Book excerpt: MATEMAX is a bilingual schoolbook of mathematical problems written with the premise that one of the fundamental ways of learning mathematics, in addition to being one of the goals of the subject, is to solve problems. The book is designed for children and young teens and aims to teach mathematics in an entertaining way. Problems are based on familiar everyday situations, and helpful hints guide students to develop strategies before diving into calculations, leading to practice in abstract thinking, an essential feature of mathematics. Presented in both English and Spanish it also provides equal access to students, parents and teachers with facility in either or both languages. An online supplement is available upon request at [email protected]. This companion book provides complete solutions, alternative methods and additional suggestions to complement the short answers contained in the book. In addition, while problems are arranged in the book as they appear naturally in life, the companion text connects the mathematical tools with standard curricula. Here is a sampling of those pages. Download or read book A Theory of History written by Agnes Heller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This radical analysis of the role and importance of historiography interprets the philosophy and theory of history on the basis of historicity as a human condition. The book examins the norms and methods of historiography from a philosophical point of view, but rejects generalisations tht the philosophy of history can provide all the answers to contemporary problems. Instead it outlines a feasible theory of history which is still radical enough to apply to all social structures.

Download or read book Latin Grammar and Rhetoric written by Carol Lanham and published by Leicester University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No legacy from antiquity to the Latin Middle Ages was more pervasive, or more enduring, than that of grammar and rhetoric. Cicero's son would have felt at home in a Tudor schoolroom, and the classical curriculum is readily recognizable in that of the Tudor schoolroom. And yet, grammatical and rhetorical theory and practice did change during those 1500 years, in ways that continue to demand, and richly reward, investigation. The twelve essays in this book contribute to the rapidly growing body of knowledge about the teaching and uses of grammar and rhetoric in the Latin West from late antiquity to the dawn of a new era in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Since grammar and rhetoric dominated (indeed, almost monopolized) schooling from Cicero's Rome until the twelfth-century revival of Roman law and the rise of universities, clearly a collection of essay examining aspects of these two subjects will, by definition, enrich the larger history of education as well. Download or read book Claudian De Raptu Proserpinae written by Claudius Claudianus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive study of Claudian's unfinished mythological epic, with a text, apparatus criticus, and commentary. The long introduction begins with a catalogue of manuscripts; and this leads to an investigation into the manuscript tradition and the history of the poem's transmission. Dr Hall then surveys the most important printed editions of the poem. He examines various theories of dating and discusses the sources of the story. He concludes the introduction with a brief critical assessment of the form and style of the poem. Dr Hall establishes his text after an examination of all the extant manuscripts. The apparatus, though very full, is selective in that it records readings of younger manuscripts only when they offer something new. It also ignores trifling corruptions. The commentary is similarly selective. In general, it discusses everything relevant to the establishing of the text and ignores points of purely mythological and literary interest.
