  • Author : Thomas P. McKenna
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky

  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Kontum written by Thomas P. McKenna and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1972, North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam in what became known as the Easter Offensive. Almost all of the American forces had already withdrawn from Vietnam except for a small group of American advisers to the South Vietnamese armed forces. The 23rd ARVN Infantry Division and its American advisers were sent to defend the provincial capital of Kontum in the Central Highlands. They were surrounded and attacked by three enemy divisions with heavy artillery and tanks but, with the help of air power, managed to successfully defend Kontum and prevent South Vietnam from being cut in half and defeated. Although much has been written about the Vietnam War, little of it addresses either the Easter Offensive or the Battle of Kontum. In Kontum: The Battle to Save South Vietnam, Thomas P. McKenna fills this gap, offering the only in-depth account available of this violent engagement. McKenna, a U.S. infantry lieutenant colonel assigned as a military adviser to the 23rd Division, participated in the battle of Kontum and combines his personal experiences with years of interviews and research from primary sources to describe the events leading up to the invasion and the battle itself. Kontum sheds new light on the actions of U.S. advisers in combat during the Vietnam War. McKenna's book is not only an essential historical resource for America's most controversial war but a personal story of valor and survival.

Book Journey to South Vietnam

Download or read book Journey to South Vietnam written by John Williams and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a different perspective on the Vietnam conflict. Journey to South Vietnam is a story of real life events, including my career in the military services--the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the United States Air Force (USAF). These compelling and life-altering experiences seemed to defy the imagination. I was also searching for my god. I volunteered for South Vietnam when the United States was in turmoil and the military was not respected by the media or the American public. I worked behind the lines at Da Nang Air Base and not in the field where the action occurred, but still, a bounty was placed on my head for $10,000. While serving in the Marine Corps, I was transferred to the Caribbean Sea, in an operation during the Dominican Republic crisis, CARIB 4-65. During that time, my friends and fellow marines were being killed on a mountain known as Monkey Mountain, or Hill 621. This hill is situated south of the Son Tra Mountain Range. It overlooks Da Nang Harbor and China Beach in the Republic of South Vietnam. Their base camp was overrun by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the Vietcong (VC). After I was discharged from the marines, I felt I needed to get more involved in combat. I wanted to go back into the military to be placed into the "gauntlet of fire." It wasn't until much later that I realized I was struggling with PTSD. I joined the air force and, within a few months, volunteered for Da Nang, South Vietnam, near where a lot of my friends perished. I tried to inject a little humor in the work situation, but it was always misinterpreted. During this phase of my life, I had many close encounters, but God's presence was always there. As I look back, I now realize that God intervenes not just in my life but in all of our lives.

Book Surviving Bien Hoa

Book excerpt: His descriptive narratives include Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps units at Bien Hoa, Long Binh and Tan Son Nhut. He takes you on an exciting tour of Saigon, the Cambodian/Special Forces compound at Bien Hoa and the sprawling expanse of Long Binh Army Base where he attended the last Bob Hope USO show at the outdoor ampitheater in December 1971. His perspective on the sights, smells and sounds of Vietnam will have you feeling that you were there too from October 1971 to October 1972. The mortar and rocket attacks, especially the big one on the morning of August 1, 1972 at Bien Hoa are described in great detail. The photos of damaged buildings and aircraft help explain why surviving a tour of duty at Bien Hoa was a real goal. From arriving and departing "Freedom Birds" during peaceful interludes to the sheer terror and tragic moments of mortar and rocket attacks that changed lives forever, this book is a record of those experiences.

Download or read book A Lonely Kind of War written by Marshall Harrison and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From retired Air Force pilot Marshall Harrison comes a remarkable memoir of aerial warfare in Vietnam. In his third combat tour, Harrison found himself converted from the high performance world of jets to the awkward-looking OV-10 Bronco and assigned as a FAC forward air controller. A captivating tale of valor, brotherhood, and patriotism unravels in the pages of A Lonely Kind of War, Forward Air Controller, Vietnam, a posthumous release by this published author through Xlibris. Harrison is a born story teller. There is excitement, suspense, and humor in this account of the life of a FAC. They were a small group of dedicated pilots flying lightly armed prop-driven aircrafts in South Vietnam. Considered to be the eyes and ears of the attack aircraft, their job was to fly low and slow, find, fix, and direct airstrikes against an elusive enemy concealed by the heavy rainforest and jungles, an area the FACs referred to as the Green Square. The flying scenes are riveting: learning to fly the maneuverable Bronco, clearing in the fast-movers to drop massive 750-lb bombs without causing injury to the friendlies, and conducting covert operation into Cambodia---over the fence with the mad men in the green beanies. On one of these secret missions, he is shot down and spends a harrowing night in the jungle. FACs lived with the troops in the field and flew from unimproved airstrips; they virtually controlled the aerial battlefields of South Vietnam. Their losses were staggering and they usually died alone.

Book Ever Vigilant

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael J Hebert
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2021-12-04
  • ISBN : 9781981812646
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Ever Vigilant written by Michael J Hebert and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2021-12-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War is carried out by young people trained for the task. It occurs at the edge, or just over the edge, of what passes for civilized behavior. During the Vietnam War, the US military employed heavily-armed high-speed gunboats to intercept and disrupt enemy travel on the rivers and bays of South Vietnam. In this variant from standard Vietnam War works, Michael Hebert takes the reader along for a ride in this engaging memoir of his year in Vietnam. This light yet quick-witted nautical adventure entertains readers with tales of romance, daring exploits, and abject fear. It is full of mayhem peppered with humorous undertones. The remote Vung Ro Bay, while an idyllic setting, is not without peril. It is a constant target for snipers, mortar barrages, and full-out perimeter assaults. Hebert's boat becomes a casualty to a rocket propelled grenade. Their base is wiped out by a super typhoon and they are forced to spend two days in the South China Sea with mountainous swells that threaten to sink the small 32-foot craft. From start to finish, 'Ever Vigilant' is an introduction to a young man's journey and coming of age in a war zone. While primarily based on his first-hand experience, he deftly weaves sufficient representation to incorporate the difficult life circumstances of the Vietnamese people and the Viet Cong. The motivation for why the enemy fights is a product of the life-hardships they bear. 'Ever Vigilant' offers a lively, compulsive read.

This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""An important contribution to the literature on the war."" Gary R. Hess, Emeritus Distinguished Research Professor, Bowling Green State University. Author, --"Vietnam: Explaining America's Lost War." In his Reflections on the Vietnam War: A Fifty-Year Journey, Warren E. Hunt chronicles his long struggle to come to grips with the meaning of the Vietnam War and how it affected him before, during and after his tour in Vietnam with the U.S. First Infantry Division. Using a stylistic mix of personal anecdote, historical reflection and essay, the author weaves his experience of the war into a broad context encompassing the course of his life. Starting out as a naive and patriotic teenager drafted at age 19, he traces his path through military training, his impressions of Vietnam and its people, the absurdity of daily basecamp life, and the crucible of enemy fire. Returning to a nation torn apart by the war, he soon realizes that, even though he is no longer in the army, he cannot escape the war''s insane grasp. Catastrophic events in Vietnam and on the home front, along with the dawning awareness of suicides among his fellow veterans, prompt him to seek answers to the questions that haunt his daily life: Why did America go to war in Vietnam? How could we lose? Why did so many people have to suffer in vain? His quest leads him to the unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., where painful memories and powerful emotions merge to initiate a healing process for the author, his fellow veterans and the country at large.

Book excerpt: Providing insight in a family’s history against the backdrop of major world wars, Buster’s Book offers a collection of more than a thousand letters exchanged during the twentieth century as young men provided service to their country. In this memoir, author Donald Junkins has compiled letters, diaries, interviews, recollections, and photographs of the family’s participants in both world wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. This fascinating historical record includes the stories of a variety of escapades: from single-handedly opening an eight-year-old Nazi prison c& to B-24 air forays from New Guinea in which an aerial gunner shot down two Japanese Zero planes; and to the rescue in Korea of wounded men stalled in a jeep in the middle of a freezing river that culminated in the awarding of the Silver Star. Buster’s Book reflects both the lives of a middle-class American family during these years and the daily activities of two generations of young American men at war.

Book Stranger in the Forest

  • ISBN : 0375724958
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Stranger in the Forest written by Eric Hansen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2000-11-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Hansen was the first westerner ever to walk across the island of Borneo. Completely cut off from the outside world for seven months, he traveled nearly 1,500 miles with small bands of nomadic hunters known as Penan. Beneath the rain forest canopy, they trekked through a hauntingly beautiful jungle where snakes and frogs fly, pigs climb trees, giant carnivorous plants eat mice, and mushrooms glow at night. At once a modern classic of travel literature and a gripping adventure story, Stranger in the Forest provides a rare and intimate look at the vanishing way of life of one of the last surviving groups of rain forest dwellers. Hansen's absorbing, and often chilling, account of his exploits is tempered with the humor and humanity that prompted the Penan to take him into their world and to share their secrets.
