Download or read book Histoire des ouvriers en France au XXe si cle written by Xavier Vigna and published by Tempus Perrin. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Struggle and Mutual Aid

Download or read book Struggle and Mutual Aid written by Nicolas Delalande and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic historian revisits the workers’ internationals, whose scope and significance are commonly overlooked. In current debates about globalization, open and borderless elites are often set in opposition to the immobile and protectionist working classes. This view obscures a major historical fact: for around a century—from the 1860s to the 1970s—worker movements were at the cutting edge of internationalism. The creation in London of the International Workingmen’s Association in 1864 was a turning point. What would later be called the “First International” aspired to bring together European and American workers across languages, nationalities, and trades. It was a major undertaking in a context marked by opening borders, moving capital, and exploding inequalities. In this urgent, engaging work, historian Nicolas Delalande explores how international worker solidarity developed, what it accomplished in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and why it collapsed over the past fifty years, to the point of disappearing from our memories.

Download or read book Ouvriers contre le travail written by Michael Seidman and published by Editions Senonevero. This book was released on 2010 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Shopkeepers and Master Artisans in Ninteenth Century Europe

Download or read book Shopkeepers and Master Artisans in Ninteenth Century Europe written by Geoffrey Crossick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984. Shopkeepers and master artisans had a striking presence in the history of nineteenth-century Europe, not only in the development of industrial and urban economies, but also the fabric of social life and the politics of protest. The experience of 1848, the differing pace of various forms of nationalism and liberalism and, at the end of the century, the shift towards right-wing nationalist or Catholic political movements reflected a developing ‘crisis’ in the petite bourgeoisie. The essays examine the nature of this crisis and ask critical questions about the social relations of the petite bourgeoisie with the developing working classes. This book as a whole provides a fresh and integrated approach to the world of these shopkeepers and master artisans and illuminates much else besides in the social history of nineteenth-century Europe.

Download or read book Changing Societies written by Vincent Mariet and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting movement at the center of our political and practical perspectives is to consider several issues related to the movement itself, including questions about the concept of “pure” culture. The migrant—s/he who moves—is seen as an “intruder” and a threat to cultural norms, but other frightening social mutations such as environmental problems or the growing place of artificial intelligence in societies are just some examples of evolving cultural and social identity, observable in each temporality, each geographical area and even in each discipline, and make it possible to study the different aspects of the dynamic movement that is at the origin of social changes. This volume explores the ways in which populations confronted with such social changes are affected, and which consequently can foster new ways of individual or collective decision-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983—as France struggled with race-based crimes, police brutality, and public unrest—youths from Vénissieux (working-class suburbs of Lyon) led the March for Equality and Against Racism, the first national demonstration of its type in France. As Abdellali Hajjat reveals, the historic March for Equality and Against Racism symbolized for many the experience of the children of postcolonial immigrants. Inspired by the May '68 protests, these young immigrants stood against racist crimes, for equality before the law and the police, and for basic rights such as the right to work and housing. Hajjat also considers the divisions that arose from the march and offers fresh insight into the paradoxes and intricacies of movements pushing toward sweeping social change. Translated into English for the first time, The Wretched of France contemplates the protest's lasting significance in France as well as its impact within the context of larger and comparable movements for civil rights, particularly in the US.
