride through the natural world that will both entertain and enlighten readers.”—Jeff Corwin, The Jeff Corwin Experience

Book Far and Away

Download or read book Far and Away written by Andrew Solomon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the winner of the National Book Award and the National Books Critics’ Circle Award—and one of the most original thinkers of our time—“Andrew Solomon’s magisterial Far and Away collects a quarter-century of soul-shaking essays” (Vanity Fair). Far and Away chronicles Andrew Solomon’s writings about places undergoing seismic shifts—political, cultural, and spiritual. From his stint on the barricades in Moscow in 1991, when he joined artists in resisting the coup whose failure ended the Soviet Union, his 2002 account of the rebirth of culture in Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban, his insightful appraisal of a Myanmar seeped in contradictions as it slowly, fitfully pushes toward freedom, and many other stories of profound upheaval, this book provides a unique window onto the very idea of social change. With his signature brilliance and compassion, Solomon demonstrates both how history is altered by individuals, and how personal identities are altered when governments alter. A journalist and essayist of remarkable perception and prescience, Solomon captures the essence of these cultures. Ranging across seven continents and twenty-five years, these “meaty dispatches…are brilliant geopolitical travelogues that also comprise a very personal and reflective resume of the National Book Award winner’s globe-trotting adventures” (Elle). Far and Away takes a magnificent journey into the heart of extraordinarily diverse experiences: “You will not only know the world better after having seen it through Solomon’s eyes, you will also care about it more” (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Book Travels in Three Continents

Download or read book Travels in Three Continents written by J. M. Buckley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Three Continents: Europe, Africa, Asia In reading accounts of the same regions by different travelers, I have often been struck with the dissimilarities resulting from the personal equation. Each sees what he takes with him, so that several views are more illuminating than one. Because of this I hope that there will be a place for another record of travel in many of the most interesting parts of the world. Learning by experience, in protracted tours, that a certain amount of information is necessary to the interpretation of what one sees and hears, I have endeavored to interweave such knowledge with the narrative without impeding the natural flow of description. Thus I desire to aid those who contemplate this journey to prepare for it; to refresh the recollection of those who have preceded me; and enable those who do not expect to cross the ocean to see, "while looking through my eyes," almost "as well as with their own."
