D'abord, un problème concernant le contenu des concepts qu'elles désignent. L'auteur montre de quelle manière Marx construit la définition du travail productif et comment cette définition est liée à deux distinctions différentes et complémentaires entre travail productif et travail improductif. Il remarque en particulier que la détermination générale du travail productif, commune à tous les modes de production, n'est pas abandonnée dans la définition achevée du travail productif dans le mode de production capitaliste et que l'opposition entre travail productif et improductif est intérieure à la définition du travail productif. Ensuite, un problème concernant l'usage ou la destination de ces concepts. Ce livre insiste sur la liaison chez Marx entre le travail productif et l'analyse de la productivité des forces productives : la définition du travail productif et les oppositions qu'elle implique constituent un des préalables majeurs aux développements que Marx consacre dans le Livre III du Capital à l'analyse de la baisse tendancielle du taux de profit. Enfin un problème concernant la nature ou le statut des concepts utilisés. L'exposé suppose ici que le travail productif est un concept « économique » et qu'il appelle comme tel une réflexion relativement indépendante de toute analyse politique. Comment situer alors l'analyse politique ? La conclusion de cet ouvrage précise un certain nombre des termes du problème par référence aux relations de Marx avec l'économie politique classique qui est le lieu de naissance du débat sur le travail productif.
