This book was released on 2005 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse momentum (PT) distributions for pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons have been measured near mid-rapidity for Au+Au collisions at sNN = 62.4 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) in Brookhaven National Laboratory. Particle identification is performed using the PHOBOS Time-of-Flight plastic scintillator walls and specific energy loss in the multi-layer silicon Spectrometer, which is also used for track reconstruction and momentum-determination. The spectra are corrected for all detector-dependent effects, including feed-down from weak decays. At PT 3 GeV/c, protons are measured to be the dominant species of charged hadrons and scale much faster with respect to collision centrality than mesons. This behaviour at 62.4 GeV is found to be remarkably similar to that observed in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV, an interesting observation which should serve as an important constraint on the various mechanisms which have been proposed to describe particle production over this PT range. Baryon stopping, the transport of baryon number from intial beam rapidity, is explored through the net proton (p - p) yields at mid-rapidity. These results fill a large gap between the SPS and higher RHIC energies and as such form an important set of data for comparing to models of baryon transport mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of [pi]{sup ±}, K{sup ±}, and p({bar p}) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (R{sub dAu}) between (p+ {bar p}) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2

Book Determination of Elliptic Flow and Other Properties of Charged Kaons in Relativistic Au Au Collisions Using Decay topology Identification

Download or read book Determination of Elliptic Flow and Other Properties of Charged Kaons in Relativistic Au Au Collisions Using Decay topology Identification written by John Amonett and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning, there was quark gluon plasma (QGP). QGP persisted for only on the order of microseconds after the Big Bang. This exotic state of matter consists of deconfined quarks and gluons under extreme conditions. It is believed that the QGP state can be recreated in the laboratory through heavy-ion collisions at ultra-high energies. The Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory appears to produce sufficiently high energy to exceed the threshold for creating the QGP phase. There are four experiments at RHIC, and one of the largest is the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). The STAR detector utilizes a Time Projection Chamber with full azimuthal acceptance to track as many as thousands of produced particles from a single nucleus-nucleus collision. The QGP state of matter has many proposed signatures. This project explores the anisotropic elliptic flow properties of gold (Au) on gold collisions. Elliptic flow corresponds to the second harmonic coefficient (v2) of a Fourier decomposition of the transverse momentum distribution of emitted particles. Elliptic flow is the dominant term in the quantitative description of the collective motion among the particles produced in this type of heavy-ion collision. The focus of this dissertation is on a single type of particle, the charged kaon (K"). Charged kaons are the least massive particles that contain strange quarks. Using conventional techniques based on rate of energy loss, identification of charged kaons becomes difficult above a momentum of ~ 600 MeV/c. This project uses a topological method to identify decaying charged kaons up to transverse momenta ~ 4 GeV/c. Our topological method has the drawback of relatively low efficiency, which decreases with increasing momentum. The data set studied in this dissertation corresponds to gold on gold interactions at the maximum energy of the RHIC machine, and collisions across the full range of impact parameters are analyzed. Possible charged kaons are tagged from a list of candidates. The viable charged kaons are chosen using a series of stringent identification criteria. The reaction plane is determined for each event, and elliptic flow is calculated, correcting for the systematic effects caused by the finite reaction plane resolution. The dependence of elliptic flow on transverse momentum is highly significant when different particle types can be compared. The data for charged kaons falls into a pattern where there is a universal curve for the amount of flow per constituent quark as a function of the quark's transverse momentum. This universal curve can account for the flow observed for all known particle types. It suggests that the collective motion must have been imparted during the early phase of the collision when a QGP state existed. A different pattern would be expected if the collective motion had been imparted after the quarks had coalesced into hadrons, or if the QGP state had not been formed at all. The dissertation discusses the significance of the new evidence, and the caveats and possible alternative explanations.

Download or read book Azimuthal Anisotropy of Charged Particles with Transverse Momentum Up to 100 GeV in PbPb Collisions at sqrt s NN written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourier coefficients v[2] and v[3] characterizing the anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution of charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are measured with data collected by the CMS experiment. The measurements cover a broad transverse momentum range, pt= 1-100 GeV. The analysis focuses on pt> 10 GeV range, where anisotropic azimuthal distributions should reflect the path-length dependence of parton energy loss in the created medium. Results are presented in several bins of PbPb collision centrality, spanning the 60x% most central events. The v[2] coefficient is measured with the scalar product and the multiparticle cumulant methods, which have different sensitivities to the initial-state fluctuations. The values of both methods remain positive up to pt ~ 70 GeV, in all examined centrality classes. The v[3] coefficient, only measured with the scalar product method, tends to zero for pt>~ 20 GeV. Comparisons between theoretical calculations and data provide new constraints on the path-length dependence of parton energy loss in heavy ion collisions and highlight the importance of the initial-state fluctuations.

Book Transverse Momentum Structures of Charged Particle Final States from Proton proton Collisions with a Charged Trigger Particle of Large Transverse Momentum

Download or read book Transverse Momentum Structures of Charged Particle Final States from Proton proton Collisions with a Charged Trigger Particle of Large Transverse Momentum written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sample of proton-proton collisions at .sqrt. s = 63 GeV with a (trigger) charged particle of transverse momentum in the range 4 to 12 GeV/c and vertical bar rapidity vertical bar 1 is studied. The events were obtained with the Axial Field Spectrometer at the CERN ISR (experiment R807). Preliminary results are reported from an investigation of the distribution of the transverse momentum vectors of the observed charged particles in the central rapidity region associated with the trigger particle. It is found that the pattern of transverse momentum vectors of the observed charged particles in the central rapidity region associated with the trigger particle. It is found that the pattern of transverse momentum vectors of the charged particles observed in a given event is strongly dependent on the amount of transverse energy which is carried by the associated charged particles observed in the event. When the transverse energy is large ( 10 GeV/c within vertical bar rapidity vertical bar

This book was released on 1989 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One means of studying the properties of the compressed and highly excited reaction zone is the investigation of {sub pT} spectra of produced pions and their dependence on the centrality of the reaction. To distinguish different contributing processes and to provide a reliable basis for comparisons with p + p scattering, a large {sub pT} coverage is required. In particular, data at high {sub pT} values, where hard processes become important and may be calculated by perturbative QCD are of interest. The present study of [pi]° spectra concentrates on measurements of {sub pT} spectra up to 2.8 GeV/c and on selections of the data according to the centrality of the reaction. 8 refs., 4 figs.

Book Transverse Momentum Dependent Two pion Bose Einstein Correlations in Au Au Collisions at 11 6 A center dot GeV c

Download or read book Transverse Momentum Dependent Two pion Bose Einstein Correlations in Au Au Collisions at 11 6 A center dot GeV c written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bose-Einstein correlations of[pi][sup+][pi][sup+] and[pi][sup[minus]][pi][sup[minus]] pairs collected by the BNL-E866 Forward Spectrometer in 11.6 A[center-dot]GeV/c Au+ Au collisions have been measured. The data were analyzed using three-dimensional correlation functions parameterized by the Yano-Koonin-Potgoretskii and Bertsch-Pratt formalism to study transverse momentum dependent source parameters. Rapid decreases of longitudinal source radii and slower decreases in the transverse parameters with increasing transverse momentum were observed, which suggests a strong longitudinal and some transverse expansion. A freeze-out time[tau][sub 0] was derived as 4.5--5 fm/c, under the assumption of the freeze-out temperature T= 130 MeV, and the duration of emission was found to be[delta][tau][approx] 2--4 fm/c.
