ROUMANIAN SUPERSTITION: DAYS AND HOURS. Grimm has said that "superstition in all its multifariousness constitutes a species of religion applicable to all the common household necessities of daily life;" and if we view it as such, particular forms of superstition may very well serve as guide to the character and habits of the particular nation in which they are prevalent. In Transylvania, however, the task of classifying all the superstitions that come under our notice is a peculiarly hard one, for perhaps nowhere else does this curious crooked plant of delusion flourish so persistently and in such bewildering variety as in the land beyond the forest; and it would almost seem as though the whole species of demons, pixies, witches, and hobgoblins, driven from the rest of Europe by the wand of science, had taken refuge within this mountain rampart, aware that here they would find secure lurking-places whence to defy their persecutors yet a while. i " Der Aberglaube in seiner bunten Mannigfaltigkeit bildet gewissennassen eine Religion fiir den ganzen neideren Hausbedarf." There are many reasons why such fabulous beings should retain an abnormally firm hold on the soil of these parts, and looking at the matter closely, we find no less than three distinct sources of superstition: --First, there is what may be called the indigenous superstition of the country, the scenery of which is particularly adapted to serve as background to all sorts of supernatural beings. There are innumerable caverns whose depths seem made to harbour whole legions of evil spirits; forest glades, fit only for fairy folk on moonlight nights; solitary lakes, which instinctively call up visions of water-sprites; golden treasures lying hidden in mountain...

Book FROM THE LAND BEYOND THE FOREST

Download or read book FROM THE LAND BEYOND THE FOREST written by John Irtel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He has recounted to friends and acquaintances some episodes of his many adventures through life, and his listeners have always found them interesting, fascinating, entertaining, and worth telling. This dawned the momentous chronicling of this part memoir, part historical account of his life, his country, and his journey. In this newly published book, From the Land Beyond the Forest, author John Irtel shares from whence he came, to his escape and survival, to his arrival and new life on a new land, and more. Divided into two sections, the first part of this book briefly deals with the history of the land and the Saxon people of Transylvania, including some traditions and customs, which were part of the author when he was young. The history of Transylvania is rich and long and would require much research to do it justice. The highlights pertaining to his own life include the aftermath of the Second World War, his escape from Romania in 1947, and his life as a refugee in Austria and Italy. The second part of this book deals with the period from his departure from Europe to Australia as a nineteen-year-old immigrant, which posed as the biggest and most important challenge in his life. However, the curious fascination he developed for his new country and its people enabled him to adjust and assimilate into the community more easily than many others have done. “I have seen more than seventy years of life passing by, from childhood to old age. I have seen many changes, enjoyed happiness and endured pain. I can truly say that life has been an interesting challenge,” shares Irtel. Author shares his country’s history, his past, his new home, and his life in this memoir.

Book Draculas Vampires and Other Undead Forms

Download or read book Draculas Vampires and Other Undead Forms written by John Edgar Browning and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Dracula in 1897, Bram Stoker's original creation has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, and filmmakers. From Universal's early black-and-white films and Hammer's Technicolor representations that followed, iterations of Dracula have been cemented in mainstream cinema. This anthology investigates and explores the far larger body of work coming from sources beyond mainstream cinema reinventing Dracula. Draculas, Vampires and Other Undead Forms assembles provocative essays that examine Dracula films and their movement across borders of nationality, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, and genre since the 1920s. The essays analyze the complexity Dracula embodies outside the conventional landscape of films with which the vampire is typically associated. Focusing on Dracula and Dracula-type characters in film, anime, and literature from predominantly non-Anglo markets, this anthology offers unique perspectives that seek to ground depictions and experiences of Dracula within a larger political, historical, and cultural framework.

Book excerpt: This volume analyses the role of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its sequels in the evolution of the Gothic. As well as the transformation of the Gothic location—from castles, cemeteries and churches to the modern urban gothic—this volume explores the evolution of the undead considering a range of media from the 19th century protagonist to sympathetic contemporary vampires of teen Gothic. Based on an interdisciplinary approach (literature, tourism, and film), the book argues that the development of the Dracula myth is the result of complex international influences and cultural interactions. Offering a multifarious perspective, this volume is a reference work that will be useful to both academic and general readers.
