  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-05-23
  • ISBN : 0429809786
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Farewell to Farms written by Deborah Fahy Bryceson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume asks whether Africa’s future is necessarily rooted in peasant agriculture. The title of this book, Farewell to Farms, is deliberately intended to challenge the widely held view that Africa is the world’s reserve for peasant farming. African rural populations are themselves moving away from a reliance on agriculture. ‘De-agrarianisation’ takes the form of urban migration as well as the expansion of non-agricultural activities in rural areas providing new income sources, occupations and social identities for rural dwellers. Using recent continent-wide case study evidence, the authors assess the impact of de-agrarianisation on household welfare, business performance and national development. Their findings, which reveal new economic trajectories and social patterns emerging from a period of accelerated change, call into question assumptions about Africa’s future place in the world division of labour.

Book Pro Bash Programming Second Edition

Download or read book Pro Bash Programming Second Edition written by Chris Johnson and published by Apress. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pro Bash Programming teaches you how to effectively utilize the Bash shell in your programming. The Bash shell is a complete programming language, not merely a glue to combine external Linux commands. By taking full advantage of Shell internals, Shell programs can perform as snappily as utilities written in C or other compiled languages. And you will see how, without assuming Unix lore, you can write professional Bash 4.3 programs through standard programming techniques. This second edition has updated for Bash 4.3, and many scripts have been rewritten to make them more idiomatically Bash, taking better advantage of features specific to Bash. It is easy to read, understand, and will teach you how to get to grips with Bash programming without drowning you in pages and pages of syntax. Using this book you will be able to use the shell efficiently, make scripts run faster using expansion and external commands, and understand how to overcome many common mistakes that cause scripts to fail. This book is perfect for all beginning Linux and Unix system administrators who want to be in full control of their systems, and really get to grips with Bash programming.

Book Indigenous Agricultural Revolution

Download or read book Indigenous Agricultural Revolution written by Paul Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2023-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, this book argues forcefully and practically for new relationship between science and the small farmer. It advocates scientific research seeking out changes which are already taking place within the smallholder farming sector and building on local initiatives. Drawing on his experience of West Africa, the author demonstrates that many of the most successful innovations in food-crop production during the 20th century have indigenous roots and that there should therefore be less emphasis on 'teaching' farmers how to farm and more emphasis on how to foster and support local adaptation and inventiveness. This book will be of interest to students of agriculture, environmental studies and rural development as well as those working with relief and development agencies.

  • Author : Gregory H. Maddox
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press

Download or read book Custodians of the Land written by Gregory H. Maddox and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming and pastoral societies inhabit ever-changing environments. This relationship between environment and rural culture, politics and economy in Tanzania is the subject of this volume which will be valuable in reopening debates on Tanzanian history. In his conclusion, Isaria N. Kimambo, a founding father of Tanzanian history, reflects on the efforts of successive historians to strike a balance between external causes of change and local initiative in their interpretations of Tanzanian history. He shows that nationalist and Marxist historians of Tanzanian history, understandably preoccupied through the first quarter-century of the country’s post-colonial history with the impact of imperialism and capitalism on East Africa, tended to overlook the initiatives taken by rural societies to transform themselves. Yet there is good reason for historians to think about the causes of change and innovation in the rural communities of Tanzania, because farming and pastoral people have constantly changed as they adjusted to shifting environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: This work, which draws on substantial interviews, is a study of economic history from below. It focuses on the cultural and social history of Indians in Durban, exploring such topics as: why did the Indian peasantry rise and decline like the African peasantry, but with a different chronology?; what was the economic logic of the Indian family and to what extent do new interests in the politics and economics of gender help us to understand that logic?; why did Indian workers become intensely militant and why did this military subside?; and, above all, what can this history tell us about the changing nature of South African capitalism in the 20th century? This concern underlies the whole book.
