Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transvaal Problems: Some Notes on Current Politics When I went on a visit to South Africa recently, it was with no intention of writing a book. Experience has taught me that there are more pleasant ways of spending the homeward voyage than that of sitting day after day in a hot cabin studying reports, analysing speeches, digesting statistics, and recording, even through the medium of a shorthand writer, the reflections inspired and the conclusions arrived at. My object is to present in a consecutive shape information, much of which has already been published in a fragmentary way, and to consider, in the light of the most recent knowledge, a number of important questions, affecting in some instances the Transvaal alone, and in others the whole of South Africa. In the retrospect I was tempted to drift into reminiscences of the early days, as the reader will see, and had to check the impulse ruthlessly, passing to a short historical review from 1881 to the termination of the late war. The chapters upon the work of reconstruction and upon the industrial and labour questions do not call for preliminary remarks. Book South Africa and the Transvaal War Vol 8 of 8 Illustrations

Download or read book South Africa and the Transvaal War Vol 8 of 8 Illustrations written by Various and published by MANCHESTER: KENNETH MACLENNAN. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone who has followed the story of the War in South Africa from start to finish will assuredly have acquired a keen and lasting interest in the land which has been won by the expenditure of so much blood and treasure. Earnestly will he discuss in his mind all questions connected with the development of the New Dominions of the King, and vigilantly will he watch every action of the Government in regard to them. In order rightly to estimate the difficulties to be overcome and the issues to be hoped for, and to follow these questions with complete apprehension, it is necessary to be familiar with their aspect in every possible light. To this end, the Editor has invited the co-operation of various well-known Authorities, each of whom has kindly contributed his opinion on matters coming within his special experience. The Publishers claim, therefore, that in this Volume is collected the cream of modern thought, furnished at first-hand by those whose mastery of their subject, and whose interest in the Empire, render them competent to instruct in the intricacies of the South African problems, with which for some time to come we must stand face-to-face. That these writers do not on all points entirely agree is a matter for congratulation, as readers are thus enabled to view the political panorama from every reasonable standpoint, and weigh the pros and cons of their arguments with perspicuity and without prejudice. At the present juncture, when Mr. Chamberlain, the greatest of Colonial Secretaries, is visiting South Africa, the Publishers are convinced that this Volume is the most valuable book on the new Colonies that has yet been offered to the Public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transvaal Problems: Some Notes on Current Politics A line of coaches to Kimberley had been started, and by that means a dozen inside passengers, packed like sardines in a tin, not to mention outside passengers and piles of luggage, accomplished the journey in a week, travelling night and day. When I arrived, the service had broken down, and so I went by mule waggon. It happened that the late General (then Colonel) Glyn, with his regiment, the 24th, in which General Carrington was a subaltern, was ordered to the Diamond Fields at that time to quell the rebellion, the most sanguinary feature in connection with which consisted in the raising of the black flag. It will be remembered that Alfred Aylward, the Fenian, was prominent in that affair. We arrived one night and camped outside De Beers, expecting on the morrow to see an attack upon the town, instead of which a luncheon was given on the market square, and all was well. Download or read book British Imperialism written by P.J. Cain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A milestone in the understanding of British history and imperialism, and truly global in its reach, this magisterial account received numerous accolades from reviewers in its first edition. The first to coin the phrase "gentlemanly capitalism", Cain and Hopkins make the strong and provocative argument that it is impossible to understand the nature and evolution of British imperialism without taking account of the peculiarities of her economic development. In particular, the growth of the financial sector - and above all, the City of London - played a crucial role in shaping the course of British history and Britain's relations overseas. Now with a substantive new introduction and a conclusion, the scope of the original account has been widened to include an innovative discussion of globalization.
