Download or read book An American Woman in Kuwait written by Stephanie C. Fox and published by QueenBeeBooks. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Woman in Kuwait is a travelogue written by an American lawyer who accompanied her husband, a Ph.D. immunologist, to Kuwait. The trip spanned almost six months, during the cooler parts of the year, from November 2004 to May 2005. This is an account that is academic rather than light armchair reading. Kuwait is a tiny nation covered almost entirely by barren desert. Its huge petroleum reserves and strategic location have made it a playing field on which great military conflicts have been settled during the past two decades. The country, located at the northern end of the Persian Gulf, became one of the wealthiest nations in history following discovery of oil in 1938 and development of the oil fields brought its citizens an unparalleled level of personal comfort. The author lived among Kuwaitis, ate traditional foods, mingled with Kuwaitis, studied Kuwaiti history, visited most of its museums, and spent a weekend with her husband at the Wafra Farms Oasis as Kuwaitis celebrated their Independence and Liberation Day holidays. She was even lucky enough to meet Kuwait’s most famous woman suffragist, Rola A. Al-Dashti, Ph.D. Stephanie made friends with Kuwaitis. She and her husband met people from Kuwait’s large community of expatriates – Egyptians, Turks, Syrians, and even one man from Saudi Arabia, which led to a hilarious encounter. Their cat, Scheherazade, a Kuwaiti war veteran herself, accompanied Stephanie to Kuwait. An American Woman in Kuwait is also the perfect guide for anyone traveling with a pet in the Islamic world. The book includes a glossary of Arabic words with a bibliography of the books and articles she read while in Kuwait.
Download or read book Kuwait Diary written by Holly Doyne and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2003, I said goodbye to my husband and children before leaving for Kuwait on a 12-month hardship tour. It was to be at least six months before mid-tour, if leave would be allowed by then. Checked in, and caught Lufthansa out of Frankfurt. Ever have one of those dreams in which you taxi forever and go nowhere? This was one of those off the end of the earth type experiences. With that, U.S. Army Physician Holly Doyne departed Germany for an assignment to Camp Doha as Command Surgeon, ARCENT-Kuwait, for what became a prolonged tour. This is her record of that time. It is about battling with the heat and the dust in the desert. It is about ordered chaos and confusion tempered with caring. It is a warm and lively account by a determined and compassionate physician who went to conquer, assigned to a location where making a difference really mattered.

Download or read book Digital Resistance in the Middle East written by Deborah Wheeler and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that Internet diffusion and use in the Middle East enables meaningful micro-changes in citizens' lives, even in states where no Arab Spring revolution occurred. Using ethnographic evidence and taking a comparative perspective, it presents a grass roots look at how new media use fits into the practice of everyday life. It explores why citizens use social media to digitally route around state and other forms of power at work in their lives. This increase in citizen civic engagement, supported by new media use, offers the possibility of a new order of things, from redefining patriarchal power relations at home, to reconfigurations of citizens' relationships with the state, broadly defined. The author argues that new media channels offer pathways to empowerment widely and cheaply in the Middle East.

Instead, the contributors will analyze how these challenges and subsequent response to them affected other aspects of the GCC socio-economic and political development, from direct impact of the COVID on the energy sector of the GCC to socio-economic consequences of the oil market crisis for the region and its potential fallouts for the international relations of the Gulf.
Download or read book Triptik written by Luiz Fernando Brandão and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-09-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRIPTIK, a Journey in the Land of the Gurus and Yonder, is the debut book by journalist, translator, and writer Luiz Fernando Brandão. The work recounts the ocean crossing of the author, then 23, to the Middle East aboard a refrigerated freighter. His goal: to graduate from the world’s oldest known organized center of Classical Yoga training, located in Mumbai, India, where he resided for six months. The story also relates some picturesque, at times almost fateful events that marked his overland passage from India to Europe and the period spent there. “During all these years, I’ve tired of hearing from people close to me, and even from strangers with whom I’ve shared my adventures, that I should write it all down in a book. Until one wag – I don’t really remember who — suggested that I had adventures enough in stock for three books. I sort of satisfied his suggestion and produced a book in three parts, a triptych: ‘Aboard a star’, ‘In the home of Patanjali’ and ‘Overland’”. The story was reconstituted from a travel diary and a notepad, a photo album “and impressions engraved in mind and heart.” TRIPTIK is an inspiring journey by Brandão, who with a light touch and good humor shares his search for spiritual experience through a narrative that is valuable for those interested in Yoga, professionals from the corporate world and all who wish to live more complete and better lives.

Download or read book Technology Application in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry of Bangladesh written by Azizul Hassan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tourism and hospitality industry of Bangladesh as a South Asian country has potential. Sustainable development of this industry in this country is on the move. Still, there are some hindrances which appear to be stymieing this industry’s overall development potential. Overcoming such hindrances can be partly enabled by applying digital innovation and introducing more Internet based platforms in the country’s tourism and hospitality industry. The country is believed to have emphasized innovative technology application in this industry, but technology applications in this industry in Bangladesh have so far attracted very few researchers, resulting in insufficient contributions and very limited knowledge. This book, therefore, can make a significant contribution towards the very limited knowledge in this identified research area. On the specific ground of technology application in the tourism and hospitality industry, the book covers concepts and context, the present scenario, product and service offers, and an analysis of the roles of public and private institutions. On related issues, the book also covers social media, networking and connectivity; sustainability practices and climate change effects; tourist experiences; developments; and challenges, suggestions, and future research directions. The book is expected to appeal to general readers, as well as researchers with an interest in technology applications in the tourism and hospitality industry. This book is also an essential read for the relevant policy planners and industry professionals.

Download or read book Imperial Life in the Emerald City written by Rajiv Chandrasekaran and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2006-09-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • National Book Award Finalist • This "eyewitness history of the first order ... should be read by anyone who wants to understand how things went so badly wrong in Iraq” (The New York Times Book Review). The Green Zone, Baghdad, Iraq, 2003: in this walled-off compound of swimming pools and luxurious amenities, Paul Bremer and his Coalition Provisional Authority set out to fashion a new, democratic Iraq. Staffed by idealistic aides chosen primarily for their views on issues such as abortion and capital punishment, the CPA spent the crucial first year of occupation pursuing goals that had little to do with the immediate needs of a postwar nation: flat taxes instead of electricity and deregulated health care instead of emergency medical supplies. In this acclaimed firsthand account, the former Baghdad bureau chief of The Washington Post gives us an intimate portrait of life inside this Oz-like bubble, which continued unaffected by the growing mayhem outside. This is a quietly devastating tale of imperial folly, and the definitive history of those early days when things went irrevocably wrong in Iraq.
Download or read book The Old Woman and the River written by Ismail Fahad Ismail and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the ceasefire in 1988, the devastation to the landscape of Iraq wrought by the longest war of the twentieth century—the Iran-Iraq War—becomes visible. Eight years of fighting have turned nature upside down, with vast wastelands being left behind. In southeastern Iraq, along the shores of the Shatt al-Arab River, the groves of date palm trees have withered. No longer bearing fruit, their leaves have turned a bright yellow. There, Iraqi forces had blocked the entry points of the river’s tributaries and streams, preventing water from flowing to the trees and vegetation. Yet, surveying this destruction from the sky, a strip of land bursting with green can be seen. Beginning from the Shatt al-Arab River and reaching to the fringes of the western desert, several kilometers wide, it appears as a lush oasis of some kind. The secret of this fertility, sustaining villages and remaining soldiers, is unclear. But it is said that one old woman is responsible for this lifeline.
