Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel and Politics in Armenia Placed between the Roman power on the West and the Parthian and Persian monarchs on the East, they had a troublous time, and after they had accepted Christianity were usually the allies and sometimes the bulwarks of the East Roman Empire in its long strife with the Sassanid kings Of Persia. In the eighth, ninth, and tenth centuries they gave to the Eastern Empire some of its best generals and ablest sovereigns. When their kingdom had been destroyed by the Turks, a large part of the nation was scattered over Asia Minor and Northern Syria, and in some Of the wild valleys of the Taurus Moun tains they maintained, like the Montenegrins in Europe, an independence often threatened but never destroyed. Scattered as they were, they have clung to their national traditions and their faith. The fullest proof of their constancy and courage was given when, in the massacres of 1895 and 1896, thousands died as martyrs rather than save their lives by accepting Islam. Book Armenia Travels and Studies Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Armenia Travels and Studies Vol 1 of 2 written by H. F. B. Lynch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia, Travels and Studies, Vol. 1 of 2: The Russian Provinces This book contains the account of two separate journeys in Armenia, the first extending from August 1893 to March 1894, and the second from May to September 1898. Before embarking upon them, I was already familiar with the contiguous countries, having spent a considerable por tion of the years 1889 and 1890 in Mesopotamia and Persia. The routes shown in my map from Aleppo to Diarbekr and down the Tigris, and from Batum across Georgia and the Caspian to Resht, were taken during the course of these earlier wanderings, and they contribute no part of the ensuing narrative. What attracted me to Armenia? I had no interests public or private in a country which has long been regarded even by Asiatic travellers as a land of passage along pre scribed routes. One inducement was curiosity: what lay beyond those mountains, drawn in a wide half-circle along the margin of the Mesopotamian plains? The sources of the great rivers which carried me southwards, a lake with the dimensions of an inland sea, the mountain of the Ark, the fabled seat of Paradise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia and Its People Having recently arrived in America I have written this little book with not a little care, in a language that is foreign to me, and I need not state the difficulty I have had in adequately expressing myself in English. I have set forth in the following pages a brief sketch of the Armenian country and the mode of life therein, from social and religious points of view, as the result of my own experience during a life-long residence in Turkey and have introduced under the guise of fiction a true story about a brave Armenian young lady on which I have laid considerable stress.
