Download or read book Commentary on Factors Affecting Transverse Vibration Using an Idealized Theoretical Equation written by Joseph Francis Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An idealized theoretical equation to calculate flexural stiffness using transverse vibration of a simply end-supported beam is being considered by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) Wood Committee D07 to determine lumber modulus of elasticity. This commentary provides the user a quantitative view of six factors that affect the accuracy of using the idealized theoretical equation, idealized assumptions, and idealized boundary conditions. The six factors that affect the calculation of the flexural modulus of elasticity are ranked in order of importance, and recommendations are given. Not covered are the precision and accuracy of the physical measurements.

Book Experimental Techniques for Analysis of Transverse Impact on Beams

Download or read book Experimental Techniques for Analysis of Transverse Impact on Beams written by Thomas Herbert Berns and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures are developed to facilitate laboratory investigation of the effects of short-duration transverse impact loading on simply supported beams. The particular beam investigated was aluminum, with constant rectangular cross-section. Six loading conditions were examined, consisting of a central impact from three heights for each of two spherical masses. Theoretical analysis was made of the frequency and deflection characteristics for ten equally spaced locations on the beam, under the assumption of Euler's beam theory. Experimental data were compared with theoretical values to give an indication of the effectiveness of the theoretical system in representing the physical system. It was concluded that the theory gives a good representation of the physical system, especially with respect to the frequency characteristics. (Author).

Book Vibrations and Stability of Complex Beam Systems

Download or read book Vibrations and Stability of Complex Beam Systems written by Vladimir Stojanović and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on solved problems concerning vibrations and stability of complex beam systems. The complexity of a system is considered from two points of view: the complexity originating from the nature of the structure, in the case of two or more elastically connected beams; and the complexity derived from the dynamic behavior of the system, in the case of a damaged single beam, resulting from the harm done to its simple structure. Furthermore, the book describes the analytical derivation of equations of two or more elastically connected beams, using four different theories (Euler, Rayleigh, Timoshenko and Reddy-Bickford). It also reports on a new, improved p-version of the finite element method for geometrically nonlinear vibrations. The new method provides more accurate approximations of solutions, while also allowing us to analyze geometrically nonlinear vibrations. The book describes the appearance of longitudinal vibrations of damaged clamped-clamped beams as a result of discontinuity (damage). It describes the cases of stability in detail, employing all four theories, and provides the readers with practical examples of stochastic stability. Overall, the book succeeds in collecting in one place theoretical analyses, mathematical modeling and validation approaches based on various methods, thus providing the readers with a comprehensive toolkit for performing vibration analysis on complex beam systems.

Book Computational Dynamics in Multibody Systems

Download or read book Computational Dynamics in Multibody Systems written by Manuel F.O. Seabra Pereira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the edited version of selected papers presented at the Nato Advanced Study Institute on "Computer Aided Analysis of Rigid and Flexible Mechanical Systems", held in Portugal, from the 27 June to 9 July, 1994. The present volume can be viewed as a natural extension of the material addressed in the Institute which was published by KLUWER in the NATO ASI Series, Vol. 268, in 1994. The requirements for accurate and efficient analysis tools for design of large and lightweight mechanical systems has driven a strong interest in the challenging problem of multibody dynamics. The development of new analysis and design formulations for multi body systems has been more recently motivated with the need to include general features such as: real-time simulation capabilities, active control of machine flexibilities and advanced numerical methods related to time integration of the dynamic systems equations. In addition to the presentation of some basic formulations and methodologies in dynamics of multibody systems, including computational aspects, major applications of developments to date are presented herein. The scope of applications is extended to vehicle dynamics, aerospace technology, robotics, mechanisms design, intermittent motion and crashworthiness analysis. Several of these applications are explored by many contributors with a constant objective to pace development and improve the dynamic performance of mechanical systems avoiding different mechanical limitations and difficult functional requirements, such as, for example, accurate positioning of manipulators.

Book Elastic Analysis of Soil Foundation Interaction

Download or read book Elastic Analysis of Soil Foundation Interaction written by A.P.S. Selvadurai and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Vol. 17: Elastic Analysis of Soil-Foundation Interaction focuses on the analysis of the interaction between structural foundations and supporting soil media. The publication first elaborates on soil-foundation interaction problems; idealized soil response models for the analysis of soil-foundation interaction; and plane-strain analysis of an infinite plate and an infinitely long beam. Discussions focus on three-dimensional effects in the infinite beam problem, elastic models of soil behavior, foundation and interface behavior, and elastic-plastic and time-dependent behavior of soil masses. The manuscript then ponders on the analysis of beams of finite length, axisymmetric three-dimensional problem of an infinite plate, and analysis of finite plates. Concerns cover axisymmetric loading of a circular plate, analysis of rectangular plates, axisymmetric three-dimensional problem of the infinite plate, modifications of the thin plate theory, finite beams on a two-parameter elastic medium, and finite beams on an elastic solid medium. The book tackles the determination of soil parameters, experimental investigations and field studies, as well as experimental investigations and field studies and measurement and interpretation of parameters encountered in the idealized soil models in relation to soil-foundation behavior. The publication is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the elastic analysis of soil-foundation interaction.

Book Nonsmooth Mechanics

Download or read book Nonsmooth Mechanics written by Bernard Brogliato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, this standard reference is a comprehensive treatment of nonsmooth mechanical systems refocused to give more prominence to issues connected with control and modelling. It covers Lagrangian and Newton–Euler systems, detailing mathematical tools such as convex analysis and complementarity theory. The ways in which nonsmooth mechanics influence and are influenced by well-posedness analysis, numerical analysis and simulation, modelling and control are explained. Contact/impact laws, stability theory and trajectory-tracking control are given detailed exposition connected by a mathematical framework formed from complementarity systems and measure-differential inclusions. Links are established with electrical circuits with set-valued nonsmooth elements as well as with other nonsmooth dynamical systems like impulsive and piecewise linear systems. Nonsmooth Mechanics (third edition) retains the topical structure familiar from its predecessors but has been substantially rewritten, edited and updated to account for the significant body of results that have emerged in the twenty-first century—including developments in: the existence and uniqueness of solutions; impact models; extension of the Lagrange–Dirichlet theorem and trajectory tracking; and well-posedness of contact complementarity problems with and without friction. Many figures (both new and redrawn to improve the clarity of the presentation) and examples are used to illustrate the theoretical developments. Material introducing the mathematics of nonsmooth mechanics has been improved to reflect the broad range of applications interest that has developed since publication of the second edition. The detail of some mathematical essentials is provided in four appendices. With its improved bibliography of over 1,300 references and wide-ranging coverage, Nonsmooth Mechanics (third edition) is sure to be an invaluable resource for researchers and postgraduates studying the control of mechanical systems, robotics, granular matter and relevant fields of applied mathematics. “The book’s two best features, in my view are its detailed survey of the literature... and its detailed presentation of many examples illustrating both the techniques and their limitations... For readers interested in the field, this book will serve as an excellent introductory survey.” Andrew Lewis in Automatica “It is written with clarity, contains the latest research results in the area of impact problems for rigid bodies and is recommended for both applied mathematicians and engineers.” Panagiotis D. Panagiotopoulos in Mathematical Reviews “The presentation is excellent in combining rigorous mathematics with a great number of examples... allowing the reader to understand the basic concepts.” Hans Troger in Mathematical Abstracts “/i>
